That was all that Sarah was waiting for. She gunned the engine and pulled the doors open to the foyer. Driving to the front door she took the key and unlocked it. Behind her in the room, she could hear the secret door being beaten open. Shouts came from above as several more men were running toward the stairs.
Sarah drove carefully through the front door and the stopped long enough to lock the door, breaking the key off in the lock.
"Let's get out of here. Hang on."
Sarah pointed the motorcycle down the stairs and gunned the engine again. She was down the stairs and on the drive before they could get the door open. While they did get away, she knew that those guys were not going to give up that easily. If they had it their way, they would be raped until they got hungry enough and then eat one of them.
At the edge of the driveway, she looked left and right down the street. Across the street there was an field of corn that was overgrown.
Behind them, Sarah hear several trucks fire up their engines. Panic nearly set in. There was no way to outrun a truck on this bike carrying two people. Sarah gunned it for the field, where her off road capabilities would help.

"Oh God this is going to be scary!"
Cindy held tightly onto Sarah's sides, her face buried in the woman's backpack as she tried to keep from falling off. The woman knew what she was doing, and she had to trust that she could either get away from the others, or figure out a plan to escape.

The cold night air stung at Sarah's eyes and she was halfway blinded by the tears. She slowed down a bit, listening for the vehicles. To her, it sounded like they had split up and one headed north on the road and the other, south. Sarah continued on for another 15 minutes. Then she stopped and turned off her motorcycle and laid it on its side. Then she started going through her stuff. She had left her knife behind and a pair of clothes. Her clothes irritated her, but she was fairly ****ed off about her knife.
"What all did you leave behind?"

"I...I don't know. I don't think anything."
Cindy looked through her bag. Blanket, bear, eating utensils, nothing that she had unpacked before Everything was back, although it was haphazardly thrown in.
"I've got everything. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been sleeping so deeply. I thought he was going to kill me, I could barely see him when he first got me."

Sarah shook her head. "Not your fault Cindy. I checked that room over myself and didn't find that door. You can't help if they snuck up on you. I will say we are lucky that they were alive, otherwise, you would have been infected and I would have to shoot you."
Sarah began to rearrange things to make her backpack fit better. Then she took off her rifle and put the backpack back on. "And good shot by the way. Stone Cold Engineering Killer. Remind me not to make you mad." Sarah was trying to lighten the mood a bit. She knew the feelings that Cindy was going through. It was the same feeling that she felt when she had killed a man.
"Help me hide the bike in this ditch. We won't be able to take it any further." Sarah saw Cindy stare at her. "It's out of gas. I only had a quarter of a tank and was hoping to find some old vehicles. Won't be doing that now."
Sarah pointed at the ditch. It was where a massive oak tree had fallen and the hole was where the rotted roots were at. "We will hide it there and continue on foot. A ways back was a town that we can stop at to get help."
By now, the rain had stopped, but Sarah still heard flowing water. She pulled one of her dirty socks out and pulled it over her flashlight, killing the distance of the light, but allowing her to see around her. It would diffuse the light enough so that it would still be hard to see. "Follow me."
After a few minutes of walking, they found a river. "We can follow the river back downstream and should run into the town."
Sarah stepped into the river. Her feet were soaked already so it wouldn't matter. Plus it was not a very cold night so it would be okay. By walking in the river, she would not be leaving footprints on the banks for the inbred hillbillies to follow.
"Keep an ear out for any sounds."

Cindy sighed, her shoes would now be soaked again. But it was better than being found. The thought of one of those men touching her again...
"Ugh. I need a bath. I can still feel his hands on me."
She tightened her grip on the axe, ready to swing it at anything out there. Was there any of the dead in the town? Would the me. Be in town, waiting for them?
"I never killed anyone before."

Sarah's voice was hushed. "I know. I reacted the same way when I killed my first uninfected person. It was awful. Not going to lie, it took a while to get over. But hey", Sarah's voice got peppy. "You have me, so that's something right?"
Sarah grew quiet, half lost in her thoughts, half listening for any rustling in the bushes and crops around them. She wished she had her knife instead of the rifle. It was quite noisy.

"Yeah. Thank you. For saving me. I was scared for a moment that you were going to let them have me. I've known some people that would have. To save their own skin. I saw that when this all happened. Everyone for themselves right?"
Cindy stopped whispering, realizing she was just making noise and distracting Sarah. She had already saved her life once. She didn't need to make herself any more of a baggage issue.

Sarah didn't say anything. She may act like she didn't care, but she still had morality. Not wanting to make a sound, she shrugged at Cindy, who was behind her. She continued to walk through the river, hopefully making their way back to town. Of course, they could be walking back into hillbill inbred hell, but better the unknown in front of them than what was waiting behind him.

Cindy walked behind her in silence. She wasn't sure how far they would have to go, and they needed to be alert for anything that could be out in the brush with them.
After a while she saw something that looked like a light and pointed it out to Sarah, ducking slightly in the ditch.

Sarah ducked down too, trying to be as quiet and still as possible. That is when she heard the sound of an engine. One of the trucks was close by and slowly cutting through the fields. It stopped for about 5 minutes and sat. Sarah's heart was up in her throat. Then, after what seemed like an eternity, the truck drove on toward the town.

Cindy held her breath, her heart beating in her chest as she waited for the truck to leave. When it did she let out a sigh of relief and waited to see what sarah was going to do.
"Is that the direction of town? They will be looking for us there. Do we still go that way?"

Sarah nodded. "It is, but it is the only town that we will be able to get to without dying." She paused for a second. Then she turned to look at Cindy. "Any moral objection to stealing a car?" Sarah knew she was asking Cindy about stealing after she killed someone, but the only way to get out alive was to get a vehicle.

Cindy shook her head, remembering the SUV that had gotten her so far away from the college. She wondered f the people who owned it had survived. Or were they dead because she took their car?
Shaking the thoughts from her mind, she gave the woman a weak smile and whispered back to her
"Not like anyone is going to call the cops right?"

"True and this far South, I wouldn't trust any cop that we would come across", said Sarah. By now they were getting close to the city, which was both good and bad. Good... Because they could get a car and head out. Bad... Because well this was hillbilly territory and Sarah shuddered at the thought if what went on here.
" Cindy, you take the lead. Let's get out of the river and try to enter from the East side of town so that maybe we can sneak around the toothless brigade. Also, if they capture me, please shoot me in the head."
At that Sarah wasn't kidding. Some things were worse than death.
