It had been 20 years since the outbreak. Los Angeles was overgrown now that the world had taken itself back. The infected still controlled the major cities all over the world. The government had established a few safe zones. They walled in sections of city to keep the infected out. Routine checks made sure no one was infected within the city walls.
Phil listened to the New Years partying. Basically everyone's birthday at this point. Luckily for the survivors, the remains of the government and military kept track of what day it was. "Happy birthday to me." He said into his glass of alcohol. Lucky for him, someone within the safe zone knew how to brew something to get him drunk. "I hate getting older." He muttered. He was on watch for the group scheduled to return, but with smugglers, they hardly showed up on time.
He rechecked his revolver for the twelfth time tonight. Still only six bullets. It wouldn't do anything except get him in trouble if soldiers came knocking. It did give him a sense of security if something unwanted came up through the tunnels. The world was still dangerous, no matter what the government or others would say. He knew that the infected were still out there. He knew it wasn't safe.
He kicked his feet up on the couch as he listened to all of the cheering slowly die out. Everyone had been gathered in the dinning hall to party. It resembled the dining area in prison or the military. Though, he was sure that some of the tables had been pushed to the side for dancing or other party shenanigans. He was just waiting for his relief so he could join the party.

Two Days Earlier
"Listen..." Crystal leaned against a thinner part of a foundation, seeing if their had been anything else on the other side. "Come on, sis, lets just go. The other pair have what we came out here for. You don't need to impress anyone by bringing back something. The hell with these people, anyway. You know why were doing this." Her brother, Thomas, went on. But still, she was listening. "Shut up and help me open this. The doors are still locked, even after decades. See?" She pointed to the rusted mastercraft locks. There couldn't have been touched in years.
Quickly as she started picking the lock, Thomas looked around to make sure it was clear, then listened to the inside of the building himself. Not a sound was heard, which was a good sign. Yet still, why nobody searched their place before was a mystery, and it left a pit in his stomach. It didn't stop his sister though. "Got it. Help me pull.", Crystal groaned, trying to pull the lock off herself. Thomas used the end of his rifle to pry it downwards, without making noise. And the rusty lock popped opened a few seconds later, letting the sheet metal doors swing open freely. Suddenly, an eruption of screams and bloody gurgling boomed from inside...
...
...Now
..........
Crystal slowly walked toward the entrance checkpoint, almost covered in blood. Nobody else was with her. She kept thinking to herself, there was no point in even going back, but she didn't know what to do now. Lights from the wall glowed from even a mile away, she was close, so all she did was keep walking, nearly collapsing from lack of sleep. But soon her lets stopped working, and she tripped to the ground, a piece of glass wanting to break her fall below her hand. Not caring, Crystal reached inside her jeans, and pulled out an emergency flare, pointing it up, and pulling the trigger.

Phil didn't think twice when the flare went off. He knew someone from the group was in trouble. He bolted down into the tunnel, banging on every wall as he made the corner. Once he was in the clearing, he sprinted toward where it came from. The burning stitch in his side from the running ached but didn't slow him down. He had to get to them before the soldiers did. It was going to be a close call too. He could already see them mobilizing when he looked over his shoulder.
Then he came across the one body. If he hadn't recognized her, he would have passed her. She looked dead at first. Or worse, infected. He looked her over quickly to make sure she really was alive before trying to help her.
"Crystal, what the f*ck?" He said as he tried to sling her arm over his shoulders. He held her up by her waste with one hand and held her hand at his shoulder with the other. As he started moving he saw the flashlights from the soldiers closing in on them. "F*ck." He muttered as he started trying to get away from the soldiers.

Well ill be damned... Lee thought to himself upon seeing the flare, and he took off in its direction fast as humanly possible. It had been a few days spent looking for the group when they got disconnected, and this was going to be his last night searching before returning back to camp. Knowing it was Crystal, being the one in the group with a flare, seemed only logical. She came in last, didnt know the areas well enough, needed it more than him. The problem was, the others in the group were all seemingly children in comparison to himself. But seeing as how they managed to get through the attack and get the flare up, Lee put a damper on the cynical thoughts, raising his gun once he seen the soldiers.
Crystal tried to hold herself up, but Phil definitely wasnt going to let go. There wasnt a whole lot of people she felt would actually try helping a newcomer to the group like herself, but thinking about it further, her and her brother had been here for a couple of months now. Then thoughts about her brother surfaced again, and she was reminded he wasnt alive anymore. Their plans to moving on came to a halt, and this was about pure survival.
The soldiers made things more complicated. They were predicted, but not this quickly. Thankfully, it wasnt quick enough, because Phil made it to her first. What happened next was a mystery to her, but Crystal just tried to stay awake, and not go under. Gunshots that rang out not far from where she shot the flare sprung her awake, they were fired in rapid succession, but only one set of shots. It was a delirious thought process, be she was sure it was him. She was sure it was her brother. "Tommy, its him. Stop. We cant leave him."

Phil didn't stop when she told him too. He didn't know who was shooting but it wasn't going to help if he stayed and found out. She was slowing him down and struggling to go toward the shooting. He wouldn't let her, so he picked her up over his shoulder and started to go faster. She wasn't heavy so he made easy work of it. His aim was to disappear into the surrounding city until it was clear to return. He had to get help first though.
He knew the smugglers kept radios stashed away outside the walls, just in case. He needed to get one, because she needed medical attention without drawing the wrong kind of attention. He also had to worry about the infected. There were just as much a threat as the soldiers were right now. The flare was sure to bring them their way.
Bear had been celebrating the holiday with everyone else. This wasn't the first settlement he had been a part of, but it was one of the firsts that were government run. He also could give a sh*t about this place. He had made friends here but nothing like the last place he had been with. When the flare went off, his attitude changed. He couldn't exactly leave without a distraction. He would be noticed and that would bring additional problems. Though he was going to have to help the smugglers. That's how he got paid.

Though the gas mask wasnt necessary, it was the only way to hide his identity from the other soldiers when they found him. There were only two others left, and they quickly moved on, calling Lee to come with them. He was dressed in uniform like them, and they wouldnt be any wiser until they found the body, but that wasnt important right now. What was important was finding where the two had run off. The soldiers seemed to know, and the direction made sense, so Lee followed suit, holding an old M16 they carried. It certainly took him back.
Crystal just stayed still, knowing there wasnt anything she could do. Maybe he was still alive, maybe he wasnt, there would be no way of knowing. The man carrying him definitely had done this before, and Crystal wasnt too uncomfortable. Soon as they got to safety, she felt confident enough to move on her own. Which seemed to come a lot quicker than expected, because they had definitely put more than enough distance between them and the soldiers by now, because they were in the city. "The blood isnt mine... Not really. I can walk now. I think."

Phil set her down as he examined their surroundings. He needed to get to the safe room to radio for help. The infected were already on the move with the flare and gunshots drawing them out. Still having only six shots in his revolver limited any sort of damage he could do to the herd that was forming. He was guiding Crystal along as he tried to remain out of sight of the infected.
Bear finished his drink, trying to look inconspicuous. It was hard for the big, tall, tattoo covered guy. With the guards looking anxious, he knew something bad was happening. He headed for the door, but as he approached, the guards stiffened up and readied to intercept him. He kept his pace and grabbed another bottle of booze before being stopped. "Where are you headed, sir?" Asked one of the soldiers on guard duty.
The kid was a lot younger than Bear, definitely born after the outbreak. Bear decided no to cause a fuss to lower suspicions and the soldiers' guard. "I got a couple ladies wantin' me back home. If ya catch my drift." He said while making an obscene gesture with a finger and a circle made from his index finger and thumb. He gave the kid a wink but was stopped with a hand on his shoulder.
The hand belonged to an older soldier, born before the outbreak but probably wasn't even in school yet when it started. "You can't take the alcohol out of the area, sir." The kid said with some attitude in his voice. At this point, everyone who knew Bear had turned to watch. Bear acted unexpectedly by their standards, and placed the bottle down on the table next to them. "Take a drink." He said as he forced his way past them, this time not stopping to their resistance.
