Woman Soldier: "He thinks he's still gonna have some." Her words are aimed indirectly at you but directed squarely at Sgt. Bo, a playful challenge that lingers in the air.
Sgt. Bo: "We don't know. We just picked up a few things from the market that looked kool." Bo addresses you with a knowing smile, then shifts his attention back to the simmering pot, seemingly amused by the situation. “I’m eager to try it.” He pauses. “I’ll tell you how it is, since you aren’t allowed some.” As the soldiers exchange playful remarks, the aroma of the soup fills the air, further enticing the senses and drawing everyone into the shared experience of this culinary adventure.

“Ahh you guys are no fun. Is there anything else around? I starving. Ya know it’s not easy being this good looking in a place like this. It’s like I have a target on my head from those ugly as sin evokers.”

Female Soldier: "Only the ugly can have a bite." She continues to stir the pot, her playful words leaving a teasing tone in the air. "If you want some, you have to be ugly. I'm the only exception," she adds with a soft, sincere smile, trying not to overexaggerate her jest.
Sgt. Bo: "There's a market, but you need something to trade with merchants." Bo interjects, his voice carrying a practical undertone.
Female Soldier: “It should be ready soon, though.”

“What do they care to trade? I haven’t seen any currency around. Just useful things? Or tools?”

Sgt. Bo: "I traded some fishing line I had in my survival gear and some hooks. I showed the guy how to use it with their bait and a long stick, and he traded me some of these things that look like mushrooms but smell like beets. Beetshrooms, I said when I smelled them." He holds up one of the peculiar fungi, a light gray mushroom with beet-red flesh and dark gray flaps under the cap. As he cuts one open to reveal the transition from red to dark gray, a sense of curiosity fills the kitchen. "Smells wild," Bo remarks, marveling at the unusual discovery.
Female Soldier: "I tested the make-up. It's safe." Her comment steers the conversation toward a different direction, a practical reminder of their diverse roles and tasks. Amidst the culinary experimentation and playful banter, the soldiers remain focused on their mission, their bond strengthened by shared experiences and trust.

Female Soldier: "It's done. Get your mess bowls." With a sense of accomplishment, she steps back from the pot, the air heavy with anticipation. Taking a moment to blow on a spoon in preparation for tasting, she warns, "Oh, it's hot." Sgt. Bo promptly retrieves his mess cup, ready to savor the flavorful creation. PFC. Jovani maintains his post at the door, diligently ensuring the security of their surroundings.

You mean, you didn’t pack one in your survival gear ? Hahahahahahahahaa !
Female Soldier: "Well, aren't you coming to get some ?" Her playful tone carries a hint of invitation, a silent reassurance that her previous remark was all in good fun. Despite the jesting, she genuinely wants everyone to partake in the culinary creation she's worked on with care. With her eyes fixed on you, she warmly encourages your participation, silently acknowledging that her comment may have momentarily made you feel left out. The kitchen becomes a space where camaraderie triumphs over any teasing, a place where bonds are strengthened through shared experiences and laughter. As she waits for your response, her smile conveys a genuine sense of inclusion, making it clear that your presence and enjoyment are equally valued among the company of soldiers.
Sgt. Bo: “Don’t make me be the guinea pig.” He shoots a word his way, jokingly poking fun of the unknown sensations of the food.

“Ah what the hell. I’ll be the guinea pig.” I grab my bowl from my pack and make myself a bowl. I eat it without hesitation because I haven’t eaten in quite some time.

Female Soldier: "Wohw-hungry?" Her playful inquiry carries a sense of curiosity, teasingly acknowledging the hunger that may have arisen from the tantalizing aroma of the broth. With her warm smile, she takes joy in how you savor the fruits of her culinary expertise.
As you tentatively take a spoonful of the soup, the taste reveals a delightful surprise. The broth washes over your palate, reminiscent of honey-infused carrot juice, yet with a touch of cayenne pepper-like spice that adds a subtle kick. The flavor, though unfamiliar, is a delightful adventure for your taste buds. The texture, milky and dry, has a quenching quality, leaving a refreshing aftertaste that lingers. The medley of salts and spices expertly mingled with the sweet spice nasal aroma, akin to cinnamon, creates a harmonious symphony of flavors, enveloping you in a culinary journey that awakens your senses.

“Ohohh. Very nice. We have a 5 star cook out here in the field with us when they could be at a world class restaurant. Hope you guys are grateful.” I say playfully to the soldiers.

Sgt. Bo: "Yep, feeling grateful, and they can't have her." He grins, savoring each mouthful of the delectable soup. "Ohh-yea, the seasonings and local veggies really shine. And that fungi, it's got that dryness I like. But you know what would make it even better ? Some meat." He strolls over to PFC. Jovani with a playful glint in his eyes.
Female Soldier: "I'm sorry, I don't eat meat." She winks, teasingly showcasing her dietary preferences. "But hey, you can add some to your own cup." She takes another bite, enjoying the delightful flavors of the soup. "I hope it's kosher." She looks at the cup of food, cautiously.
PFC. Jovani: "Thanks." He gratefully accepts the cup from Sgt. Bo's outstretched hand.
Sgt. Bo: "Don't mention it." Settling into a chair opposite Jovani, Sgt. Bo relishes his own cup of the savory dish. "Lieutenant Caston, I heard you rescued the last Nal'yus today. Is she okay ?" His demeanor shifts to a more serious tone, a reflection of his genuine concern for her. With an air of relaxation, he leans back in the chair, waiting for Caston's response as the kitchen buzzes with a shared sense of duty.

“To my knowledge she’s going to be fine. But she’s being taken to recover somewhere safe. She almost didn’t make it. I basically blacked out when performing all of the procedures she needed. I haven’t had much of a break since being back at Scar Creek. Come to think of it I jumped straight into SPOND right after I had just gotten out of another s*** show.” I take a deep breath and sigh. “A mother f**ker is tired ya know?” I chuckle a bit. “I know we ain’t supposed to smoke cigs and s*** but damn, nothing really hits like that first drag off a smooth menthol. Ah now I’m just ramblin.” I continue to eat my soup.
