Having switched his personal radio to the transmitting frequency, Arc heard the distress call once again, and just as he got to the back parking lot, he responded to let Samantha Brooks know he was coming. "Cpl. Griffin of the UBSC, detail your location, I repeat, detail your location. Over." He wasnt going to take any risks in locating her if he didnt have to, this had to be fast and easy to maintain his pace. The quicker he located the civilian, the quicker he could get back to the evacuation zone.
As he got inside the building, the lights had been turned on, which was strange enough because the switchboard for the main power breaker was in the basement. Still, he decided to go with the initial plan, and head to the top floor. Arc could check for signs of other survivors in the basement after.
~~~
With the last fuse in place, the power was restored to the fourth and all remaining floors, at least the lights. Some of the fuses had been black, meaning they couldnt be used, but it was better then nothing. Without a doubt, Sam was smart, and wouldnt take long for her to figure out that he was the one who turned on the power in the basement. Stepping back out into the hallways, Edward went to leave the hospital through the parking garage via the elevator. But as the door opened, something jumped out at him, knocking him to the ground. Fumbling his handgun to point upright, he fired multiple rounds into the reptile like beast, but it was only knocked backwards. Two more the head seemed to stun it, but it didnt take it out, and hearing a click from the gun, he had no choice but to fall back into the room, slamming the door shut behind him.
The radio crackling to life as someone responded made Sam jump. She had almost given up hope that anyone would respond. She quickly grabbed the radio and pushed the transmit button, responding to the caller. Her voice was full of hope and excitement as she replied.
"Corporal Griffin, I'm....I'm...s***, I'm on the...South East corner of the floor. I have the door locked. I don't know how many of those things are outside. Do you have a weapon, over?"
She had weapons, and supplies, but she didn't want to advertise that, just in case this man was a looter. If he was a threat, she'd handle it. If he wasn't, then she was going to be rescued. Again.
Sam stood up, and looked around for anything else she could find for clothes. The sweats were covered in blood and dirt, so she slipped them off and busied herself with trying to find anything else she could find. Her backpack was pretty full, but there may have been other things she hadn't found, like another medical kit or another weapon just in case.
Rushing to the top floor of the hospital, Arc jogged down the hallway, his assault rifle in hand. He would have responded, but making contact with one of the shamblers, he quickly put it down with a well placed shot from long range. In a matter of seconds, he was at the southeast corner, and aimed his rifle forward, keeping the two far doors in sight before he responded. "Positive. That shot you heard was my own. Come out slowly and unarmed." Arc really didnt know who this girl was, but he wasnt going to take any chances either. He assumed there wasnt a chance she made it this long without a gun of some kind.
~~~
The door was sturdy enough to hold for now, but not long after, the ripping stopped, and the room was quiet once again. Edward turned around to see the room was full of dead bodies laying out on tables under the lights, all ready for transportation. Most of them had already been in bodybags, so even if they did turn, it would prevent from them harming him. There was a lot more than he previously seen the first time he was here, about twelve in total, when there had been only two when he made his first investigation.

"I'm opening the door. I am armed, please don't shoot. I'm not coming out without a weapon. I won't shoot if you don't."
Sam unlocked the door, opened it slowly, and peeked her head out. She saw the soldier not far from the door, an assault rifle pointed at her. This was the time she really hoped he wouldn't be trigger happy. She held out the hand with the shotgun, showing she didn't have her finger on the trigger. She kept her other hand visible as well when she stepped out, not making any sudden movements. She had her backpack, the gun belt around her hip, and her now blood covered cheerleader uniform. She hoped he could see that there was no way for her to hide anything else on her.
"I'm stepping out. Please don't shoot. I really want to get out of this hospital alive."

The moment Arc seen the girl, he immediately lowered his gun in response. "Jesus Mary and Joseph...", he gritted out. She had more firepower then he did, and was wearing a skimpy cheerleading outfit, which was not covered with blood and god knows what else. He diverted his eyes, not wanting to seem rude, and spoke up in a stern voice. "Corperal Arcian Griffin of the Umbrella Biohazardous Countermeasure Service. We have a an evacuation helecopter arriving at eighteen hundred hours, and im escorting any civilians. So far, sadly, your the first and only one weve been able to save. Your lucky we heard your distress call and responded."
Being as professional as possible would hopefully put the girl at ease, but it didnt seem like there was much else for her here in this hispital. "We need to move, the rest of my unit is north of here at St. Michaels Clock Tower waiting for extraction. We have no supplies, but a secure location." Looking around the room to see the mess the girl had been staying in, Arc felt bad for her. She looked like she been through hell, and slept in it. "Are you aware of any other survivors in the building? Clearly you werent the one who got the lights back on when I entered..."
~~~
As Edward stepped closer, the body bags in the room started to shift around. Though he wasnt in any danger, he quickly put his attention on the few that hadnt been in bags, ready to put a round in their head. But as he got closer, he noticed that they two bodies were the ones he had examined two days prior.
Sam almost broke down and cried again when she heard the words "evacuation." She was going to be saved. Edward had saved her, and this man was going to make good on his promise. She moved towards the man, then threw her arms around his neck, crying into his shoulder. She was going to get out of here, she was going to live.
After a few moments her cries went down to sniffles, and she managed to get a grip on herself. She turned slightly so he could see her backpack bulging with supplies. It looked like the bag would buy her a ticket out of the dead city.
"I've got supplies, and a car downstairs. We can get out of here, there's no one else. Edward....he...he was bitten. I think he turned on the power, but I don't know where he is right now. We could try and find him, but I..."
The last time he had anybody throw his arms around him, Arc had been stabbed, so his reaction had been a blunt one. But as the girl cried into his shoulder, he relingquished any ideas that she was the least bit hostile, and comforted her. This was part of his training, but he was always good with comforting people, regardless of who they might be. "Hey, easy, chica, its okay. Its okay..." When she calmed down a bit, Arc listened to what she had to say before moving.
"Hold onto that, we might need it. Your guns, too. So this Edward was the one who turned on the power? The breaker is in the basement, we can take the elevator down from here." Quickly moving to the steel doors, Arc mashed the button, and waited for a ding. His gun was ready in case anything was on the other side, but thankfully there wasnt. He stepped in, waiting for the girl to get in as well before hitting the button for the Basment Two level. "Samantha, wasnt it? You can call me Arc. If your friend was bitten, im not sure we can help him, but we can at least lay him to rest, say goodbye if you need to." Once again, Arc wasnt trained for this, but it only seemed like the right thing to do. The evacuation wasnt until this evening, so they had enough time to spare, maybe even find any other survivors lucky enough to access a radio.
~~~
Checking the tags on the two corpses, Edward cross referenced them to the documents on the table, which held the reference data logged by the hospital. The shuffling of the bodies had been unnerving, but he didnt let them stop him from his work. Far as he was concerned, whether on his death bed or not, he was on he job. Any other information he could find out and record would be a step in the right direction for whoever found his report.
According to the documents, the two victims had been found in the Arklay Mountains, but the bite marks were from a wild dog. Edward concluded that these were the roots to the virus, the wild animals carrying the disease. But still, why hadnt these two turned and the others had? And what did that mean for his own wound? Did this mean he wasnt going to turn? To record his findings, Edward reaching into his pocked, but couldnt find his tape recorder. Then he remember he had left it upstairs. It didnt matter, he could find another one if he had to, as everything was still fresh in his head.

Sam nodded, and got into the elevator with Arc. They had to find Edward and make sure he was okay. If he wasn't, then they needed to make sure he was...taken care of properly. It wasn't right to leave him walking around like that if he had turned. She had only seen people that had turned already, she'd never seen someone actually go through the change. She hoped he hadn't, and that he could come with them.
"I hope he's alright. I can't believe you haven't found any other people."
Umbrella was a huge corporation, and had large ties with the city. Their new baseball field had been built by the company a few years ago and she had heard her father talk about them more than once. What were they doing trying to evacuate people? Where was the military? Someone had to know something was going on in the city.

From the top floor, the Elevator ride seemed to go for a few minutes, probbaly because the working mechanism had been in a low power mode. Getting the bottom floor could take awhile, but it was better than fighting through to the bottom floor, knowing how many of those undead were waiting for them below. "None that we could save, I mean, sure, we found lots of people. But, you know, right? Gahh, this is so messed up." It wasnt that he was sad about losing the people, Arc was disappointed that they couldnt help anybody else, that he couldnt, aside from Samantha. But she showed him that if there are others here in the city, theyre alive and willing, so maybe this day would turn out to be successful after all.
As the elevator got to the bottom floor, the doors opened, and Arc quickly stepped out with his rifle drawn. Looking both ways in a very trained pattern, he deemed the hallway clean, seeing a number of the bodies on the floor already with bullet holes in them. Samanthas friend was definitely down here, and chances are, he didnt get taken out by any of the walkers first. The other doors on the basemnt level had been locked out by the power outage, and hadnt yet come on, leaving only one door for them to check. But as he stepped closer, the sound of the infected on the other side could be heard. "Samantha, it doesnt sound too good in there. Are you sure about this? I mean, if hes already, this seems like a pretty dumb move, no offence.
~~~
He had to be sure, Edward had to be one hundred percent possitive. Using his pocket knife, he cut open the first bodybag, and the putrid smell of flesh filled his nostrils. The corpse had been too demonposed by this point to even sit upright. Using the same knife, he stabbed the infected through the eye, and then checked over the body for wounds. All from a human. Going for the second, he did the same thing, with the same result, all human bites. The pattern was starting to form, and Edward was convinced that the bites from a human infected with the virus is what caused them to transfer, but a bite from an animal carrier wouldnt transfer the virus because its blood cells were different.
Looking at his arm again, however, it begged the question why it hadnt been healing. Edward took off his jacket, flinging it to the floor, and undid the bandage, wiping away the blood that he could with his sleeve and exposing the wound. Why wasant he healing properly if he wasnt infected? The smell of blood this close to the other bodies mustve triggered a reaction, because in a matter of moments, a number of the infected corpses from the other bodybags had broke free, and tumbled to the floor upright. Without any ammo left in his handgun, and the only bullets in the boxes he left with Sam, Edward was force to back against the wall, having only his knife against the seven shambling fiends.
"If he's turned, we owe it to him to make sure. I owe it to him. He saved my life back at the school. I thought they were rioters. I'd be dead if it wasn't for him."
Sam looked over the bodies, and none of them were Edward. For that she was glad. As they neared the door, thumping could be heard inside. Leveling the shotgun at the door, she kicked the bottom of the door to see if anything made a noise. A human noise.
"Come on, this way!", he yelled out to the shamblers in front of him, trying to lead them to one side of the room so he could dart to the next. If the plan worked, Edward thought that he could lure them close enough to the wall so that hed be able to move around the tables and to the door in time before they caught him. It was a stupid plan, and it didnt work, and only just drew them in closer to him.
Suddenly, a series of shots were fired through the room, and the undead had began falling. Edward wasnt sure who the shots belongs two, but there were two sets of them, and within a matter of time, the zombies had all fallen to the ground, and they remained still. From the other side of the room, Edward seen Sam, who had been once against wearing her skirt and toting the shotgun he left her. Along side him was another man, who looked to be a soldier, holding up a rifle. "Sam, you came back for me..."
But thats when Edward realized that one of the shots from the machine gun had hit him in the side, and before he could get anymore words out, Edward fell to the ground, passing out from the bloodloss of both his arm and the bullet wound.
"EDWARD!"
Sam went running to the prone man, dropping the shotgun and digging through her pack, trying to find the medkit. She had to stop the bleeding, had to see how serious it was. She tried to remember the training about bullet wounds, her hands frantically tearing through the medkit to get the gauze and medical tape. The wound didn't look bad, but if she didn't stop the bleeding he wouldn't make it, and then he would come back, and then he'd try to kill them.
"Arc, shut the door. Lock it. I need to time to get him stabilized. And when you get the door shut, help me lift his feet. I need to keep him from going into shock. C'mon man, you can't do this to me. You're not going to die here!"
She saw the round had gone through him, so she quickly doused both entry and exit holes with the alcohol and began placing the gauze, taping as she went. She kept looking at his face, hoping he would regain consciousness, and not start trying to eat her.
Skillfully taking down the undead was part of his training, headshots, usually three round bursts to the upper portion to make sure it was clean. But due to the lack of ammunition on the real operation, he used single fire, controlled his aim, and made sure to land a headshot. Once the shooting started, they came to him, and it was easy. But when Samantha ran to the man, Arc noticed that one of his rounds hit him in the side. Friendly fire was common, but didnt make it anymore right. Cursing to himself, Arc slung his rifle at his side, and helped out.
Arc was surprised at how well adjusted and quick thinking Samantha was, but didnt have time to praise her. When Edward had been in place, Arc moved back to the door, but he didnt lock it. The man was in no shape to move, he needed to secure the room first. It all happened so fast, there wasnt room to beat himself up over mistakes, only try to correct them. He seen the remaining undead that were left on the ground, still squirming, and took this opportunity to kill them off with his combat knife.
Looking at the wounded civilian, Arc just watched Samantha patch up. She was doing everything by the book, and even though he himself had field medic status, it became obvious that she knew what she was doing and didnt need much of his help. "Hes going to be fine, should come to soon. You stay with him, im gonna go secure a route back to the evacuation zone so we can move him faster. Ill be back, dont worry. You still have that radio, ill contact you when im on my way back."
With that, Arc went for the door, locking it behind him using the digital control panel to make sure it was secure.
Samantha nodded, and continued her work. Once she placed him on his side, and checked him over again, she turned to Arc as he was leaving.
"Hurry back okay? I don't think I can move him myself when we try to make a run for it. I'll need your help."
She picked up the shotgun again, and repacked the medkit and other items back in their place. When they got ready to move, she was going to need to move fast. She also took Edward's pistol, reloaded it, and placed it in her pack as well. He wasn't going to be able to shoot it, so she stowed it away for later. She had a feeling they were going to need it.
"Just stay still Edward. Come back to us okay? We need you to wake up, please. Please wake up alive."
His eyes darting open, Edward tried to sit upright, but felt a sharp pain in his side. Most of his shirt had been pulled up and tucked, and a large bandage covered around his torso. He felt like he had been shot, and trying to remember the last thing he heard before passing out, it was a probable idea. The bandage on his previously wounded arm had been replaced, and this time, stopped bleeding. With no idea how long he had been out, Edward looked, and spoke when he seen Sam. "I heard shooting, are you okay? Who was with before I passed out?" The question was ironic, considering he had been the one to get hurt in the process, but he cared for Sam, and wanted to make sure she was okay. Edward tried to sit up again, but fell back in place, knowing full well he couldnt move, wincing in pain.
~~~
After getting back to the clocktower, the sun had been nearly fully up in the sky. The street were a lot easier to navigate in the daylight, but it didnt make the infected any less harder to take down. He wasnt exactly sure how his unit would react to him bringing back a few survivors, but their chopper could take them, at least five or six if they made a little more room.
He pushed open the doors to the gate that moved around to the back courtyard, but when he turned the corner, he was shocked to find smoke. Rushing to the other side of the hedges, Arc seen the chopper on fire from the inside, and the bodies of his comrads laying on the ground. Looking around, however, there werent any infected in sight. Upon further investigation, he noticed they all had gunshots through their body armor. Somebody did this, and not just anybody with a gun, somebody with access to high powered weaponry. Skill.
Thoughts and idea raced through his mind, but it all came to a halt when he realized that their own escape from the city had gone up in flames. But it wasnt just that. On top of everything, there was something even worse that relished in his mind. "This is bad... Very bad... Dammit!" Arc hit the side of the choper in anger, and tried to at least get what he could from the wreck before the gas tank went up as well.
