Date: September 27, 1998
The day started out as any normal day...for as much as anyone could tell. In the morning, people woke up and went to school or work and spent their entire day doing what they would normally do. If anything was out of place or weird, nobody said or thought anything about it. Nothing was reported on the television or on the newspaper.
It wasn't until later that day when an attack happened, but nobody seemed to notice anything about it. It happened far away from anyone and to a man that nobody ever saw. In fact, by the time he was found, he was already dead and rushed to the nearby morgue. This was the start of the zombie attacks against Raccoon City.
Date: September 28, 1998
When the morning came, a few attacks had happened, but not a lot of people noticed anything. It wasn't until later on in the day when more people were attacked and reanimated that people finally took notice.
By the afternoon, the town had been overrun. The streets were covered with blood, trash, dogs, zombies, and monsters. The dogs, zombies, and monsters did not discriminate against anything walking around the town that was living. It was all flesh to them and flesh was food for them.
Some people had hidden in little nooks and crannies to hide themselves from the monsters that ate friends and family members, but there was one person that did not have that luxury. By staying quiet and hiding inside buildings, inside the dark, and relying on luck, one body managed to stay alive. It was a body of over six feet tall and muscular. When it stepped into the light, it was clear that it was a very tall teenage girl who went by the name of Ellen.
It had only been a half an hour since the meat shop was closed for the day. In that whole time, she had been avoiding monsters and those dying from monster bites. The bottom of her shoes were stained with blood and she still had another twenty minutes just to make it home...and that was if she had no problems with those running around.
Suddenly, Ellen heard a sound. She quickly backed around the corner, hoping that whatever it was didn't want to kill her. Unfortunately, her foot hit a can and the sound of the can rolling down the alley echoed into the street.

Miroslav was in the city for his company Umbrella. Nobody had any idea about the responsibile of this disaster. But it was Umbrella. If anybody heard about that they probably woould never believe it. Umbrella has a great reputation all over the world. But they were the responsible after all. Umbrella ordered it's men to collect samples from it's B.O.WS. Miroslav's duty was a little different from the mercenaries or other personnel. He was a fully trained special forces instructor and a brilliant scientist who worked at the NEMESIS project as it's chief researcher. Captain Miroslav Antic was Sergei Vladimir's student. He was definitely the biggest hope of the company after that failure called Birkin and one of the few people who saw Lord Spencer face to face. He has send by Sergei Vladimir to Raccoon City under the direct orders of Lord Spencer. His duty was a secret but it would be revealed very soon.
The streets of Raccoon City were like a battlefield that day. Mutagenic serpents, bloodthirsty zombies and other monsters were walking around the city. Escaping people created a chaos in the city. A civilian chopper landed on a silent place. Antic got off from that chopper. After leaving the chopper he started to walking around. His equipments were ready against that unexpected chaos as always. Miroslav was checking the streets to detect any survivor. After hearing Ellen's roll he decided to look at that place to see what was that.

Ellen immediately froze after the can started rolling. She barely touched it, yet it seemed like it was rolling forever. When the noise stopped, she heard the sound of footsteps walking down the alley. She listened carefully.
They sounded nothing like the creatures that were taking over the city. The steps weren't slow and heavy, but faster and lighter. Whoever was making those noises was most definitely alive, though probably not much of a threat...and they were heading her direction.
Ellen knelt down and poked her head around the corner in order to make herself look shorter than she actually was. She was unsure of how the person would react if he or she noticed her but perhaps if she looked smaller, the person wouldn't be intimidated by her size. The peek lasted only ten seconds before she heard a clicking sound from behind her. When that sound came, she quickly brought her head back and slowly stood up with her back against the building. She couldn't see what was making the clicking sound, but it was coming closer and from what she could tell, the man from around the corner could help her if it was something that could hurt her...or he could laugh at her if the sound was all in her head.
Well, one way to find out.
The giant cautiously stepped around the corner completely unarmed and silent, waiting for the man around to corner to say something to or do something to her.

Antic knew that a possibly citizen was hiding there. He raised his voice and called for that person. Because he had no time to play.
'' Hey ! I know you are here ! You better get out of there before too late. You can't make it alone ! I am not a zombie. You can get out. ''
Antic was approaching the survivor slowly. He was knowing about the origin of this disaster but of course he would not say anything to the citizens about it. When he saw the girl surprised. Because he never thought that she has a chance. He puts his gun down and offer his hand.
'' Hello lady. I am Captain David Johnson. A soldier who send by the officials to see the situation. Are you hurt ? What is your name anyway ? ''
Dr.Antic was hiding his real id of course. He was a fully trained special forces instructor and a brilliant scientist send by Umbrella Corporation but he didn't say a single word about it because he couldn't take the risk of detection. Despite his Slavic origin his accent was perfect. Discovering his trick was not possible via his accent. Miroslav waited for Ellen's reply. While Antic was waiting, he watched the ambiance at the same time to destroy any possible threats...

Once Ellen stepped back out into the open and got a good look at the man. He was tall, a few inches shorter than she was. He seemed nice enough to her, but she had a feeling that his name was fake. It was time to return the favor.
"My name is..." she paused for a moment. What name should I use? Lucy...Diana...Soo-Ki...Ruth... It made no point in changing her name, "...Ellen."
It seemed nice that he was offering the gun, but with her own weapon, she really didn't want to take it. "Thank you for the offer, but I have my own method of weaponry." She put down her duffel bag and pulled out her compact bow and two arrows. The hissing sound stopped for a moment, but she still did not relax. With her weapon ready, she placed the duffel bag back on her shoulder.
More hissing started followed by footsteps. The footsteps stopped behind Ellen and a voice shouted, "Oh, great. I look for help and I get the freak!"
Ellen turned around and stared at the head of a fellow senior at school, one of the many average sized students who bullied her due to her size. He didn't get a chance to say anything else. Roughly five seconds later, his head lay on the ground with the body falling where it once stood.
Behind the body stood a creature similar to a skinned human with long claws. The tongue was unusually long and the face showed no mercy for what it had just done to a cruel yet innocent person.
"Oh my god..." Ellen whispered. She aimed her bow at the creature and fired an arrow. The arrow hit the creature in the chest. The creature fell back, but quickly jumped onto its four legs and prepared itself to strike...

Miroslav thought that why she waited for a while when she was saying her name.
'' Nice to meet you, uhm.. Ellen. Alright. ''
He puts his gun to his holster back. Miroslav heard about the footsteps and suddenly turned against his back to Ellen. He saw the monster but he wanted to leave her to kill it. So she could see that a bow was not enough to defend herself against those creatures. When the monster stood up Miroslav opened fire with his MP5 against it and killed the monster quickly.
'' See young lady ? Your bows are not good enough against those mutagenic serpents. I am sure you understood this very well now... Anyway, you should come with me or your presence in this world can be removed soon. ''

Ellen felt uncomfortable with being offered the handgun. She knew how to fire it, but something seemed off about it. However, she soon realized that her arrows were not something that would help in such close enclosures. It would help for later on though when she either ran out of bullets or if she needed to attack something from a distance. The arrows were a better backup than the knife she held in her bag.
"...thank you." Ellen took the gun after placing the arrows back in her bag, "but I think I will keep my arrows in case of an emergency."
Ellen kept an ear out and besides the sound of a soft breeze, there weren't any nearby sounds of the living dead. It was somewhat of a relief. It meant that nothing was attacking her but it also meant that something else could be lurking around, waiting to strike. It was for that reason alone that she didn't want to stay put for too much longer.
"So...where do we go?" Ellen asked shyly.

'' You are welcome ma'am. Of course you can do that. Your bows can be an extra help for you. Well, do you have parents and if you have them then where are they ? ''
Antic was looking around to detect any monster but he couldn't see any of them.
'' Well, i don't know yet. Your home must be dangerous and i don't think that condution will be fixed anytime soon. So you must find a shelter for yourself. For now i will look for a secure place. Would you like to come with me ? ''
He was an Umbrella agent. His orders were clear. He has no intention to help this little miss too much but her parents could be connected to any government official or police unit. So he had to learn of it.

"I have a family: parents and younger siblings. I think my siblings might be at school, but not so sure about my parents." Ellen didn't say much after that. Something in side told her that this guy didn't care at all if her family was alive or even if she was okay. It didn't surprise her; very few people cared about her. Still, she was going to stay with him for as long as she could. If something happened, she was willing to escape and find her own way home or out of this city.
Before she had a chance to agree, a rotting smell filled the air followed by clicking. Slowly, Ellen turned her head towards the sound and within her sight came a familiar face. It was a St. Bernard but covered in blood and missing globs of fur. A turquoise and pink collar hung from its neck but the name was unreadable. "Oh god...Buddy." she said out loud. The last time she saw him, he gave her a kiss when she visited Lesley's house. Now, he was staring at her and growling.
"Let's get out of here." Ellen commanded as she started to walk away from Buddy. Antic could kill him if he wanted, but she didn't want to tell one of her best friends that she was responsible for the death of her disabled brother's beloved dog.

'' If they are at school right now then they already dead. I heard that the local school is finished and fully infested with zombies and other mutants. I am sorry. ''
He said this coldly. He was not sorry after all but he had to say that to be kind. After completing his words he saw Ellen's reaction and turned his head too at the same time with Ellen.
'' Wait ! Who is this ''Buddy'' ? Do you know this dog ? ''
Antic loved animals and didn't like seeing this dog like this.
''We did not want to do that... ''
He turned his head and whispered loudly so Ellen could hear of his words. But he was not aware of that.

Ellen blinked when she heard him say that the local schools were infected and her siblings were probably dead. It was possible that they might be, but they also had after-school activities and Joan was going to a friend's house after school to play games. If Ellen survived high school without noticing any infected people until at least an hour into her shift, at least one of her siblings would be alive.
When Buddy came up, she noticed Antic's reaction. As they stood in the area, she decided to give a short explanation about the dog. "He belongs to my friend Jamie's little brother Conner. Buddy was given to Conner as a companion animal because he's mostly nonverbal and severely autistic. If Buddy turned into a monster, then hopefully Conner went quickly."
When Antic whispered something about not meaning for this to happen, that somewhat shocked her. "What do you mean 'we did not want to do that'? Were you planning on doing something to this city?"
Before he had a chance to answer, Buddy again growled and took a step towards her. He wasn't alone. Two other dogs joined him as well as a partially skinless tabby cat. Ellen did not know the names of the three new animals; chances are they were strays that got caught up in this mess. Ellen aimed her gun at one of the stray dogs, but didn't fire. Instead, she said in an uncharacteristic sharp voice, "We'll talk about it later. I'll let you call the shots, either we leave, or the animals will have to be taken out."

'' I will not shoot these animals. Let's go. ''
He said calmly. They run towards the office and Antic controlled it's door quickly. When he discovered it's unlocked door of the building entered into it suddenly and pulled Ellen inside too. Antic was heard of Buddy's story. A dog could upset him so easily but things were not the same for humans in his eyes. Humans were like parasites for him and easily be replaced. He gained a chance to talk when they escaped from the mutated animals.
'' I see. A service dog... Hmph... You Americans have very weird habits. I can't deny it. Whatever... And an advice for you. You do your own business little miss. Do not question me. Now, if you want to go to your parents i will not prevent you from this. If you want to keep going with me then you will shut your mouth and listen to my instructions. I have a powerful military training and useful methods to survive. You probably will be safe with me. Make your decision now, lady. And remember that you have not much time. ''

"'You Americans'? Where do you come from, anyway?" Ellen asked after the door closed. She didn't wait for an answer, mostly because she didn't really care where he was from. It mattered about as much as it mattered that she was originally from Las Vegas. Nobody cared where she came from because it didn't matter.
Instead, Ellen took the time to check out the office building. It looked like any normal office. There were a few chairs in front of a large counter, but the only thing that looked different was that whoever was last inside left in a hurry. Papers and other items were strewn around. Only a trace amount of blood was on the countertop and the floor and the phone was off the hook.
Before wandering around the back of the counter, Ellen paid attention to the rest of what Antic was saying. He didn't seem to want to help her find her family and she wasn't surprised about that. However, when he told her to be quiet and not ask any more questions, it bothered her. It wasn't what he said; the students at school hurled crueler insults at her quite often. What bothered her was the tone. She glared at him and wanted to snap back, but held her tongue. It wasn't in her nature to respond back. She had Lesley and her other friends to do that for her. "Fine. I'll stay with you."
Without saying another word, she stepped behind the counter and placed the phone to her ear. No dial tone. The computer was still on and had a few files open to profiles of multiple people. Only one of them she knew: Malcolm Jeffers, a neighbor. Why was his profile opened and why did nobody close it when they left? The hallway was relatively clean behind the counter. All but one of the doors were closed. There were no sounds coming from any doors, but from being outside, Ellen learned to pay attention. She stepped at the front of the hallway and leaned her ear into the area, listening carefully for any sounds.

''Good.
I am a Serb. Now let me check this area. Wait here for me. ''
Antic started walking slowly. An unpleasant surprise could be here. They should be ready for anything. He continued to walk and controlled the tables.
If Antic would want to escape this city then he could do it easily. He could make a request for a chopper and leave the city. But it was not possible for him right now. He has a duty here anyway. Controlling Umbrella faclities and if he sees any remaining S.T.A.R.S members who escaped from their famous mansion, hunting them. Antic has a very detailed scientific experience at this hellish mansion. This was his first place of duty in his lovely Umbrella family. He knew very well what's happened there and the tragedy of Trevors. And Miroslav has to complete his mission at the same time. He did not want to stop. For this purpose he called Ellen. Waiting in this small place would leads them to nowhere. There was a facility nearby but Ellen shouldn't know his connection with Umbrella. Their journey should be completely happenstance.
'' Hey Ellen listen to me. We have to find a big and secure place. Not like this shop. A place like this cannot protect us. You saw those things out there. We must find a big and secure place like a hospital, military base or a police station. Come with me. I need a city guide to find some place safe. Do you know where it is ?''
Of course he was knowing every corner of the city very well but Ellen shouldn't know about this. He has to play a dumb ex- military personnel who doesn't know the city. He would take her to ''Dead Factory'' or another facility in the end. He just has to play a tourist for a while nothing more.
'' Ellen, come on. We need to leave this place now.''
He wawed his hand towards her.

Ellen blinked, but didn't say anything at first when Antic revealed what his nationality was. She had never met a Serb. He also seemed to be acting as if she knew more than she should. It was absurd. She knew probably about as much as most other citizens of this city, but she didn't ask any questions. He didn't care about her mission in this city, so she didn't care about his...yet.
When the suggestions came for where they should be hiding out. She tried to think of her own suggestions. The high school gymnasium was most definitely out if as many students were infected as Antic had told her. The bank was safe, but only if they hid in the vaults and no help would come if they were stuck inside. The only really good ideas she had were the local mall and a huge home in the farmlands, near the mountains.
Ellen knew who lived in the home: The Grayson family. She had been there for a sleepover party back when she was thirteen for their daughter Morgan. Ellen hated Morgan...and her brother Henry...and her sister Megan...and their horrible little cousins who stayed there for the summer. She even hated the parents, but their home was built with huge barriers and was so far in the country that it took almost ten minutes for a normal person to walk to the nearest neighbor. The Grayson family were horrible people, but even they wouldn't turn away people in trouble.
"I would stay away from the hospital. All the bitten and attacked people would be going there. Same with the police station. I've only been to the base once, but I'm sure I remember where it is. I myself would probably to the mall...if the stores were closed. There is also the Grayson Estate down on Millerview Avenue. They got a huge house that could protect us, but unless we have a car, the distance is going to be about a two hour walk." Ellen said her two cents and walked into a nearby room. It was empty of any creatures, living or dead. It actually looked as if nobody had been in that room all day.
Ellen took a minute or two to do a quick search through the desks. She hated stealing, but she was desperate. After a minute of rummaging, she walked out of the room with some new items in her pockets and bag: a map of the city, three floppy disks, about $50, some energy bars, and a disposable camera with only three pictures taken. By the time she came back to Antic, she heard some soft yet sharp tapping at the top part of a window. A bird was waiting to get inside.
"Yes. Let's go."
