Katya sighed theatricaly,"Fine pet, but this will be resumed back at the house."

"I hope so."
Polly gave Katya a shy, but reassuring smile and then a quick kiss on the lips, much to the joy of the now crowded bar. Wherever they went, it seemed they were destined to make a lasting impression on the locals. This time at least there weren't any bodies to step over on their way out. For that she was exceptionally grateful.
"Remind me after dinner to see if we can get a signal to home. It would be nice to let them know we made it here safe."

"sure. we can see if the signal booster we installed will reach this far at the same time. Good thing this place has its own booster.
A few days before they had left, katya and some of the settlements engineers, tinkerers and scavangers managed to build and install a signal booster into the settlements radio tower, enabling scavenger and roaving patrol groups to stay in contact, report findings and radio for aid if needed. one of katya's MANY "suggestions", she had been astounded that they hadnt done it years back.

"Come on. After we eat we can talk a nice slow walk to the tower. See if anyone is home, and make a call. I'm hoping it will reach them. I'd like to know how everyone is doing."
Polly squirmed in Katya's lap like an impatient child, eager to be on their way to the tower. After such a wonderful meal she would need to take a walk to let it settle. Taking care of business at the same time was beneficial and efficient. Just like she knew the warrior woman liked it.

Smiling, they all finished their meal before heading out. It was in the highest part of the settlement, an old 10 story hotel being built just before the outbreak. It was meant to bring in business, capitalise on the closeness of the city while still being close to the forest. Instead the outbreak happened just before they started making the place look nice.
What was left was ugly concrete, air conditioning, water systems, power and backup generators. And a radio tower on the roof.

"I wish our settlement had been more prepared before the outbreak, before the world ended."
Polly wrapped one arm around Katya's waist, her eyes taking in the hotel. She wondered what it would have looked like finished. What kind of people would have come here, stayed here and enjoyed the forest as well as the city. It saddened and excited her at the same time, imagining what life would have been like if the world hadn't destroyed itself.
"Come on, let's see if we can reach them."

Going up via the lift, they reached the roof quickly, coming to the large radio tower.
Saying hi to the technition, they got on the radio and turned to the pre-determined frequency.

Polly recoiled a little when the static gave way to a high-pitched whine, and then back to the gentle crackle of an open radio channel. Taking the headset and the microphone, she clicked the transmit button down with her finger and spoke.
"Settlement control, this is Polly. Can you hear me on this frequency? Transmitting from Katya's settlement. Do you copy?"

After a short pause, there was a reply. "This is settlement control, good to here you made it. What is your status over."

Polly let out a shaky breath, glad to hear the voice responding. She had almost feared that there would be no response. That either the tower wasn't manned, or that something had happened.
"Alive and in good spirits. Glad to hear a familiar voice. Checking on status of corn reserves, over."

"Reserves are full. Reason for inquiry?"

"Possible trade opportunity. Coffee, some sweets. Can you confirm with the council, over."
Polly looked at Katya and gave her a winning smile. Imagine bringing something like that home! They would be her hero of the day.

"That might actually be a problem. The majority of the council, the ones that katya ****ed off are actually saying not to let you guys back in. Everyone else is hopping mad at them but they wont budge. Youll have to stay there till it gets sorted, over."
Katya chuckled. "Cowards. They waited till now to do it. How long did they wait? Over."
"Three days, over."

"No. When we have concluded our business here we will be back on the roads to the settlement. They want to keeps us from our home? Tell them they will have to kill us. Let us see their decision stand when we are in front of the gates. Polly out."
She hung up the receiver, and then looked back at Katya, an angry yet confident look on her face. She was feeling enraged but at the same time she knew it was exactly what her warrior woman would have done, and she was glad to show the backbone and conviction to do the same.

Wrapping her in her arms, katya kissed Polly's forehead. "Well done pet."
