Cindy nodded, pressing herself against the wall of the stair well and taking her time getting down the stairs, holding her breath and silently hoping there was nothing that was going to notice then. She didn't want to falls down the stairs and break an ankle if she panicked while trying to get away.
"Is it clear?"

"Looks clear so far", was all that Sarah could say. They made it down to the landing and Sarah looked down the next flight and could see the door that led from the staircase to the 2nd floor. What she saw after that made her heart sink. A section of the stairs that led from the 2nd floor down to the landing between the 2nd and 1st floor had been removed. They would either have to jump the gap, which was 10 feet long and 8 feet down, or they were going to go all the way through the 2nd floor to see if other set of stairs were accessible. She was about to talk to Cindy, when she saw movement below. Shining her flashlight down to the first floor, what she saw at first didn't make sense... the floor was moving. Then her mind resolved what she was looking at... the first floor stairwell on that side was filled with undead looking up at her and Cindy, moaning.
"Don't look down", was what she said to Cindy. With that area blocked off, Sarah looked through the door that led to the 2nd floor. Several doors were open and many were closed. What was different was that the all had at least 5 walkers roaming in the hallway or just standing there, staring at the walls. "We have to go through them.

Cindy maintained eye contact with Sarah, knowing whatever she had seen must have been bad. Once they reached the hallway for the second floor she gasped, eyes wide as she saw them. There was no way they could get through them without being noticed, and they didn't know if they were going to run into any more of them roaming the floor. Which meant their only option was to take them out.
"Okay. How are we going to do this?"
She already had her machete raised, wondering if chopping directly into the skull would be faster than trying to take their head off. It occurred to her she didn't know how sharp the blade was, or if she was able to swing it hard enough to cut through the spinal cord and either take the head off, or cripple them.

Sarah looked down the hall again, only 3 of them had their backs turned to Sarah and Cindy and one was closest to the door. They were all spread out.
"Okay, so when we open the door, the noise is bound to get their attention. Still, they can't move very well and we don't want them bunched up together... they'll overwhelm us. I say we attack the ones in the hallway first. Don't run into the room to hide, that will get you killed."
Sarah motioned down the hallway. About a third of the way down was the first set of open door. "I don't want to get past those doors. If there are undead in there, I don't want them getting behind us or lunging out from the side. We will draw the ones in the hallway to us, destroy them one at a time, and then look in the rooms. If there is one in there and it isn't close to the door, then we will just shut the door. Are you okay?"

Cindy nodded, biting her lower lip and swallowing her fear. She didn't want to go in there, but if they didn't they'd be trapped. She didn't want to die in the hotel. She didn't want to starve to death in a room, or end up walking around as one of the dead people.
"Okay. Don't go past the door, draw them to us. You lead, I'll follow. I won't screw this up, I promise."

Sarah smiled. "You'll do great. Let's go." As quietly as she could, Sarah pressed down on the door level, unlatching the door. There was an audible click as the metal lock slid back to let the door open. Sarah watched as the 5 zombies stiffened at the sound. Slowly, they began to turn around.
No time like the present thought Sarah and she stalked right up to the first one and slammed him in the back of the head with the crowbar. The first zombie went down, face first and Sarah slammed it in the head again, smashing the skull. The first zombie stopped moving. Sarah looked up. The other 4 zombies began to move towards them, but they were fairly spread out. Gauging them, if they each took one, then neither one should be overwhelmed.
With Cindy though, that could be a big if. Time for her to face her fears. Since the undead were already aware of them, there was no point in whispering. "I'll take the next one and you got the third one. Are you ready?"

Cindy looked at the now very dead zombie on the ground, and back up at the four that were making their way towards them. They were slow, and spaced out. This could work. When Sarah spoke to her, she seemed to snap out of it, giving her a nod and readying her machete. Aim for the skull, the blade would sink in easier there than trying to decapitate one. Won't get stuck in the spinal column. Just bring it down on top part of the skull.
She watched as Sarah advanced on the next one, and she picked her target, the one ten feet behind it. Looked like a fisherman, completed with vest and Wellingtons. She tried not to think about who he had been, or what had brought him here. She only needed to concentrate on ending its existence.

Cindy didn't lock up... that was a great relief to Sarah. She wasn't expecting Cindy to go all She-Ra on them, but she was glad that she didn't quiver in the corner, waiting to be eaten. Cindy had chosen the fisherman, so that left Sarah to face off with... Grandma Snappy? Well, she could have been a grandmother. Sarah didn't know as the zombie's face was mostly eaten off. But she/it was wearing a light blue moo-moo with was stained with blood and crap, so it was hard to tell. Also, and this was the pretty disturbing thing, one of her boobs was dragging on the ground. Sarah didn't want to think about how that was happening. She just swung her crowbar at the head of Granny, bashing it in. There was a sickening sounds as the front of her head caved in and she fell back on the ground.
Out of the corner of her eye, she looked to see where Cindy was with her fisherman. Sarah fought the urge to rush forward. She didn't want to get separated from Cindy and didn't want to run past any open doors. She waited for the other two to get to them.

Cindy waited until the zombie had gotten within striking range, following Sarah's example and not rushing to attach. Once it was close enough to grab her she swung the machete down, her arm being jarred as the machete sunk a few inches into the fisherman's skull. The zombie's arms dropped, and it's nerves firing off made it twitch a few seconds before it finally collapses, nearly pulling her on top of it. She had to give a good pull, but she was able to get the blade free in time for the next target to make its way to them.

"One for the Engineering Chick", rooted Sarah. The last two were nearly to them, but they were staggered about 3 feet apart. Sarah grabbed Cindy's arm, pulling her back. "Watch this", she said pointing at the zombies. They continued to approach the girls, but they were unaware of the most basic of surroundings... like the two bodies that were laying at their feet. Both zombies fell over, face first onto the carpet, flailing their arms. Sarah stepped up and smashed the one on the right in the back of the head. It shuddered for a second and then went still. Then she waited until Cindy finished with hers.
It wasn't that she didn't want to help, but Cindy was just learning how to manage herself with the machete and if Sarah stepped in now, she could get in the way, block her attack, trip over something. No, it was safer for Cindy to handle it on her own, but Sarah was ready in case she faltered.
When all was said and done, the hall was cleared of the undead. "Good going, Slayer", she said, patting Cindy on the back. "Now, I say we clear the rooms the open doors and see if there is anything else. Then we rest and talk about the next floor. You ready?"

Cindy pulled the machete blade out of the back of the zombies skull, covering her mouth and breathing through her nose as she tried not vomit. She couldn't tell how long they had been dead, but the smell was awful enough to keep her from inspecting them any further. She stopped and listened, wondering if anything else was coming out to get them. She gave Sarah a shaky thumbs up, letting her know she was alright to continue.

Sarah started to slowly make her way down the hallway. As she passed doors, she would tap on the door with her crowbar. If there was a moan or the door started to rattle, she would mark it with an "X" with her bar of soap. If, for some reason, they had to retreat up the stairs, it would give her a visual clue as to which door not to open. At the first open door, she peaked inside the room.
It wasn't vacant!
There was a zombie staring at the light coming through the boards over the window. She was dressed in a short nightgown and had bites all over her legs and arms. Instead of attacking her, Sarah just leaned in and grabbed the door handle. She quickly shut the door, marking an X over it.
The next room was empty as was the one after that.
They continued down the hallway, checking rooms, marking door doors that obviously held the undead behind it. If the door was open and nothing was in there, they left it open. However, there was a handful of doors that were closed and had no sound. Sarah marked those with question marks.
At the end of the hallway, Sarah turned around, looking back at the 6 rooms that had open doors.
"Okay, let's take a few minutes to check those rooms. There might be useful things left in those rooms before we go downstairs."

"Alright. He said there would be food, and weapons. Something better than what we have. I hope it's not just soap. That would be a pretty lousy weapon."
Cindy gave Sarah a weak smile and checked the first room, quietly ducking her head in to see if there were any surprises.
Nothing.
She sighed, half expecting there to be something ready to try and kill her. Instead it was just a quiet room, and the chance of something that could help them survive for the next 23 hours. Her stomach grumbled at the thought of a good meal, and she had to fight the thought of food.

Sarah and Cindy checked out the first room and besides bedding, there wasn't much more to be found. The same was true of the 2nd room. Finally, the were entering the last room. Sarah heard Cindy's stomach growl and her own added to it, making Sarah realized that it has been over 15 hours since they had eaten anything. By her account, it was probably pushing towards noon.
"Let's try this room and then take a break", Sarah said, entering the last of the rooms that were open. She moved to the closest and opened the doors. There, against the wall, was a shotgun. It was equipped with a pistol grip and the barrel was sawed down to just beyond the wooden stock, turning the long scatter gun into almost a pistol. Sarah picked it up and racked the slide, ejecting each shell in turn. Five shells ejected and she checked each one before she reloaded the weapon.
"Not much, but in a pinch it will do." Sarah laid it out on the bed. While it would put a decent hole in whatever was in front of her, with only five shells, it would do more damage than good in a group. She began to check other places, including the desk and under the bed.
"Cindy, what have you found?"

"Some canteens. Sounds like there is water in them. And an ice pick. I hope there is more in the other rooms. This won't get us far."
Cindy held up the two liter-sized canteens, and the rusted ice pick. She guessed it would work well if the machete got stuck or she didn't have a chance to swing the machete in time. Still, food would have been a better find. They had said there would be supplies on this floor, they didn't say where exactly it would be. Chances are it was probably spread around the floor they were on.
"We're going to have to keep looking right? I mean, it's not like we don't have time."
