Tim maneuvered the RV slowly through the narrow avenue, careful not to make any sound. Most of the houses are barricaded, the doors nailed to prevent the undead from getting in. The sun is rapidly setting, threatening to plunge the doctor in the dark. With nightfall fast approaching, it would be wise to find a secluded place to stop for the night. There are more of them than usual during the dark, walking in their endless quest for fresh meat, and Tim is not stopping to observe them here. No, he’ll have to get out into the main road, out of the city and into the suburbs. Out there only a few walk around, and not the horde that infest the major highways even now.
Something moved in front of the car. Quick as a flash, a person appeared in front of him and did what looked to Tim as a funny chicken dance. “Wait, wait! Thank God, help me please!” A thin young man was waving his arms wildly. He came out of nowhere and Tim nearly rammed the van at him. His hand moved towards the RV’s horn, but he quickly pulled it back. The sound attracts those things.
The doctor opened a window. ”What the hell is wrong with you, a**hole?”
The young man was breathing fast. “Please sir, my wife – she’s about to give birth!”
”Do I look like a midwife to you? Get out of the way or I’ll ram it on ya.”
He started to whimper. “Sir please! PLEASE!”
The man was making too much noise. No doubt he’ll draw a sizeable herd in for sure. ”Jesus H. Christ, alright, alright! Get your wife inside. Bring something to cover the bed. Don’t want to leave a scent and attract those zombies from miles around.”
Tim stopped the engine and unlocked the door as the man fetched his wife. A few seconds later both of them emerged from a garage. They both looked very young, like high school or college students. The man helped his wife up the steps and towards the bed. He spread out a couple of blankets on the bed, and then took his shirt off for additional cover. David looked up from where he was taking a nap. The strangers aroused his curiosity, and he stood up to sniff the couple. The man went back and locked the RV door.
Tim pulled the young man aside and warned him. “No noise from the both of you, or I’ll throw you all out and don’t you think I won’t.”
The man nodded. “I swear it sir, on our lives.”
”But I don’t care about your lives.”
“On my child’s life then! Surely you can’t leave it here to die?” The man was desperate and offended, but did his best to hide it.
Tim ignored the guy and squatted beside the woman. She was wheezing and gasping for air. Her husband stood beside them, bewildered and not knowing what to do. “My water just broke!” She called out in panic and started sweating.
”No sh*t.” Tim prepared himself for the procedure. Since they don't have any sanitation equipment, the water from the faucet will have to suffice.
“AURGHGRAAAAAH! *Huff huff huff* HGGRK ROOOOLAND! YOU WORTHLESS WASTE OF MALE TISSUE! F*******CK YOU!”
The woman screamed at the top of her lungs as she pushed a watermelon out of her baby hole. Roland. Probably the guy’s name. Her husband was at her side, trying hard not to wet his pants.
”I SAID NO NOISE, DAMMIT!” Tim walked towards the RV door, prepared to throw the people out. He’d rather have these people eaten than be devoured himself.
“Sir please,” the man pleaded again. “Just a few minutes more. It’s coming out.”
The doctor turned around, dragging his feet to the bed. ”Christ, that smell.” Tim turned his head and squinted his eyes, his stomach threatening to eject the tinned sardines he ate two hours ago. David raised his head and wagged his tail, appearing very interested at the unexpected event.
~A few hours later~
”It’s a boy.” Tim handed the baby to the mother, who cuddled it as Tim went to the driver’s seat for some air. The man stayed with his wife for a few minutes, then followed the doctor and sat on the other seat.
“Thank you sir. I didn’t know what to do.” He paused for a while, fumbling for words to say. “I knew you were a doctor. I recognized you – and your car. My name is Roland Troye, I used to get examinations from you.”
”Eh, your name sounds familiar.” He thought for a while. “Ah yes, I gave you a prostrate exam before.”
An awkward silence followed for a few minutes.
”How old are you?”
“Twenty sir. Same as my girlfriend. Her name is Melissa, by the way.”
”Good grief. Aren’t you both too young to raise a kid, and during a time like this? What were you thinking?”
The man stopped for a moment. “I was thinking that I might soon be dead. Not able to have me a Mrs. Troye. Not able to have a bunch of little Rolands. Not able to grow old and see my grandchild.” He looked sad.
”You didn’t give it much thought. You think your son will have a wonderful childhood and grow up to be my age? What if that baby started bawling? You think those zombies will ignore that dinner bell?” Tim was skeptical. He can’t imagine making a child go through so much pain. Obviously the baby will not experience the childhood that Tim had.
“That doesn’t mean we should stop living. I’m willing to do anything, just to keep them safe.”
The old doctor grunted in response. Maybe, just maybe, these people will have a normal life somewhere.
The teenager would have talked more, but their conversation was punctured by a number of fists slamming at the RV walls. At the first bash Tim grabbed his hunting rifle out of instinct. Roland likewise took out a pistol.
”No time for that, hold your wife, make sure she doesn’t fall off the bed!” Tim started the engine and stepped hard on the gas pedal, crashing on a few zombies in front of the RV in the process. Wherever he’s going, it will sure be a lot safer than staying within the city.
