You complete the surgery fine. You notice with significant confidence that the procedure was good enough to get back to moving. The captain smiles when he sees your self achievement on your face when you take that deep breath of accomplishment.
Captain Davis: “Is my liver still there or did you sell it to the organ donation center two trees back ?” He starts to crack up.

“I think you may have a drinking problem, some of that damage looked self inflicted.” I lightly slap his arm in jest and chuckle. “You’re good to move until we find a tavern then we might have to open you up again.” I begin to help him to his feet.

Captain Davis: “I was watching. You did good enough that it should heal the rest of the way on its own. The drones gel will deactivate as my natural cells replace the nano-drone materials. Cellular level s***.” He takes the tools you used to patch him up and places them in the cleaning bags and shakes them in the solution they come with, and packs them up. “You didn’t clean my instruments, haha.” He closes his pack and gets up. “If this was the early 2000’s I’d have died by now from blood loss. Probably soon after the injury. I’d probably have dropped from the pain of the hit too, because it was a vital organ. Without the bio-chemical make up supporting my adrenaline the pain I felt when I was stabbed would have dropped me.”
2nd Lt. Bardlaw: “That s*** is so kool to me.” He chimes in. “Like, I peeked a few times, and was thinking man, if this happened in 2003 Iraq, it would be a different show.”
2nd Lt. Kyla: “Good job Caston.” The captain puts his pack on and sips the last of his water. “Still, I’m thirsty. Next river or stream, I’m gonna purify and fill up.” He starts to walk to the other two. “Caston, you’re doing good covering the rear, I’ll take point. Hyla, keep the drone above and moving. We will head toward that next river.” He places a waypoint on the next river away, and highlights the tab on the HUD interface on which drone to observe from. “Movin out.” He walks toward the waypoint.

“Copy.” I take up rear security. “You know in my OG dimension, we didn’t get nearly to the level you guys got to on the same timeline. I can’t remember where someone told me it split but i’ll be honest, Cap wouldn’t have had a much better chance in 2022. We still relied on hemostatic bandages, tourniquets and gauze for the most part. My unit didn’t have a dedicated medic either. Hell I don’t think anyone but infantry or spec ops did. I didn’t get the chance to deploy before I was cutting up zombies in Raccoon City with a cop names Simmons.”

2nd Lt. Bardlaw: “Your from 2022 ?!” He gasps. “Our OGD is 2018 ! How the f**k don’t you guys have the s*** we have ?”
Captain Davis: “I bet it’s probably a long story of how there wasn’t a 2007-2008 North American civil war and the economy stagnated because nothings going on. What about how Ukraine and Russia beefing over there ? What comes out of that up to your last known time ? What about Tanzania and Uganda and their conflict ? And The Red Sea Brotherhood and their extremism take over in Yemen and how they blocked the Red Sea to French and Spanish shipping ? Or the Somali pirates beefing with the UK ? This is all going on in our dimension. Germans are also protesting the limits they have on their freedom of speech, about how the government policy is not sharing the full truth of the first and Second World War. Sorry, I wasn’t trying to get carried away, haha. But I use want to see how much different the world politics are compared to us on your side of the dimensional spectrum.”

“I’m not sure some of that existed. The Red Sea guys aren’t an issue globally from what I was involved in, which was a lot given my studies. Russia and Ukraine were actively filing it out, NATO backed Ukraine and Russia can’t keep up, but rather than cut their losses it’s been a foreign policy nightmare. North American Civil War hasn’t happened but honestly with division as bad as it was, I’m sure it would have hit a boiling point at some rate. Our world was ravaged by a corporatist society and not enough people to try to fix it. It seemed like we just ran into small conflict after small conflict. Pirates were beefing with everyone but they weren’t funded enough. At the point I left it wasn’t much going on like Captain said. Just a lot of crony capitalism and I was barely making it paycheck to paycheck.” I lower my head a bit. “I hope everyone is okay back home. I miss my girl, but hopefully me being gone like that didn’t hurt that bad.”

2nd Lt. Bardlaw: “Sounds like your world could use some GPEO influence, haha.”
2nd Lt. Hyla: “I think the North American civil war helped, but it has its own issues.”
Captain Davis: “Like a divided states of America.”
2nd Lt. Hyla: “Yep. But isn’t the fragmentation of the states more beneficial to the region now ? Texas, where I’m from, they selling oil like it’s the Middle East. Alaska is also producing lots of oil, and so is the UCFS.”
2nd Lt. Bardlaw: “Yes. But New York is a slum pool. Crime is at an all time high because we allowed the UCGS to falter. We’ve offered free housing and utility service. But they won’t let us, so we take in a lot of disadvantaged communities. Hyla, your last commander, for example.”
2nd Lt. Hyla: “Yea, she was stuck in the hood. No way out. Then the organization recruited her, put her through boot camp, motivated her, inspired her to fight for herself, and she went to college and became an officer. She doin good now. Her parents moved to florida, and they are out of the toxic life they was in.”
Captain Davis: “We could take the New England states and help them if we wanted to. We always have air and space superiority. Cyber superiority because we just take over the cyber terminals outright. But, we don’t want to risk collateral damage like last time there were engagements over Connecticut and New York.” I can’t imagine what would happen to a residential building if a C-17 crashed into it from being shot down.”
2nd Lt. Bardlaw: “Sheesh, they hit houses and convenience stores.”
Y’all walk about two hours.

“So Captain, what do you think our best bet is to figure the situation out? Just so I have the run down.”

Captain Davis: “Our mission is to secure the family and bring them back home. That’s it. The s*** that happened with us being pulled here, that’s a hiccup that has my concern. Our immediate mission is to maintain security of the family and to figure out how to get back. I’m just, honestly, trying to confirm this is Bedtagon, so we can contact our friends here and see if they can contact our guys to bring us back. Our D-Vice may have to be matched with another at home before we can use it again. I think if we go anywhere it’ll take us to an unknown place, far from any planetary mass. We’d probably end up just in space somewhere.” He takes a deep breath. “So recap. Secure family. Find out if this is Bedtagon. Contact friends. Get link to home. Bring family back. That’s the simple version. How we get there, we may have many obstacles. Does this answer your question ?”

“Crystal clear. Let’s hope these locals are around and friendly. To my knowledge they speak in a language-well at least the one that’s spoken to me before-in a broken English that has a thick Eastern European like accent. Here’s hoping.” I cross my fingers. “Apparently the lady that contacted me alongside our evil friends thinks me or I’m assuming our group. or SPOND is the key to alleviating their suffering and the multiverse as well.”

Captain Davis: “Well, we'll see. You said English with Eastern European accent ?”

“Somewhat. It was very broken English. The accent was hard to place but that’s what it sounded like. Maybe even some old English type word usage as well. I can’t remember off the top of my head but that’s what I do remember. Not sure if it’s indicative to the plane as a whole though I’m sure it’s not.”

Captain Davis: “I don’t remember English as one of the languages on the report. If this is the place, we have a training detail in some of the regions. We will find someone. But broken English, that’s a red flag. None of the locals, aside from the dimensionals have the ability to language tap. Dimensionals, as in the enemy hand waving f**kers, the local Rain Wolves, the Nal’yus, which are what we call dragons, and the enemy king, who, is a dragon of some sort. The average humans won’t know English, so it’s going to be a toss up. And, I hope it’s not the enemy ruler, because he’s sly.” You reach a location that looks like a foot path. “Cross over it. Minimal tracks. We don’t want to follow the locals trails. Waypoint is best.” Everyone ignores the foot path as they cross it. You are last to cross.

I cross and leave no tracks. I ponder in my head why would the person that reached out to me speak some English but they have no reports of it here? Can I do an intel to remember what she looked like?
