"...I'm pretty sure that your 'council' is about as efficient and effective as the United Nations was, but you guys have been surviving for years so who am I to judge."
she was really starting to get annoyed at the Council. for the past 3 weeks most of the council had either tried to get her to leave, lock her up, and in a couple of cases try to get her to marry their sons. they even tried once to get polly exiled but when Katya found out about it, she threatened to castrate them and force their genitalia down their throats. that's when they tried to have her locked up.

"They mean well, but sometimes they aren't the most effective. I guess they're better than nothing."
Polly was glad that soon they'd be going on runs again. She needed to get back out of the settlement for a while, and she could sense that Katya was getting cagey. She knew the woman didn't stay in one place for long, so the domestic lifestyle must have been driving her crazy. She'd do what she could to make sure the woman could go without having to worry about her, as long as she came back to their home after the runs she would be fine with it. She'd worry, and fret and silently hope she'd be done early, but she would be fine.

"could be better. for one you don't exile a person for being open with their relationship with a same-sex partner, not in this damn environment. and trying to marry me off to their sons!? seriously, what is this, the f**king dark ages?!"
Anne and Ronald were trying to hold in their laughter at the ridiculousness of the situation. Katya could see the humour, but she mostly felt annoyance. "don't either of you two laugh, your council is bloody ridiculous...I mean, the only thing that seems to work with them is threat of castration."
that's when they burst out laughing. "I'm pretty sure that whatever they had left has shrivelled up with your threats katya." Anne said, trying to breathe.

"I don't think we'll have to worry about them for quite some time. Eventually their sons will find other partners, I think most of them were terrified of you anyways!"
Dinner went on with small talk, and more complaining about the council from Katya. By the sounds of it she was going to be holding it against them for a long time. Polly finally came to the conclusion that she'd have to make her forget all about the council and their idiotic ways once they got back to their home.
"Pie, please tell me there is pie mom."

"yes dear, there IS pie."
then came the pie, and it smelled absolutely wonderful. "okay anne, you definitely need to teach me a few tricks." katya said, succeeding in not drooling. polly tried, and failed.
It was served up, and both katya and polly had spooned a bit and had raised it to their mouths. and then someone went and started banging on the door. "OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THATS GOOD IN THIS WORLD LEAVE US IN PEACE!!"

Polly sighed, and put the fork down, getting up from the table before Katya could. The last thing they needed was for her to shoot someone on her parent's doorstep. She could deal with whoever it was, though by the force put behind the knock someone was either in need of help, or was very, very angry.
"You eat, I'll see who it is. If I need help, you can shoot them and then eat my pie."
She made her way to the door, taking her time and finally opening the door a crack to see who was outside and what they wanted.
"Hello? What can I do for you?"

"Yeah, uh i'm here to see Katya? I have a message for her." Before the visitor even finished, Katya was at the door, looking at the unwanted messenger. He looked somewhat older than when she had seen him last, as if he had been shouldered with a lot of responsibility, that and he looked haggard.
"Jack." The sheer coldness of that statement shocked Polly, and made Jack weary. "Katya I'm" he barely got that out before katya's fist connected with his face and sent him flying. Katya walked toward him, "Polly, stay out of this." He slowly got back and was about to talk when Katya punched his face again. When he came at her, Katya suppressed a smile. He was skilled, more so than any of the local people, and was an accomplished fighter. But Katya had taught him everything he knew, and she easily bested him with a parry, knee and headbutt combo, putting him down on the ground again, groaning. "Are we even now?" He asked. "Yeah, we're even." She said before kicking him in the balls. Hard. It took him a bit to talk. "You said we were even!" "That was for interrupting Pie. Now stop whinging and come inside, I didn't hurt you that badly."

Polly watched as the man slowly stood back up, and on shaky feet began to walk back to the door. She held it open, giving Katya a disapproving look as they both came inside. She helped the man dust himself off, being careful not to pat him too hard for fear of aggravating any of his recent injuries.
"Mom, dad we have a guest. Can you make another setting for him?"
She wanted to ask Katya why she had beaten the man so savagely, but knew the woman would tell her in her own good time. She didn't keep much from her, which was something Polly greatly appreciated.

As all three came into the dining room, Anne and Ronald wearily looked at katya and jack's already prominent bruising. "Katya, would you introduce him?" Katya glared at Jack before answering. "His name is Jack Miller, and he is the son of the leader of one of the settlements back down south." "And the reason you beat him up?" "He deserved it. Now give the message already, you wouldn't have come all the way here to say sorry."
Jack seemed to further deflate as he looked at her. "Katya...Dad's dying. he's got a malignant cancer in his lungs. he ask me to tell you to come see him before he passed on."
Katya felt as If the world had fallen beneath her. Aleksander dying?

Polly put her hand on Katya's shoulder, guiding her to sit as she motioned for the man to do so as well, although the seat he chose was farther from the other woman, possibly for his own safety. She slowly knelt by the woman and got her to meet her gaze, trying to coaz her back from whatever past she was trying to relive.
"Katya, this person is clearly important to you. Let him finish talking, and then we will do whatever you wish. We can go visit him if you like. I'm well enough to travel."
She looked towards the man, motioning for him to continue. She wanted to know more, and she was sure Katya would as well. Whoever this person was, he was obviously important to her. Maybe it was someone she knew growing up?

"how long?" katya's voice was strained, she had had a much better relationship with Aleksander than with his son.
"He told me to come find you the day we found out, that was about a 45 days ago. I got to the city about 12 days ago, and ran into some raiders. killed some and interrogated the others. found a small settlement about a week from here and asked around. and here I am."
"It took me 20 days to get to the city, what delayed you?" "bad weather mostly, and skirting a large zed horde."
Katya looked down at the floor for several seconds before looking up at polly. "You sure you wanna come? the road back isn't exactly a pleasure walk."

"Absolutely. I'm ready to get back out there, and I wouldn't mind traveling far, as long as it's with you."
Polly put her head in Polly's lap, letting her hands gently stroke the woman's knees. She knew the woman needed her to come as well, and she wanted to be there for her as well. This was going to be hard, but it would be harder for Katya as she was the one losing someone that was clearly close to her. She would comfort and console the woman, and do everything she could to make the loss less soul crushing.
"I can have us packed in a little while, and we can leave at first light. I promise I won't be lazy."

katya smiled gently at polly, and gently rubbed her head. "I know you won't, just don't over do it okay."
Katya looked up at Jake, and frowned at his expression. "Jake." she said in warning. "I didn't say anything!" "I know your thinking it." that stopped him short.
gently moving polly's head, she stood up. "Anne, could you make us some travel mix? I'm going to go get things ready." She was about to leave the room when she stopped and turned around, "oh and Jake...you can have some pie."
She left the house and went towards the leatherworker. the guy turned around to greet her, "Katya, good, your order is ready." "Thanks, appreciate the promptness." she said goodbye after taking the package, and went back to the house to get the guns, ammo and equipment ready.

Polly watched as Katya left, knowing she'd be back soon enough. She didn't want to leave the man in the dining room with her parents, so she took a seat and watched as her parents brought out a meal for the man, and her mother went about filling a few leather pouches full of trail mix for their trip. She didn't know how long it would be, but she knew that Katya would more than likely attempt to shave several days from the trip to get back to the settlement faster.
"Why is this man so important to her? She's never mentioned anyone from her past before."

Jake shrugged at the question, "My father was like a favourite uncle to Katya. He's a former Spetznaz who knew her step-parents, and through them, katya."
he wasted no time getting stuck into the pie slice, and groaned in appreciation. "That is damn good! I don't think I've had anything this good." he noted the frustration and impatience on the woman's face and got back on topic. "After her step-parents deaths whenever she came to our settlement he always made sure she felt at home, talking to her, drinking with her and playing games with her and so forth. honestly I think he kept her from suiciding that year. kept her on this side of sanity, if barely."
he took another bite of pie, and slowly chewed as he thought of what to say next, "she told him that she would be heading north before she left. I think she tried to tell me as well but I was **** drunk at the time and was in the middle of a bar brawl with some scavengers."
he looked over to the woman guiltily, "I may have accidentally hit her with a bar stool that was meant for a scavenger. explains the anger."
