Polly just nodded as the woman spoke, feeling a blush of embarrassment come to her cheeks and neck. Katya was right, what she had done was stupid, and if they were in a more dangerous area, she would have been in serious trouble. She didn't like being talked to like a child, but the woman was offering her advice that could very well save her life. While they were out in the dangerous zombie infested wilds, she had to know and rely on Polly to not do anything stupid. That meant pulling her own weight, and using her head. So far she hadn't done either.
"You're right. I'm sorry. That was foolish. I'll use my head more, I promise."

"Travelling with me will be an eye opener. I will be critiquing you, this will be as much a learning experience as a journey back home."
Katya dropped the club and went over to the girl, taking her arm, she checked her wrist. "thankfully there isn't any further damage, you got lucky." Katya's hands lingered for a bit before she got back in control of her emotions, letting go and turning towards their destination. "come on, we got a few more hours to burn."

Polly just nodded, trying to catch her breath between the pain in her wrist and the butterflies in her stomach. She swallowed down what she was feeling and picked up her things, considering taking the golf club as well. While it took the rotting zombie's head clean off, she wasn't certain that it would have the same effect on the more intact ones. She decided to leave it, following after the woman. She didn't know how much farther she had to go, but she imagined it was going to be a while before they stopped. She was glad she had comfortable boots on, she was going to be doing a lot of walking.

An hour later the sun was rising, and while the sunrise was beautiful, it showed a massive stormcloud heading their way. "dammit, its going to hit us., we need to find shelter."=

Polly has been watching the sky, knowing they weren't going to be able to avoid the oncoming storm, and it looked to be a bad one. She had learned over the many seasons working the farm how to read the weather patterns. Whatever shelter they found would need to be sturdy, or the winds and heavy rain would make it collapse.
"We need to find a building with think walls and a good roof. The rain is going to be heavy, and the winds already beginning to pick up. Do you know of a place like that around here?"

Katya looked at her in disbelief, "I'm from down south of here, im NOT a local." Katya quickly looked around, nothing. "nothing for it but to push on, hope we find something that will work."
they kept on for an hour before they found something.
"look, a shipping container!" it was on the road next to an upturned truck, but thankfully the container was the right side up. they rushed to it, wind howling and the rain pouring hard. the storm hadn't even reached its peak and they were already soaked and freezing.
it was simply to unlock the container, not so simple to open it. it was rusted and wasn't being easy.
"GOD-DAMNED MOTHER-f**kING STUPID THING OPEN!!!"
it opened after that.
the container stored boxes and boxes of non-perishables and first aid materials, most of which was still usable. Jackpot! if polly's compound had a transport of some kind.

Polly rushed inside once she saw that it was unoccupied, and helped Katya close the doors as best she could with one good hand. She couldn't stop from shivering, and found herself in the near darkness with the woman, the only sound the howling wind and water hitting the roof of their shelter. She took a quick look at some of the items before sitting on one of the boxes, taking her boots off and starting to strip. She could lay her clothes out, and they would hopefully be dry by the time they started their trip again.
"I don't know much about surviving outside of the community, but I do know wet cold clothes can make you sick in a big hurry."

"yeah, better strip fast." Katya said, putting her words to action.
they both quickly stripped, katya layed her clothes on the ground, and moved over to one of the broken boxes, which contained what looked like fur rugs. quickly drying off with one, she turned to polly. "here, dry off with this." she said as she tossed her the rug before bringing out several more rugs.

She took the shaggy looking rug and began trying to dry herself. Even in the relatively dry container she was shivering, and held her hand out for some more of the rugs.
"Pass me a few. We can make a bed out of them, maybe warm up a little while we wait for the clothes to dry."
Polly didn't know what she had done, but the woman didn't seem half as interested in her as before. Maybe she hadn't done anything, and the woman was simply done after she had spent the night with her, had taken her...No, she wanted answers. She deserved at least that much.
"Did I do something wrong? Earlier you would have been all over me, and now you won't even make a comment or look in my direction. Did I do something? Something bad?"

Katya was shocked. she knew she looked shock but couldn't school her features. polly was angry and sad and it showed, in her voice and her face. "NO!" she blurted out, unable to control the outburst. before looking away, unable to control the lance of sudden pain in her chest. She breathed heavily, leaning against the container wall, trying to calm down.
"no." she repeated more firmly. "you didn't do anything polly. it has nothing to do with you."

Polly gave the woman her space, and instead went to the box and began getting out the rugs, placing them down until they made a large enough layer for both of them to be able to lay down comfortably. She didn't want to force the issue, but she gave the woman her space and let her think through what to say next. If it wasn't something she did, was it something Katya regretted? No, she got it. She'd heard the stories enough times, seen the faces of people to know what her look meant.
"You lost someone right? Someone close. Is that why you're keeping away from me now?"

Katya stiffened, this was not a subject she liked. she hadn't told anyone, never said a word, never hinted. She didn't want the wounds to become worse. "I'll warn you once. do not speak on this subject again."
she went over to the rug box and got out more rugs to make a separate bet near the container door. "get some rest, I want to make more distance tomorrow than today."
she went under the first rug, and after awhile she went to sleep. went to the nightmares.

Polly didn't say anything else, more for fear of upsetting her more than the idea that perhaps Katya might get physically violent if she continued down that road. She figured whoever she had lost, it had affected her deeply. Perhaps it was even recent. Regardless of what had happened, she decided she wasn't going to press the issue, and instead took a few of the rugs and wrapped herself up the best she could, trying to drive the chill from her body.
She wasn't sure how much time had passed, but she found herself wakened by panicked sounds coming from the other part of the container. Her eyes quickly adjusted to the dark, and she crawled on her hands and knees until she reached Katya, still asleep and suffering through some sort of nightmare. She was calling out to someone, and swinging her arms like she was in a fight. She settled next to the woman, and pressed herself against her, murmuring calming words and gently rocking her, trying to calm her down before she hurt herself, or drew the attention of anything that may be stalking the night for a meal.
"It's alright, it's okay Katya. I'm here, I'm here..."

Katya slowly woke from the nightmare, it was worse than it had been for the last few years, to find herself in polly's arms, the girl comforting her. she couldn't stop the tears from coming, the feeling of constriction in her throat, the feeling of pressure behind her eyes and the deep ache in her chest. she had held the pain in for so long, it was like a damn bursting. she didn't make a sound as she cried, held in polly's arms, but she couldn't help but hold onto polly, like she was a rock in the tidal wave of emotions that ran through her.

Polly once had to comfort a young child like this. The girl had been part of a group trying to make their way to another settlement and had been attacked by the infected in the area. Only the girl and a few others made it out safely, and she took it upon herself to comfort her as much as she could. She was using similar methods with Katya now, simply letting her work through the feelings of grief and loss she was feeling.
"It's alright, let it out. I'm here, I promise I won't go anywhere. Just let it out."
Whatever the woman had been going through, it was clear the dam had burst, and she was crying for someone else, more than likely for the first time in a long time. She would be here for her, help her in what small ways she could.
