"How...how long have I been out?"
Polly squirmed, but did as Katya told her to and didn't move, doing her best to stay still. She didn't know how bad the wound was, and was almost afraid to ask. As she tried to get comfortable again, Katya moved, and she let out a whine as the woman left her side. She didn't like the idea of her being by herself, and she was hoping that she had recovered some from the earlier episode she had experienced after she had beaten the man to death. Whatever it was, it had affected her deeply then, and probably still did now.
"Katya...wait. Please. Please don't go."
She put out a hand and grasped her arm, weakly pulling her back towards her. She still felt very weak, but she didn't want to be alone, and knew the other woman shouldn't have been alone either. They needed to comfort one another, and she wasn't going to let her pull away, not now.
"Katya I love you. Hold me, please. Just for a little while."

Katya stopped when she heard those 3 words, she couldn't even stop polly from pulling her towards her. "you don't know what your saying." katya said numbly, unbelieving. "I'm broken, a shell trying to flee the past. how could someone like you possibly love a monster like me."
she was polly open her mouth but they were both interrupted by the door slamming open and an old man with a shotgun pointing at them coming through the door. by the time the door had slammed against the wall polly had already drawn her pistol and aimed at the old man, shielding polly from him.
it was like a Mexican stand off.

Polly smiled, raising one hand and putting it on Katya's, lowering the weapon in her hand. She knew the man wouldn't shoot, not when he saw who she was with.
"Hey old timer, haven't seen you in a few weeks. Everything been alright?"
She propped herself up on one elbow, trying to keep from crying out in pain as she moved herself around. She couldn't believe that they were so close to her home. They were at absolute most a few days away from being back in her own bed. She could bring Katya home, her lover, her savior, and she could be introduced to her parents. But there was a few things they were going to have to work out.
She turned back to Katya and stroked her face, then giving her a deep kiss. It wore her out, but she was going to make the woman understand that she did love her, and deeply.
"I understand, and you're not a monster. You never have been."

Katya was still trying to get her head around what katya was saying. she loved her? Her? she gently moved away from polly so that the old man, face full of relief and worry, could go to her. she went over to one of the chairs in the cabin and closed her eyes, exhausted. "old man, wake me in a few..." she drifted of to a fitful sleep.

Polly smiled as the old man half hobbled, half ran to her side, kneeling down by her and touching her face, making sure that she was alright, hardly believing that she was alright. He was amazed that she had turned up, when she had disappeared from the last salvage run two weeks ago, she thought that she had been killed by the infected in the city, or captured by raiders. He couldn't wait to tell everyone that she had come back, and been safe.
"Your father has been going out, trying to find you. Glad to see you home girl!"
Polly turned on her side, wincing and causing the man to check her, and she laid on her back and let him examine her bandaging. She explained what happened while he checked her, and watched as he took it all in. She told him of their escape, and how Katya had saved her life multiple times since then. She left out how she had also become the woman's love slave, but she knew that he had heard her profess her love for the woman earlier.
"Don't tell anyone I am here yet. I don't want dad seeing me like this. And I still need to figure out how to tell him about Katya. She means so much to me, and she needs me. I can't handle all of that yet. I just need a few more days to get on my feet."
She sent the old man to put a blanket on Katya, wanting her to be comfortable. After she was able to convince him to help her to her feet, she began to slowly walk across the room to the sleeping woman, putting one pale hand on her cheek and smiling. She hoped the woman slept well, if not she would be there to comfort her. Her legs were weak, but she was able to keep from falling, thanks to the help of old man Wilkerson. While he was old, he was far from frail, strong as an ox and twice as stubborn. He was also the best whiskey maker in the area and she could definitely have used some.

katya's sleep wasn't peaceful, it was a repeated loop of polly on the ground shot, polly dying in her hands her skin burned off and screaming, polly tortured, mutilated, raped and killed. and yet all through that she felt a warmth surrounding her, comforting her. telling her it was alright, that she wasn't alone anymore.

"Your father isn't going to like this, not when he finds out you got hurt."
Polly placed a hand on Old Joe's withered arm, smiling as she took a sip of the burning amber liquid, glad that it numbed her pain a bit and allowed her to move a bit without everything hurting. She wasn't going to be able to walk properly until her back healed, but she was at least able to get up unassisted.
"I know, but both of us need time to ourselves, time to recover before he sees us. I don't want him blaming her. I'd be dead five times over if it wasn't for her. Wasn't for her saving me, keeping me from harm, protecting me."
Old Joe looked over at the sleeping woman. Every time she called out Polly's name, or squirmed under the blanket he had placed on her, he would watch her to make sure she wasn't coming after them. She had obviously been a survivor, and was one of the Roamers as he liked to call them, nomads that moved between the settlements trading and generally staying away from the more populated areas. Weren't as bad as raiders, but were a queer kind of people to him. Clearly Polly had taken a liking to her, and vice-versa. Now that was going to something her parents were going to take hard.
"You know your parents always wanted grandchildren. This might make things complicated. You sure you want to do that?"
Polly ran her fingers over the collar she wore around her neck, smiling that same lopsided grin she had growing up. He was used to seeing it, and was glad that she seemed to be alright, other than the bullet wound she was recovering from.
"They'll have to deal with it. I know we have some empty homes near the settlement, I think we are going to get one. I can talk her into it, into letting me be the housewife, letting me take care of her as much as she takes care of me."
She got up, teetering a little, but able to walk upright with little pain, and went to her lover, her Mistress, and kissed her forehead, tucking the blanket back around her and smiled, whispering in Katya's ear.
"Sleep well. I'll be waiting for you."
She turned back to Joe, heading towards the table and the whiskey. She could use a bit more before she went to bed.
"Let her sleep for a few more hours. She carried me here, I don't know for how long. I kept passing out, and she needs as much rest as she can get. I don't care if she sleeps all night."

It wasnt just all night. Katya had been so focused on protecting polly, getting her home, that she hadnt cleaned her wound, causing infection to set in.
She had cleaned and sterilized the wound at the cabin, and she had a very strong immune system which easily beat off the infection, but the lack of sleep, exhaustion and the energy her body needed to heal made her sleep for almost 2 whole days. And almost that entire time, the nightmare continued. It was about for the last quarter that the nightmare ended, replaced by something wonderful.
Her and polly, a small house, just a few rooms. Sleeping in each others arms, joking, having fun together, making passionate love together. It was peaceful, bright, and happiness. A meadow of heaven.
That was when katya woke up.

Polly was just getting back out of bed when she saw Katya stir. She was so happy to see her awake that she nearly hurt herself again jumping out of the bed to be by her side. She had been worried, but was glad that the woman had gotten the rest she needed. She got to the woman's side a little slower than she had been wanting to.
"Katya! You're awake, finally!"
She kissed the woman, hugging her and smiling as the woman was rousing from her sleep. She still looked haunted, but not as much as she had been when they had arrived two days prior. She only wished that the woman had slept in bed with her, but she understood that she had needed the time to be away from her, as much as she didn't like it.
"We have coffee. Well, it's chicary, but still works the same. We're trying to get the coffee growing, but the beans are hard to get going here."
She realized she was talking too fast and too much, but she was happy that the woman was awake again. She slowly walked back to the kitchen, and brought the woman a steaming cup of black liquid, holding it out for her. She was clad in only a long shirt, and the collar Katya had given her. She was certain that if she was in better condition she would have kneeled when she offered it to her.
"Old Joe is oyut, so it is just us for right now. I'm happy to see you awake now."

It took katya a couple seconds to register that this wasn't a dream, and a few more to fully realise that polly was there, kissing her, embracing her. "your still wearing the collar." she said half in teasing, half in wonder. A small smile slowly growing on her face as she gently embraced the woman, her woman she thought in wonder, in front of her. She took and set the chicary coffee down on the table beside her, and gently maneuvered polly onto her lap, bringing her closer into her embrace. And that was how she first met the parents when they barged through the door. "oh what now!"

Polly nearly fell from the woman's lap as her parents came into the door, nearly taking it off the hinges as they did so. She calmed Katya, putting one hand on her arm, and making sure no weapons or obscene gestures were had. The last thing they needed was someone else shooting her, or at her. She figures that the old man wouldn't be able to keep the secret, she just wished she was wearing more clothes when they came, and that was in better shape. She could walk, but the injury was still painfully apparent. She wouldn't be able to hide it from them, and knew that it would make them worry more.
"Mom! Dad! I've missed you!"
Polly slowly got off Katya's alp and hugged them both, crying out in pain as they both nearly crushed her in their embrace. They immediately let go, and Polly felt her legs go weak. She leaned on her dad for support until the pain and nausea passed, and then readied herself for their interrogation.
(I'll let you handle the parents. I'm never good with this one).

"I know you've probably got a million and one questions for your daughter but can they wait? as you can see she is injured and needs as much rest as possible to heal."
the parents stopped their questions before they even began and stared at katya, who had gotten up and was moving towards them, or more accurately towards polly. she gently took polly from her parents and guided her to the bed, despite her quite protests. slowly she got polly back into the bed, covered her with the sheets, and kissed her gently, lovingly.
"be quiet now and sleep. you got shot recently after all, and I don't want to have to punish you so soon after." she whispered in polly's ear.
polly giggled slightly and slowly fell asleep, and katya turned to her lovers parents. "alright, now, ask away, but quietly please."

"We should move away from her, let her rest. I have a feeling we have a lot to discuss."
Polly's father motioned towards the kitchen, and followed Katya and his wife towards the small kitchen table. There were enough chairs for them all to sit, and the smell of coffee was still hanging in the air. Polly's mother poured three cups, not seeing the one Katya left by the front door, and placed them in front of everyone. There was an uncomfortable silence as they tried to think of how to start.
"I think the first thing we both want to say...is that we are grateful for what you did. Joe told us what Polly had said, about being abducted, about you saving her and the others. You brought our daughter home to us, and as parents we are forever in your debt. And it seems she has become rather, ahem, attached to you in the time you've been together."
Polly's father stopped speaking, his face reddening a little as he tried to figure out how to continue along that vein of conversation, but her mother spoke up instead, placing her hand on Katya's her eyes wide and worried. Katya could tell where Polly got her looks from, she was simply an older version of the injured girl.
"How did she get injured? You said she was shot. By who?"

"Murderers who hunted humans for sport. they thought we were part of the hunt since we were apparently in the hunt zone. we came across a single hunter at first, he gave himself away with his laser targetter. I wounded him, polly questioned him, and when we found out about the hunt I...lost control, beat the man to death." both parents paled at that, but the mother kept her hand on katya's. "after that I was a bit out of it and started to keep moving down the road. polly was rushing after me, trying to get me to stop so she could talk I think. that's when I heard the gunshot and turned to see polly on the ground, shot." both parents saw the haunted look that came over her then, "she was just behind me, whats more the hunter I had killed tried to kill us from the start not wound. that bullet was meant for me, polly just got in the way." the mothers other hand went over her mouth at that point, but katya didn't notice, all she could see was polly on the road bleeding. "I got the bullet out, sterilized the wound and bandaged it, and then a group of 5 hunters, the ones who had shot polly sidled up, bragging that they would rape and kill us." she looked into the fathers eyes at that point, "I killed three of them out right and left 2 for dead, their knees shot out and bullets in their stomachs, screaming." both parents blanched at that, but katya continued, she would not sugar coat anything, lie about anything. "after that I picked polly up and rushed for her home. I only stopped to change polly's bandages, certainly not for sleep, and about on the third day I came across this place, and you know what happened after that."

Both of Polly's parents looked shaken, evidently the story that Old Joe had told them was a little less blunt, more sanitized for their sakes. The sat in silence for a little while, both of them clearly having a hard time taking in what had happened to the couple on their way back to the settlement. Not wanting to be rude, Polly's mother took the woman's hand again, squeezing it, trying to comfort her and bring the woman back to the present.
"I'm Anne. You brought her back to us. My husband is right. You brought our daughter home to us, and we can never thank you enough. I know our daughter, even if she had seen the shooter, she would have put herself between them and you. She's that kind of girl, woman. Brave, reckless, and caring. She...she loves you, I could see that when we came in. I never expected this, but I can respect it. Robert can too, won't you?"
Robert, Polly's father, looked a little uncertain. There was a age different between the two women, and be it that they were the same gender, he looked a little concerned, but his facial features softened and he smiled, putting a hand on Katya's shoulder, grip firm but friendly.
"I know you learned how to survive out there, and because of that both you and Polly are still alive. But, if you want, you can stay here, in the community with us. There are plenty of homes in the area that are free, and with a little work we can get you both setup. When she wakes, I know she is going to have that on her mind. You'd be welcome here. You're a fighter, and you care about her. Please, stay."
