The air was still once the monstrosity was put to rest, only heavy breathing from the two victims was heard, despite all the sorrowful moaning outside. Within these few tense moments, a thud resounded through the department store- the sound of a paint can smacking to the ground in the distance. Heavy footsteps pounded the floor repeatedly and gained speed as whatever is was that knocked the paint can down ran towards the two occupants. Once the footsteps stopped, a low snarl was heard as the creature leaped in the air, skidding to a halt between Katherine and Shane. It first turned to Shane, it's mouth slowly opening, saliva sliding off of it's gnarled teeth and it's sharp claws being drug across the tile flooring, making a nail-biting screech. With it's tough exterior and it's agility, the monster had no clear weak spots to exploit- unlike it's brethren lying on the floor twitching behind it. This creature was unknown to many because of it's purely selective prey, which is why Umbrella had named it the Hunter Alpha. Within feet of Shane, it charged towards him, lifting it's massive right claw.[/b][/color]

Shane's vision slowly came back after his time to recover from the choking delivered by the licker. He felt his arms and legs, as well as his torso. No bruises, no broken bones, luckily the glass had not hurt him over much, but had knocked the air out of him. Still, his neck hurt, and his back was sore, but he could move fine. He opened his eyes just in time to see Katherine slam a piece of concrete down onto the licker's head, smashing its brain. He wanted to laugh, but it would take a moment before he had enough air to speak. He gulped in lungful after lungful of air, slowly rejuvenating his body. He cast around, noticing his bat lying about a foot away. Maybe they would be alright after all. Or not. At that moment something, bigger and obviously more dangerous, slid in between them, snarling and salivating as it turned its sightless gaze on him. Damn it! I have reallly bad luck. It lunged, swiping at him with its enormous right claw. Shane rolled to the side, snatching up his bat all in one motion. The claw slammed down on his former position, smashing through the window where he had lain a moment before. He rose, swinging as hard as he could down on the creature, who howled in pain from glass shards that had pierced its hand. It thudded down onto its head with great force, snapping the bat cleanly in two. Surely that would at least stun the creature. Ah man!! Not waiting to see what the blow had done, he scrambled over to Katherine, who stood in shock. "Come on Katherine we've gotta go! Right now come on!" He took her by the hand again, running for an emergency exit on the side of the room. As they ran he snatched up a sledgehammer that lay on the floor next to the slain woman, hefting it in his hands. Just before they reached the door, the creature's tongue, long and dripping with saliva wrapped around Shane's leg, dragging him back towards its gaping maw. No! Shane roughly maneuvered into a better position, slamming the hammer down onto the tongue. The tongue unraveled, the creature howling in pain. Shane removed the revolver from his hip pocket, firing a shot at the creature's foot, trying to trip it up. The bullet lept from the gun and flew high, slamming into the creature's knee. It crumpled for a moment, stumbling as it came after them. A large bruise now ringed Shane's leg and he limped out of the emergency exit with Katherine, slamming the door shut behind them.

Katherine wrapped an arm around Shane's shoulders and tried to help him carry himself since he was wounded. Fleeing as fast as they could, Katherine could hear the beast thrashing through the glass doors behind. She looked back, eyes wide with fear as she tried to move faster with Shane in her grip.
"It's gonna catch up!" she yelled, terrified. Just then a shot rang out, nailing the thing in it's side, forcing it to skid to a stop. Before either Shane or Katherine could react, another arm grabbed ahold of Shane and helped him move faster ahead.
"No time for explainations! Come on Kat!" the man yelled, holding his shotgun in one arm and Shane in the other. Katherine stared at the man awestruck before realizing he was missing an extra person...

Shane felt himself held up by Katherine for a time, at least until they were out of the building. Almost immediately after they made it out, he felt stronger arms holding him up, felt himself carried along almost like a rag doll. He looked up to see a man holding him up, a shotgun in his other hand as they moved out of the parking lot. He looked over to see that Katherine was no longer, but running along beside them, a shocked look on her face. He heard the man call her Kat, tell her that they had to go now. From the sound of his voice, and the instant response from Katherine, he could reason out who he was. The pain in his leg and his throat was intense from the tough time they'd been given, but he forced his brain to think through the pain, the obvious answer jumping into his head. "Oh," he said feebly, fighting to talk through the pain, "you must be her husb...." at that he stopped speaking, because he needed all his efforts to stay conscious.

Katherine continued running by their side, listening to Shane's attempts at speech. She and the man beside them both nodded a little. She couldn't really explain anything at this point in time. She had seen one ofthose thing down by the park a few nights before.
It had ripped through some that looked almost like itself, only smaller. These monsters weren't a force tobe reckoned with. The alpha hunter was still running after them, screeching loudly behind as it took the moment to leap high in the air, swiping at them. Luckily it barely missed the three by inches.
No matter how much she had liked to, she couldn't turn around to shoot at it. It was way too close to do that now.
The man kept his stern eyes forward as he spoke between breaths to his wife, "Kat, there's an alleyway coming up, we have no choice but to squeeze in there. It's narrow and leads to the next street, so when I give the go, then I want you to do your best to leap in there, alright?" he asked of her.
Katherine frowned a little at her husband before nodding. As the hunter prepared for it's next attack, John screamed out, "NOW!" Before she knew it, John pulled Shane along and leaped aside into the alleyway, not too long after so did she. The hunter flew over their heads, landing heavily on it's clacking feet.
It seemed as if it was confused now as it was looking around for it's prey. The three kept running forward through the alley, Katherine finally able to slow down a little and check their surroundings to make sure there weren't any zombies about. Making it to the other end, finally, she tried catching her breath, keeping her hands on her knees as she lurched over a little.
John sighed and looked around, allowing Shane to take a short rest seeing as there didn't seem to be anything threatening around. He needed the rest. As soon as he let go of Shane, he felt like the air was practically knocked out of him as Katherine thre herself at him, holding on tightly and crying into his chest. "John! I was worried!"
The husband smiled softly at her and held her back, rubbing her back a little to sooth her. "I'm alright Kat. Don't worry..."
Katherine smiled meekly and then looked over at Shane. "Are you alright, Shane?"

Shane's vision slowly came back into focus. Where was he? Where were Katherine and her husband? Were they all alright? His second question was quickly answered as he heard Katherine ask of his whereabouts, which also meant that they were indeed all alright. He coughed, sighing in relief. They were all okay. At least for now. He looked around until he could see Katherine's face, and nodded. "I-I think I'm okay. My ankle and chest hurt like hell, but other than that I'm fine." He sat for a moment, taking deep breaths to calm himself. He looked around a moment until he located Katherine's husband, and nodded towards him as well. "Thank you." The man certainly deserved his thanks, after saving his life. That had been a near-death for all of them. But wait! He looked around frantically, scanning the area. "Wh-where's that..that thing. Did you kill it?" If it wasn't dead, they might still be in some serious danger. As he waited for an answer he lay back against a wall, trying to rest his hurt ankle. He'd be able to walk, but it would be painful.

John nodded at the man, smiling a little. "It's what I do. But I shouldbe the one thanking you. You helped my wife out of some tight spots. Thanks,"
As Shane brought aboutthe other question about the current monster they had been fleeing from, Katherine frowned, looking around, shakily. "Um, we lost it...for now that is. I think it got confused and went off."
John patted his wife's back. "But just incase, let's get moving. I don't think it's safe staying put in just one place..."

"Right. We should get moving. And don't worry about it, I couldn't have just let her go alone." Shane smiled a little, and slowly pulled himself up to his feet. He was right of course, moving out quickly would be wise, especially since they hadn't managed to kill the creature. It would be back, and soon if they didn't move fast. Shane tested his ankle, stomping his foot on the ground lightly. Aside from a very ugly bruise on his ankle, it wasn't quite as bad anymore, the pain from the vise-like grip of the creature's tongue gone for the moment. He'd be able to keep up. "By the way," said Shane, turning towards the man, "I'm Shane." he extended his hand for a greeting. If they were going to travel together, they should certainly be acquainted with each other. With his other hand he reached behind his head, rubbing the back of his neck. What a mess. he thought to himself, wishing all this had never happened. This nightmare....all over again. I can't believe it. Still there was an upside. This time he was with a group, and he just had a feeling that they'd be alright. I just hope to god my feelings are right...

Katherine smiled warmly as she watched the two shake hands. "John Robins," John replied, returning the friendly gesture. Motioning back to Katherine, he patted her stomach and smiled at her. "C'mon, Kat, Shane, let's get going."
Katherine followed after the two men, keeping her eyes peeled on anything that seemed decayed or inhuman in any way. She wondered whether or not it was bright to stay holed up in the city. Hopefully her husband would figure something out and they could leave.
"Um, so, uh, where are we going then?" she asked, nervously.

After a moment, turning back to Katherine, Shane scratched his head. She made a good point. Just wandering around in the city was a bad idea, and it made them targets for random attacks. The best thing to do would be to get out of the god forsaken place....but it was a long way to the gate, and they certainly weren't prepared. "Hm. We have to find a way out of the city. But, we'll need supplies first, since it's a long way to the gate. We could perhaps go to the super center, there might be enough un-looted goods left there for us to bolster our stock. Besides that, they sell some guns there small time, rifles I think." Shane inspected his revolver. "And I could use a better gun. What do you think John?" Shane turned to look at the man, waiting for his response. Chances are he wanted to look for their daughter, but Shane had to ask, at least to see if they could get some supplies first.

Katherine looked up at John worriedly. "We still need to go pick up Kylie. Where'd you leave her?"
John frowned and looked down, sighing. Katherine knitted her eyebrows together, her heartbeat rising. "...John...?"
Her husband put his hands on her shoulders squeezing them a little as he tried to find a way to tell her theterrible news. Katherine reached her hands up, grasping his and frowning again. "Where's Kylie...?"
"Kat...Hun, Kylie's gone. Her cold developed into, well, into whatever caused all of this," he explained. Katherine'seyes widened. Her daughter was infected?! John pulled her into his arms and held her tight, his eyes softening and slightly watering. Katherine stood still,in total shock. She was upset, so suprises, so angry she couldn't even shed a tear at thispoint. Her little girl...was gone. Had turned into one of those monsters!

Shane bowed his head solemnly, acknowledging the couple's horrible loss. He had lost friends during the first outbreak, close friends, but to lose one's own flesh and blood, to lose one's child, that kind of pain he couldn't even imagine. It hurt him deeply to imagine this horrible disease taking family, children even, though he knew it happened all the time in this living hell that they now called a world. He continued looking at the ground as Katherine stood in shock, overwhelmed by the news. "I......I'm so sorry......" he said somberly, trying himself to take in the situation. "I....I can't believe...."

Katherine finally gripped her hands onto her husband's chest, her shoulders trembling as she sobbed into his uniform. "Kylie...Kylie I'm sorry we didn't- we didn't take good care-good care of you..."
John sighed and rubbed his wife's back, resting his stubbled chin on the top of her head. "It's alright...maybe it was just better for her to leave rather than grow up in this nightmare..." he explained to Shane. Of course he knew how bad that still seemed, but he wanted to be sure his wife would be alright.
"We have to go now. We still have one child we have to protect..." he said softly to her, referrencing her pregnancy. Looking over at Shane he nodded a little. "C'mon, we'll need to find supplies and get the hell out of this city as soon as we can."
Katherine sniffled and rubbed at her sore, red, eyes. "I guess so..."

"It's alright...maybe it was just better for her to leave rather than grow up in this nightmare..." Shane nodded his head. It was tough to think about, but John was right. The child's death was certainly a horrible tragedy, and a blow to Katherine that she might never recover from completely....but he had grown up in this same hellish nightmare, and he knew, it changed people. Had that little girl grown up in this....even if she had survived, she would never be normal. Shane was lucky that it hadn't effected him as badly as it had some. He looked down again, pondering the whole situation. On the very edge of his hearing he caught John talking to Katherine about another child that they had to protect. Shane looked up. He didn't quite understand, but he certainly hoped that whatever child there was left to protect would survive this horror. John finally got Katherine well enough for them to get going. They would need supplies enough for a few days to get out of the city; it was a very very long walk from here. A little voice though, at the very back of his head whispered to him, and its question thoroughly worried Shane. But after that.....what then? Sanctuary? Death? Another decade of horror and bare survival? Shuddering, he shook off the thought, knowing it would only paralyze him to think about it. "Alright then." Shane said with a nod. "We'd best get going before that thing comes back. So are we headed to the super center John? Or do you know of somewhere else we could go?"

Katherine kept her eyes down, her grip on her rifle tightening. Her heart ached for their lost child, she couldn't help but blame herself for not keeping a better eye on Kylie's condition...now she was paying the price for it.
John sighed and reloaded his shotgun. "Well, it's probably a good idea to try and see if there's anything there...Hopefully even some prenatal vitamins for my wife atleast. I've got..." he trailed off, searching through his bag. "I've got, three packs of instant noodles and a bottle of water. That should last us for atleast two days if we make it stretch, here," he said, handing half of the hard noodles to Shane. It was still wrapped in plastic.
Katherine stared at the food then down at her stomach, placing a hand on it. "We won't be able to survive without food...We'll lose strength and then..."
John frowned at his wife, lifting her chin up with hishand. "Hey, we're gonna do just fine. I'll make sure to protect you okay? Shane and I will go through the store for some food. You need to get off your feet for awhile in your condition."
"But John...mmm...alright...Shane, you don't mind us tagging along right? We don't want to weigh you down or anything," she told the younger man.
