Cindy nodded, worried that she would actually have to carry that out. She was worried why she would go first, but then it occurred to her: she was significantly more harmless looking than her partner. She wasn't threatening st the very least.
"You're not going to use me as bait are you?"

"Not at all." Sarah indicated the ax she was carrying. "Your weapon is silent, mine is not. One shot and they will know where we are at. I don't want to shoot unless absolutely necessary. If you wish, we could trade until I find something for myself."
By now the were skirting the town almost ready to enter from the eastern side. Still, Sarah found it curious that they had not run into any undead.

"Let's just hope we don't have to right? I really don't want to do that again if we don't have to."
Cindy saw that the first thing they were going to across other than mill houses was the town police station. Nothing impressive, small building, one story. But it told them where they were: Gainsborough.
"Ever heard of Gainsborough? I'm not from around here?"

Sarah had faintly heard of it. Nothing about the town stuck out to her.
"From what I remember, it isn't that big, but it does have a few diners, a used car lot, and a gas station. Let's look in the diner first. If it looks safe then we can get food, then steal a CSR and get out of here."
Sarah pointing down the darkened street to the bright lights of the diner.

Cindy followed where Sarah was pointing, glad that at least she was somewhat familiar with the town. It sure beat her knowledge of it and the surrounding area.
"It's really quiet. Sarah I don't like this. It feels like we are being watched again. Maybe we should keep going, find another town. I know it sounds stupid but -"
She stopped talking and slowly raised her hands. Two men had come out of the shadows with guns drawn. They looked exactly like what she thought small town police would look like: brown uniforms and large white hats. And they didn't look friendly.
"Please, don't shoot. We're not infected!"

Sarah quickly put her rifle to her shoulder and pointed it at the two men. She opened her mouth to warn them off, but before she could say anything, a spotlight came on and blinded them. Sarah also heard the distinct sound of rifles being charged. Slowly, she lowered her weapon.
"Drop you weapons, now!" Came a stern voice. "Or we will be forced to shoot."
The voice had a southern accent but it wasn't as bad as the hillbillies.
Sarah dropped her rifle and slowly took her handgun out of her holster and laid it on the ground.
"What do you want?", she asked.

Cindy laid her axe and hammer down, moving slowly as to not aggravate them into shooting out of fear or any other reason.
"Okay! Okay please don't shoot!"
She watched as the two men came up to her, picking up the axe and hammer. Wrote forcing her arms behind her back, the feel of cuffs on her wrists.
"Chief. There's blood on the axe. Looks fresh."

Sarah spoke up first. " Yeah we had some trouble down the road a ways at an old house. Something jumped out at us and killed it. We thought it was undead. More were on their way so we didn't have time to chech out the zombie. It wasn't u til now with the spotlight that we saw it was red", Sarah lied.
One of the men looked at it. "Was it the Le-Sade place?", he asked with a look of disgust on his face.
" No idea. And we didn't stick around to find out." Sarah tried to turn the attention off the possible murder investigation.
"What is this game and what are our options."
"Chief" looked them over. "We have all participated in the Game. You have to survive the maze that is filled with zombies. There are weapons that you find along the way. If you make it out, then are a member of the community, or we will give you what you need to make it back to civilization. If you refuse, then you are left outside the town, where the Le-Sade boys will be waiting for you."
There was a brief pause. "So, what do you say?"
Sarah spoke up. "I'll do the game, but I would like to rest first."
She looked over at Cindy.

"Wait, a maze? You want us to go into a maze, with those things? That's crazy!"
Cindy looked back at Sarah, trying to turn in the deputies trip. She winced when he held on tight, and she stopped struggling. The whole world had gone mad. It had to have. There is no way they would make it out of some sick maze.
"Please don't make us do this! Please, just let us go!"

"Cindy, stop! We don't want to be let go right now." Sarah was trying to calm her down. She pointed to the city limits where both trucks were sitting. Now, as daylight was beginning to emerge, Sarah could see that there were at least 8 men in the trucks. Ugly, dirty, and looking mean, the were waiting to see what the outcome of the girls would be.
"Do you want to be a wife to those 8 men?", she asked, already knowing the answer. Turning to the Chief she said," WE will run it together."
The Chief nods. "Smart choice. Most people released do not make it past them... And none come back."
"Follow me and we will begin."

"Please, uncuff me then? I won't struggle anymore."
Cindy looked back at the men in the trucks, shuddering and not even wanting to think of what would happen if they got a hold of her or Sarah. She let out a sigh of relief when she felt the cuffs off of her wrists again. Rubbing them, she reached down to pick up her hammer again only to feel a hand on her shoulder.
"What? You aren't making us do this unarmed are you?"

The Chief shook his head and motioned for his men to take their belongings.
"You will have a weapon, just not any of your own." He paused for a moment as a rack of weapons were brought before them. "Everyone in this town has taken this test. We are small, but this is a safe environment. We need to make sure that everyone here can kill the undead, even multiple undead alone. Everyone here pulls their weight. This test is not meant to be unreachable, just to make sure you know how to handle yourself. Once finished, you can choose to stay with us or move along. There are rewards along the way that you can pick up... think of this as a video game. Now, please pick a weapon."
The rack was set up. All of the weapons were in the melee class... no guns. There were machetes, knives, bats and and assorted impromptu sporting goods.
Sarah looked over the weapons. Some were old, but most were taken care of, with very little rust. From what Sarah could see, this wasn't just a blood game, but they were really evaluating them. If she was in their place, she would have thought this a great way of building a community in the post-apocalyptic society.
She picked up a pry bar / crowbar / wrecking bar that was about 3 feet long. She swung it around. It felt hefty and solid in her hands. "I'll take this."

Cindy looked over her options. She had only really carried the hammer and axe, so this was foreign territory to her. She picked up a wooden bat and swung it a few times. It had reach, and even if she didn't kill them right off, it would at least knock them down.
"Is this a good one?"

Sarah kinda shrugged a bit. "I would look for a metal bat instead. It would be lighter and more durable. That wooden one might break after a few hits." Sarah looked around for something that might work better than the bat. She found something that might work. It was a machete with a blacked out blade. She held it up for Cindy. "I think that this would work better for your and last longer."

Cindy put the bat back, and picked up the machete. It felt lighter, but for some reason she felt like it would be a far more effective weapon. She nodded, and bit her lower lip, trying not to look as scared as she felt.
"We have to do this don't we? I'm really, really scared."
