Polly waved at some of the kids as they went by, glad to see them running around the settlement. Over the years it had grown from a small group of scared survivors into a fully functioning, self-sufficient community that was a trading hub for the region. She was glad to see so many children, certainly more than the settlements around them, able to be children in the world they now found themselves in.
She cuddled into Katya's arm as they walked, knowing most people had gotten used to seeing the two together over the past few weeks, although she did get some questions every once in a while about the collar. She didn't mind though, she wore it as a badge of honor, knowing that she belonged to the older woman. Some people were still uneasy, but she did her best to make sure they understood that Katya was her lover, not her owner, even though when they were in the privacy of their own home that was certainly the case.
"It feels good to be out again, I hated lying on my stomach and being bedridden for weeks. Thank you for keeping me sane."

"Aren't you getting the roles mixed up? It was you keeping me sane in there." she said it teasingly but deep down it was the truth, Katya mind had been fried by everything that had been happened and only Polly's constant warmth and kindness had kept her from falling into madness.
she slid her arm from polly and wrapped it around her, doing some cuddling of her own, "besides, I think I kept you quite occupied while you were bed-ridden." Polly blushed at that, Katya had done quite a few things to her to help her pass the time.
they were getting close to the parents house, and could smell something wonderful coming from the structure. "come on, we don't want whatever that is getting cold."

Polly closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, enjoying the scent of home-cooked food coming from the house. Even though her parents had been over often to check on her, she still missed the smell of her mother's cooking coming from their kitchen. While she was glad that Katya and her had their own home now, and had been making it truly their place, there were times where she was homesick, and wished she was still under the same roof as her parents. She smiled at the silly thought, knowing Katya would never have felt comfortable sleeping in their home.
"It's a stew. You'll love it. There may even be some apple pie. Have you ever had it?"

"Yes, once a lifetime ago." she turned to whisper in polly's ear, "I doubt its as tasty as you though." she pulled the furiously blushing polly up the stairs and knocked on the door.
Ronald answered the door, saw polly blushing, and raised an eyebrow to katya. "I would have though she would stop doing that by now." "I hope not, she's so cute when she blushes."

The interaction between the two caused Polly to blush even further, almost hiding her face in Katya's arm like a child just to keep them from noticing. They had been doing this for weeks, almost acting like it was a competition to see which of them could embarrass her more. So far it appeared that Katya was winning, but when her father would talk about some of the ways he made her mother "happy," she would go beet red and act mortified until she could change the subject.
"I hate both of you sometimes. Come on, let's get in before the night watch gets ready to come out. They might try and sneak a meal in if we're not careful."

chuckling, katya led polly through the door and into the dining/ kitchen. both katya and polly had come over a lot since polly could start moving, which was fine since the food was excellent.
polly's mum hugged them both when they came in, which katya grinned and beared. it still felt weird being hugged by someone other than her lover. "You two are just in time! come on, take a seat and it'll be served." katya seated them both side by side so polly could hold her hand. it was cute and honestly reassuring so katya let it happen.

Polly silently thanks Katya as they waited for her father and mother to join them. The smell of the stew was making her mouth water, and she squeezed the other woman's hand as her mother came into the room, pot of the delicious smelling meal in her hands. Her father was behind her with bowls and silveware, lightly smacking her rump as he did. She was thankful her mother didn't drop the stew, or he might have had a riot on his hands.
"Mom, that smells wonderful! I don't think you've ever made a bad meal in your life."
She let go of Katya's hand and helped pass out the bowls, then watched as everyone took their seats. She loved being able to gather around the table with her family, and now that she was able to walk around without assistance, she was looking forward to cooking for everyone and having them over. She didn't want to admit it to Katya, but the woman was a terrible cook. She would feel much safer and productive by taking over the duties. She was more domestic than the other woman was anyways. She'd also be able to grow their garden once the seasons warmed again. For now it was getting too cold and too late in the year to even think of starting anything.

Katya watched polly's enthusiasm with a wry grin. she knew the other woman didn't like her cooking and for good reason. her cooking was borne from survival, you ate whatever was edible. Katya could cook almost anything so it was edible, maybe not tasty or with a nice texture but edible. plus she couldn't cook porridge nicely to save her skin, which is what she was told would be best. that is until she practically begged polly's mum for help.
that's when thankfully she took over the cooking for the patient, katya felt more at home cooking with a camp fire than in a kitchen.

As the family ate, Polly kept reaching over and touching Katya's hand, or giving her a quick kiss as they laughed and bonded over the meal and stories, some of them she wished that they hadn't come up. While Polly was able to keep from blushing too badly, she didn't manage to keep from staring when she saw what her mother was wearing. A flesh-colored leather collar was around her neck,an eerie similar design to what she wore.
"Mom...what are you wearing?"

Katya had noticed the leather collar on polly's mum earlier but had decided to keep quiet about it. whatever happened behind the bedroom door and such. But since polly had brought it up, the parents were blushing and suddenly quiet, as if to try and think about what to say. "polly, love, do you Really want to know THAT much about your parents?"
polly blushed furiously, and Anne shook her head, "No its fine, I guess I just put it on without thinking." She looked polly in the eye, "You can know that information, IF you tell me about your collar."
Katya grinned and looked over to Ronald. she raised her eyebrow at him in silent query, and he nodded ever so slightly, giving katya the same grin. "So Katya," Ronald asked, trying to change the subject. "how do you know so much about defensive layouts, military training and such? I was talking to the Colonel before and he kept saying that your 'suggestions' are not just excellent but what he should have thought of before."
Katya's grin faded, and she gave him a serious look before sighing. "well I guess if I don't tell someone the gossip mongers will come up with something ridiculous." "After my parents.....deaths, I was raised by a couple who were both former special forces. my step-father was a former scout-sniper of the Australian SASR, and my mother was of the Israeli unit 669. In order to help me with my.....problems, they taught me everything they could in order to help me do something positive." "they also brought in friends who also taught me." she smiled slightly, "I guess when you have so many people who are former and current special forces operatives home-schooling and essentially training a girl from when she was 6 years old, you really don't know what the result will be."

"That's why I call her my warrior woman. She's probably the most skilled fighter in the settlement. Can't think of anyone better to have by my side."
Polly avoided using the term dangerous, as she didn't want the woman to think she was afraid of her. Truthfully she wasn't, and felt more comfortable in her presence than with anyone else. She knew the woman would never hurt her intentionally, and protected her the way a parent might protect their child, simply with more lethal efficiency.
"And to think, I used to complain about the lessons you made me go through growing up!"

they all laughed at that, and katya squeezed polly's hand in silent thanks. "you know, I was surprised at polly today, she just would not get out of bed without help. I know my cooking isn't up to really living in a household but she has been practically salivating over coming here for a meal for days." everyone chuckled at polly's blush, she blushed so easily, katya thought it was adorable.
"what is your cooking like anyway? is it that terrible?" anne asked. "my cooking is based on survivalist needs, I can make anything edible and healthy and I know how to spot disease, rot and anything poisonous." she grinned ruefully, "texture and taste takes a back step to things actually being edible and healthy. I do however know how to make great jerky and I'm much better at cooking in the wilderness, I'm not used to cooking in a kitchen."

"Once I'm feeling a bit better, I won't mind doing all the cooking. Gives me something to do other than play in the dirt out back, which reminds me the next salvage run the settlement does we need to make sure we hit a few stores that carry them. They might be past their prime, but enough of them will grow and that's all that matters."
Polly knew it would be a while before Katya would allow her to go on a run, and realistically she knew she would be a burden, as she was still recovering from being shot and wasn't nearly as agile or strong enough to make the trip to and back. Besides, someone had to make the meals so she wouldn't come back to another one of Katya's specialties waiting on the table. She thought for sure the last one would finish her off.
"Oh, and I have a list that maybe the salvage team can look for. For you know, personal reasons."
She tried to hide her blush, but wasn't very successful. She hated that she turned red so easily. It didn't help that her lover and her parents liked to make it worse.

Katya slowly grinned, "Is this about the Egyptian cotton sheets?" Polly blushed further, causing Katya to chuckle, "those guys are going to get quite a shock." Ronald and Anne both looked confused, but they let it go. "You guys seem to scavenge for seeds quite a bit. what are your plans for when you cant find anymore?"

"We've been building up what we have stored, but it's hard to keep a good seed supply. Something we need to work on, and I think the council needs to finally acknowledge that before it becomes a problem, not after."
Polly was trying not to think about the sheets, or what happened on them, but she failed. Her face turning crimson, she focused on her food and didn't look up. After almost a month living with Katya, she thought she would be used to the effects the woman had on her. Evidently that was not the case. She hoped it wouldn't be this bad all the time.
