Callus was walking from his class when a transparent vortex anomaly pulled him in. After slipping in, he tripped over something and fell. He woke up in a forest, with a tree branch tangled between his legs, and a headache.

Callus inspects the area surrounding him. “Agghh. Jesus what happened?” he says while rubbing his sore head.

As you look around the land is dry yet the there are many clouds, it is slightly dark. You smell ozone and the university air where you once were, until a soft gust of wind breezes, replacing the air with the smell of the forest and dry woodland. Your electronics work but there is no signal, and battery is at 27% on phone. Your head feels light, but it’s not a headache. The land is hilly, and there are pine and oak trees, with tons of blackberry thickets, as well as other vines and plants.

Callus stands up, checks his person for his wallet, phone and keys. After checking for his effects he gets up and looks for any identifiable landmarks or trails he might recognize, or any signs of the direction of civilization.

You got all your stuff. There is no sign of civilization or paths in the immediate area, it is just forest and random clearings with some tall grass in the clearings. There are dry oak leaves among the grass and under trees. Most trees are about 25 feet to 35 feet tall and are thin, but the pines range from saplings to 80 feet estimated tops. There are some branches and down trees from long ago weather. Some down pines are soft and moist, with roots growing through and around them. Your phone time says 19:40 if you look at it.

Reverting back to my military training, I begin looking at my terrain for a higher point or a tree that seems easy to climb. If I can obtain higher ground I can look around for some man made paths, clearings or signs of smoke or city lights in the distance.

Trees are mostly thin, and not many branches to climb. Most lower branches are weak. There is a small oak that looks easy to climb but it’s not high and is in the crack of a hill. Within the area you search there is not much to go by. The sky becomes slightly brighter.

I turn my phone off to conserve battery. I begin walking in the direction of west, toward the setting sun. Along my way I pick up any berries i recognize that aren’t poisonous. I walk for around 30 minutes in search of man made trails or land marks.

Berries are few, if any. The sky grows brighter, but the cloud coverage is dense, so you can’t tell where exactly the sun is, but you are walking toward the brighter part of the sky. You come across a stream, flowing from left to right. It’s a small stream, about a foot wide between edges of water contact, and it narrows and widens depending how deep it carves. It is noticeably brighter than before.

I travel along the stream for a hour, or as long as it takes to see a person, or find anything that looks man made. I search for smoke in the distance, old campsites, man made litter such as old food packages. Anything that can alert me to a human presence.

As you follow the stream you notice the sky get brighter. The stream eventually leads to a spring. You feel much deeper in the wilderness. There is a wild pear tree growing near the spring and it has a bunch of big pears, some are yellow but most are green. Every other step near the spring large frogs jump in. Smaller ones chirp as they jump in the water. You hear a distant vehicle to the rear, down stream, but it is so far that you know it may take a good half hour to reach where the sound is coming from. It was blueshift for a moment, then redshifted till it was out of sound range.

Hearing the vehicle, I gather a few pears for my pockets and head in the direction I heard the sound. I begin calling out. “HELLO?! IS ANYONE OUT THERE?! CAN YOU HEAR ME!?”

It’s so quiet out there you realize that the vehicle may have been over a mile away. As you move through the forest you realize it may be a waste to try and find it. You do feel a comfort at the spring, as if it’s very safe there. Your call outs are unheard as the vehicles would be too loud for anyone onboard to notice someone yelling from so far away. Your feel that your senses of sound became more sensitive during the quietness of the forest. There are no squirrels. Actually, you notice there aren’t that many birds chirping, if any were at all. You realize by how it’s getting brighter that it’s actually early morning. You hear the sound of another vehicle moments later, and it’s toward the darker side of the sky. It’s every though, no birds chirping. The sky begins to release a soft sprinkle.

I eat some of the pears and berries i’ve gathered. I keep some for later. From my military training i gather some water in my hands from the spring and if it doesn’t look murky, and has the appearance of freshwater i drink some. If it looks murky, i know the spring can either be one of two things. A freshwater stream spring or a runoff from possible civilization. Depending on the results of the water, if it is murky, i will head in the direction of where the runoff to the stream is coming.

The pears taste fine, you have about two berries and they taste sweet bitter, but are nice for what is there. The spring is very fresh and has healthy minnows and wildlife in it. The water is clear and taste of minerals. A hint of calcium from deep rock can be tasted, along with the sulfur and gasses from deep leaf and soot below. This is the actual source of the stream, thus there is no more up stream from here. It goes to higher hills. From a nearby clearing hills can be seen that are more like mountains. A distant helicopter can be heard. It sounds like it’s coming from where the vehicles in the distant were, toward where the darker parts of the sky were earlier. The sky has since become day, yet the clouds remain. Distant Thunder can be heard, and the threat of rain will soon obscure the sound of a potential distant highway.
