Thin layers of ice would have normally made it unbearable to drive, especially such a large truck, but it was handling it well enough. The worst was over, and it only got easier from here on. Not easy, just easier. There was still a lot going on, a lot nobody knew about, and even more they werent prepared for. Taking the highways seemed like the safest idea, the group swore by it, aside from when they had to move vehicles. Luckily, there were all too many in the roads where they traveled, making it all that much easier. All of that mixed with their fuel supply staying viable, travel came almost too easy. What was frozen, thawed, but most wasnt. Nobody ever touched the diesel, not these days at least.
Eva could hear the chains on the tires clank every now and then behind her, as she rest up on a materess, actually managing to keep her eyes closed without fear of somebody trying anything. Logan occasionally looked at her, and she caught onto this, but couldnt tell if he was doing it because she was the first female hed seen in months, or if he had this sense of urgency to make sure she was safe. Jesse and Edward were near the front, still talking about the book. Being an author couldnt have been too easy, especially when nobody will even buy any copies, but what they seemed to talk about was something people might want to hear years from now. It was peaceful, comfortable, and almost like a mobile apartment.
Mike at the wheel would look back every now and then, checking his rear view, paranoid that somebody was following them. It was the only issue driving an eighteen wheeler fitted with the makings of a house in the cargo load. Everyone and their dog wanted to scavenge them when theyre parked, but one moving was even better. It meant people, and that meant more supplies than what would even be in the back of a truck. Not exactly knowing all of the people back there made him worry, too. Jesse and Edward seemed alright, hed been traveling with them for awhile now. Eva came on not too long ago with Logan, and she was definitely harmless, being just shy of twenty years old, but her friend didnt look the type to play nice. Eva was the only reason they got picked up. Mike couldnt drive past, not her, it wasnt in his good nature.
As the truck came to a stop, Edward the first one to the back, reaching for the shutter door. Realizing once again they werent locked inside made him more confident that Mike was starting to trust Logan. Landing onto the ground, most of the patches of ice had been melted, putting his well maintained boots to good use. He didnt even bother looking around, knowing Mike wouldnt have stopped if the place was overrun, so he just helped the others out. Jesse and Eva both gave him a look of thanks, but Logan jumped out on his own, assault rifle in both his hands. "Ill keep watch..." he said, trailing off down the highway some distance away from everyone else.
