Resident Evil 2. It reinvented the Survival Horror Genre- it improved on all the base aspects of the original Resident Evil and it included the largest storyline arc in gaming for almost a decade. The character depth, amount of information and overall feeling of the game, to me, doesn't even come close to an experience of any game to date.
I have never played a game that was ever better than Resident Evil 2 at it's time. No game has ever really released with such passion and depth in it's infancy. That's why I love it.

Heh, as much as I play and enjoy Resident Evil 5, I would have to agree completely with Merios. Though I wish I could put two votes, because Resident Evil 5 is my favorite for gameplay, graphics, multiplayer, mercenaries, and with all the new DLC out for it, its just a powerhouse of fun wether your alone or have a friend over. But, im giving it to RE2. I can still go back and have a fun time playing it. If they ever do a remake of it like they did with the original Resident Evil, I would be a happier man. Merios covered it However, if youve played Darkside Chronicles, its as close as were going to get to a remake until that day comes.

RE3 is still leagues ahead of every other Resident Evil game in my heart.

One REII, plz. Hold teh Tofu, it givez me gas. >.>
As a whole, REII was an amazing experience, even though I was only so young when I first laid my hands upon it's double jewel case.
Playing through it, all four possible ways, simply redefined what "Replay Value" means today.
That, and to this day I still cannot figure out how Leon and Claire managed to stay apart for as long as they did, while being in the same building. <.<;
The dramatic change of pace was an eye opener, too. There would be somber moments, and "ZOMG IS THAT A DEAD CHICK ON HIS DESK?!" moments. One minute, you're sliding bookshelves around, the next, you're being chased by a successful T.
The small details really set this game aside too. Sure, the dialogue could have been... What's the word... Good...?
But that's why we've come to love RE. It's become a running gag; the dry wit and tasteless jokes.
Fun Thomas Belmont Fact: When my brother and I were first playing through REI, before Jill is crushed by the weight-trigger trap, with Barry saving her and the lulzy line after... I literally ****ed myself ROFL'ing.
We had to stop playing for ten minutes to calm down. I've never laughed so hard in my life. >.>; Kinda one reason why I love RE.

Has anyone played RE and Dead Rising? Cos they are both made by capcom, and DR have put a small reference to the Jill almost crushed bit. In the mall there is a shop called 'Jill's Sandwiches'. Figure it out for yourself

I have to say, RE3 was my favorite out of the series. If RE5 had focused more on horror, then it would definitely have earned that title, but it's an action game, so it fell short. Now, why would I pick RE3? Because it scared me, I mean really SCARED me. Sure RE2 had those creepy moments, and then the cheap OMG ZOMBIES HANDS IN THE WINDOW!!!!!!! but RE3 had Nemmy...good ol' Nemmy. By far my favorite enemy in the RE Series. He was invincible, he was relentless, he was slow, lumbering, and a friggin' Juggernaut. Oh, and I forgot to add, he had a ROCKET LAUNCHER. Just to top it off, he could talk. When the music got all dark and creepy I stopped rushing and began wishing that I had grabbed that beautiful little magnum sitting in the magic Item Box. Plus, it signified the end of an era. Sure RE:CVX moved on with the zombies, but 3 ended Raccoon, and began the transition to RE4, in which everything I loved about Resident Evil was reinvented to please a wider audience. So, in short, RE3 was the last SCARY RE game I played, and that's why I love it.

I agree, Nemesis is what scared me the most in the entire series; especially on first playthrough (Obviously) where everything is unexpected. He was the creepiest looking monster and Capcom crafted the most well thought out theme music for him better than any theme for any other monster in the series.

Yeah, I agree with RE3.. But to me, the game felt almost emotionless. Though, it was the only "scary" Resident Evil game i've ever played. The fact that Nemesis burst through whenever he damn well pleased and you could never remember if he was going to burst in next time you visited the room or ne-KER-BOOM.
Yeah. It was shocking, to say the least, but I could barely bring myself to trudge the game to the end. My opinion, of course.

RE2 hands down. Claire>Jill IMO. The soundtrack is part of what really stands it out from the crowd. The RPD Hall theme is just so iconic. They remade the first one on the Gamecube and I really really want them to remake the second for 3rd gen consoles.
I've heard various things about RE5... mainly that whilst being a "Resident Evil" by name, it's way off by nature, more of a third person shoot em up. And from what i've seen it does look fairly lame...

Resident evil 2 for a number of reasons;
-- Great step forwards from RE1 in terms of gameplay, character and level design. -- Improved enemy AI; Zombies that can quick turn and Cerberus that can actually navigate around an obstacle ftw. -- Nice array of new weapons; Customised weapons for Leon and submachine gun was a nice touch. -- Great new enemies; Lickers will always be irritating, especially when they leap and curve around a corner for big damage. -- Amazing boss fights; who the hell didn't like Birkin and Mr. X? -- Such a great storyline; best arc yet. -- Alternate Scenarios; switching from Claire A to Leon B and vice versa was a nice touch. -- Minigames. I just love Battle Mode. I just like thinking of Battle Mode as an alternative storyline to the canon RE2. -- Hunk and Tofu. Who doesn't like them? -- Good dialogue for the most part; "AdaWAIT" -- Not many puzzles thank God; I like the concept of puzzles but when I'm doing puzzles for too long I get bored very quickly.

is there some reason why Resident Evil 0 isn't on the list? It is part of the main series and one of my favourites (well maybe not as much a favourite as RE2 but that's because I haven't played it as often yet)

Well, if you add resident evil 0, you have to start adding a lot more, including every release on the gamecube. They were never the best.

No, I agree, Resident Evil 0 was a major part of the storyline... I loved Zero, it was amazing, and unique in the sense that you switched between characters mid game. Next to RE2, that was my favorite, hands down. That, and my very, very first GameCube game. I remember not even getting a Memory Card with mine, so I couldnt save the game! I became a master of the first two hours by the time I actually got my hands on one, Hahaha.
