Katya raised an eyebrow at her old callsign, looks like Jake had spilled some beans.
"so you know my nick-name. do you know how I got it?"
"I got it when I beat an attempted rapist half to death and then stayed with the victim, comforting her till the police came." she smirked, "they weren't exactly happy with me, but since I had stopped someone being raped they let it slide."

"Good to know. You are a true avenging angel Katya. I'm glad I met you."
Polly made a quick breakfast of oatmeal, and some jerked beef. It would get them through the first part of the day, longer if they wanted to eat while they walked. She had plenty of trail mix and dried meats for the next few days, long enough to get them through a few days of forced marches if they were in an area that wasn't safe to stop for long periods of time. She tried to do her best to plan for things also. She didn't want Katya to have to do all the thinking for them.
"Alright, after we eat, we get moving. Mom can watch the house for us while we're gone. Figure it will be what, three weeks before we get there?"

"longer probably, its not exactly a short trip and with 3 people its going to be slower. not by much but its best to somewhat over prepare for this kinda long trip, you never know what will happen between here and there."
after eating, they quickly got ready for the trip, katya telling polly to put the armour on, "you never know."
when they were out the door, several people including polly's parents, the colonel, and many of the trainee's katya had been training had come out to see them off.

While Polly didn't feel encumbered by her new layer of protection, it was going to take some getting used to. She tested it out, moving her torso from side to side, jumping, raising her arms above her head. It felt almost like a second skin, and she knew Katya had taken very close measurements for it, more than likely after she had worn her out at night.
"I'm going to miss you all while I'm gone. Mom, take care of the house for us alright? And don't let anyone try and move in while we're out."
She knew there were still a few more homes being rebuilt, so there wasn't much chance of anyone trying to stake a claim there. She was more concerned about the council trying to give the home to someone else, which happened when people didn't return from long journeys. She silently prayed that wouldn't be the case.
"I'm ready to go. We're burning early morning light, right?"

"Right. Colonel, keep to the training doctrine I started with these guys. when we get back I expect them to be at the preferred level. If not," she grinned evilly, "I'm going to make them do the entire course again, with you also participating."
the colonel and the trainee's blanched at that. Katya chuckled inside her head, 'that put a fire under their arse.' she thought with glee.
shouldering the rucksacks, the group of three started moving out.

Polly let Katya take the lead, keeping herself between Jake and the other woman as they began moving away from the settlement. She saw guards waving at them and some of the other workers clearing away brush from near the walls. She waved back and kept her pace, not wanting to slow down the trio as they made their way through the easiest part of their trip. She knew the city would be difficult, but she trusted the two travelers to guide them through safely.
"Wait, hold on it's one of them."
She pointed out into the nearby treeline, and saw a staggering figure starting to emerge. A lone infected.

It wasn't near anyone but them, perfect. "I guess this is as good a time as any." Katya said, going over to Polly. She called out to the zed, bringing its attention on them, making it shuffle towards them.
She looked at Polly, "I want to see you kill it."

"Put me on the spot then? Well, prepare to be impressed. I've been watching the training you've been putting together, I think I got this."
Polly took out the crowbar she had been given the first day they met, and gave the woman a wink as she waited for the zombie to come to them, instead of rushing towards it like she had seen so many overeager people do in the past. As it got within a few feet of her she raised the sharp end of the prybar and jammed it into the zombie's right eye, watching it spasm and fall over as it's brain was destroyed.
She took a step back, making sure the zombie had joined the very dead before turning to smile at the woman.
"See, waited for it to come to me, was prepared, took it down in one hit, didn't cover myself in its blood. I do good?"

"I was actually talking about using your pistol, but I'll let it slide. Good work!"
Katya smiled at polly beaming at her praise, and Jake chuckled at the spectacle. "Well at least she knows not to go charging off." he said, turning back to the path. they all went on their way, Jake in front, Katya at the back and polly in the middle.
they made a good pace, Katya had been very ... thorough with Polly's physical reconditioning so she could easily keep up with the 2 experienced travellers.

Polly wasn't sure if she should have used her pistol or not. It would have made a lot of noise, and if there had been other infected it would have drawn them straight at their position. Also, it was only the one, and it felt good to take it out. It was so rotted she didn't even bother to search it. There was nothing on it that would have been useful anyways.
"So how far are we planning on going today? We are stopping around nightfall right?"

"we're gonna set up camp just before dark, and pack up just before first light."
and they did. they continued their way through the dead world, stopping each sundown to eat, drink, do the necessities and sleep, each person doing watches.
The trip was mostly peaceful, with the occasional zed popping up, nothing too strenuous.
that ended about 12 days into the trip.

"That is a lot of zombies."
Polly felt stupid saying the obvious, but as they crouched behind the crumbling wall separating the road from a private farm, she couldn't think of anything else other than the large herd of what appeared to be hundreds of walking corpses blocking their path. So far they hadn't been noticed, but soon enough one of them would wander too close to where they were and find them. It only took one to notice and then they'd be surrounded and torn apart.
"Do we backtrack? Find another way? If they see us we're dead."

"we back off and go around." katya said, cursing silently. It was a big horde, definitely way too much for the three of them to handle on their own. at least with the amount of ammunition, weapons and coverage of armor that they had with them. if they all had semi-auto rifles with large magazines, full coverage hazmat and riot gear and plenty of ammunition, then maybe, but they didn't, and katya wouldn't do it anyway. too risky.
they backed off about a kilometre and circled around. they were almost clear when life shat on them. there was a slight click, and Jake froze, his eyes wide.
"Oh f**k." he said softly, "Katya, I think I just stepped on a mine."
Katya carefully went over to him, and taking her knife, gently prodded the earth around his foot. there definitely was a mine. f**k.
"...s***..." she looked around carefully, and behind some grass and moss, there was a sign on the ground with the words 'danger minefield'.
"...well, s***."

"Okay, we walked into a mine field. We've got to walk back out of here, and fast, before -"
Polly didn't finish whispering her thoughts before a loud boom was heard in the distance. One of the zombies must have tripped a mine, and been blown to pieces. If they were lucky, that meant the rest would be drawn off by the sound, and possibly a few more taken out by the explosions as well. She didn't doubt for a second that the others would find mines to blow up as well.
"So what do we do? Do you know how to diffuse it?"

"no, I can't get a look at it, so the best option is to try and trick it, and quick cause it might be on a timer."
she looked around, quickly coming up with a sizable rock, and started untying jakes shoelaces. "okay, polly, please come here. step in the same places that he did."
while polly was coming closer, she finished untying the shoe, keeping the long lace attached to the boot through one of the lace holes.
"okay, polly, stabalise him while he gets his foot out of the boot. I'll hold the boot down."
it was a slow and ever so painfull process, but eventually, jake was out of his boot and several meters away, lying prone with polly. katya was lying prone a meter from the boot which now was squished somewhat by the heavy rock, and was about to tug the boot away from the mine.
"okay, here goes nothing." she pulled on the lace hard, and the mine detonated.
as the dust cleared katya coughed, alive and well, if feeling a bit like jelly. considering she was right next to an explosion she was glad the shockwaves hadn't ruptured anything vital inside of her.
