It was reassuring when Ben seen Madison take out several garbage bags from his backpack when going toward the front door of the house, she did this sort of thing plenty of times, and already knew what to look for and where to find it. As for himself, Ben walked across the large land mass, pushing past high grown plant life. The odds of him finding a truck in the barn was pretty good, but whether or not it was drivable was another question. He knew how to fix things, and depending on what he needed to fix, could do so pretty quickly if they absolutely needed to.
But when he was halfway between the bar and the house, Ben tripped over something, and fell down into a hole in the ground covered up by most of the greenery. The fall wasnt harmful, but it was over six feet deep. Rays of sunlight came through the top, which alternated depending on the wind guiding it from side to side. The alarm came when he noticed a number of bodies stacked around the hole, but each however rotted beyond the point of even getting back up as a walker. The smell wasnt even putrid, the must have been over a decade old, the only thing preserving them in the slightest was the natural salts in the ground under the crop field.
Moving across the diameter of the hole, Ben seen noticed that this wasnt just a hole, but a man made trench that seemed to run parallel to the field. Its purpose didnt really dawn on him at first, but the longer he walked through it, the more corpses he seen, and it was obvious that it was a trap for the infected. The slope indicated that it moved down eventually to the water, but he was moving the opposite direction. Ben moved faster now, making a jog down the trench, and seeing a slight curve all the while. The trench mustve carved around the entire farm, catching any infected that stumbled onto the land. It was a clever idea, but at this point, a little inconvenient for him. Either way, if there was a truck in the barn, they wouldnt be getting it past the trench, so it was a no go plan. Ben was aiming to figure out how to get out of the thing before thinking too hard about their transportation.
The higher it spiraled up, the more the smell of rotting flesh was present. The thicker the smell, the tighter he gripped onto his handgun at this point. It was then that he felt a grab on his ankle, and instantly spun around and boot the corpse away from him. But it wasnt a hand on his boot, it was a rope snagged. After it was untangled, Ben tracked it down the trench another few meters, and then pulled tightly, running out of slack. Pulling it, guiding himself forward, he came to a larger hole in the trench, and could see that the rope was tried onto a tree branch high up. He wasnt climbed a rope in over five years, but it was definitely his ticket out of the trench. Making a little run, Ben jumped, and swung himself into the side of the hole, and then used the roots as footing to climb out, guiding himself higher with the rope.
After rolling back into the field, he seen that he was just entering the treeline off the property. A little climb was probably better then clawing up through the dirt, or taking a swim in the lake, especially with the backpack. Once making his way back to the house, Ben could see that the garage door was open, but wasnt sure if Molly found a vehicle or not. There wasnt any gunshots, and Madison didnt yell, so he guessed that the trench worked. The house was safe, just like Jericho told them. For all he knew, Jericho mightve been the one who dug the hole, this mightve even been his house. Speculation was pointless though, so long as they found a set of wheels and some extra supplies, the sidetrack wouldnt have been for nothing.
