Kevin took a quick look at the bathroom and then opened a few cabinets. Except for plates and utensils, there wasn't much. This area has either not had anything in it, or it was ransacked completely. The only item that he found that could be of use was one of those solar powered / crank flashlight-radio combinations that most people used in case a storm knocked the power out. When Rissa showed the crowbar, Kevin nodded. "That will probably be really useful to pry open doors and bash in skulls", he said. He turned back to the couch and the chair that were in the middle of the room.
"Power's out, so I wouldn't open that refrigerator. Who knows what is growing in there." With a sigh he sat down in the chair, leaving the couch for Cameron and Rissa. "I say we eat before it starts getting dark. Then we should look down in those tool benches. I bet there are some other crowbars or useful items down there."
Bringing his beer and peanut butter out he put them both on the coffee table and waited for the others to join. He assumed that since they were in a group, that the food would be shared.

Cameron brought his stuff back over to the table. He sat down on the far right side of the couch, nearest Kevin, leaving the left side open for Rissa. He thought that it would be better to not have her surrounded by two strange men, considering that she had been tied up. He dumped out the crackers, the soup and put the 2 liter of coke on the table. Then he produced three bowls, forks and spoons and a can opener from the drawers. Lastly, he had brought three cups so that they wouldn't have to drink after each other.
He opened the cans of soup and evenly divided them between the three bowls and then slide a sleeve of crackers to both Rissa and Kevin. Next he poured the worst Coke ever made into the cups and raised his up.
"To a feast fit for a king... with people who aren't undead." Then he took a swig. Caffeine free, sugar free diet Coke tastes about as nasty as it sounds, but Cameron gulped down the drink. The soup was cold and the drink was warm, but it was probably the best meal that Cam had had since leaving Vegas with Will.
He leaned back and then looked over at Rissa for a moment.
"Rissa, I have to ask, but why were you tied up?"
Cameron had wanted to ask that questions since they first met, but had held off until they knew that they were safe. Now, with only the meal and then finding a place to sleep for the night, he figured it was a good time to ask. Probably not the right time... Hell, there may never be a right time, but if people were after her, and she was here with them, then Cameron felt like he should know about it.

Rissa put down her soup and fidgeted a little, looking down at her shoes instead of the two men. They obviously weren't out looking for her, so if she told them her story, she'd at least be safe enough to not worry about her being brought back to her compound.
"I escaped. From the compound I lived. I...didn't want to marry the man the community leaders paired me with. He was old, had three wives already. I ran, and I was caught. They were going to take me the Las Vegas, and then back home from there. I...I got away when we got attacked by a group of the dead. I don't know if they survived or not, I just wanted to get away."
She looked up, a worried look on her face as she waited to see what they would say or do. One hand slipped to the crowbar by her side, though she didn't pick it up. She wasn't going back to that, not if she had anything to say about it.
"They might be trying to find me again. I..I won't go back to that."

Cameron realized that he had stopped with a spoonful of soup hanging in the air as he listened to his story. He had heard of several "situations" like this in Utah, with horrible men doing unspeakable things to young girls all in the name of religion. With the world going to crap and hardly any law enforcement, situations like that were all too common.
He quickly put his spoon back in his bowl and shot a quick glance over at Kevin. "We will do what we can to keep you safe", he said, knowing full well that he might not be able to keep that promise. "What should we look for? Are they all wearing the white robes, or drinking the same Kool-aid. Is there a secret handshake?"

"You'll know when you see them. They're...they're called The Branded. They have these rings burned into their cheek. They're like a hunting pack. They go out and find people who try to leave, or wives that get out of the compound. Or their cells."
Rissa began rubbing her arms as she tried to not sink back into the memories of the cells, waiting to see who she would be paired with, who would be taking her home. If the manacle had been any tighter around her ankle she would never have been able to escape when the cell door was open. She'd still be there, still with him...
Her eyes looked glazed as she seemed to look off into a world that wasn't there. Back in the darkness, hearing the other crying, silently praying, hoping for their freedom.

"That sounds awful", was about all the Cameron could reply. Girls in cages waiting to be married off in the name of religion was definitely disturbing. "At least we know what to look for if we ever see them somewhere."
Cameron wanted to get off the subject. It made him a little uneasy to say the least. By now, he had finished his dinner and was getting sleepy. The sun was starting to go down, and the garage was getting darker. If they didn't find a place to bed down for the night soon, they would be stumbling around in the dark.
"Rissa, why don't you take the couch. I'm going to sleep over in front of the door on the floor. That way no one can sneak into the room without waking me up. Plus it is better on my back", lied Cameron. He wasn't looking forward to sleeping on the floor, but it would be most uncomfortable sleeping on a couch with a girl that had been through what she had been through.
Cameron grabbed two throw pillows from the couch and went to the door. He hadn't planned on being here this long so his bedroll and pillow were back in his truck. He grabbed a roll of paper towels, intent on using it as a pillow while the pillows would lessen the hardness of the floor.
"I say we get some sleep. Tomorrow we can check out the jeep and then get some gas and make it back to my truck. Then on to Vegas."

Rissa nodded, finishing her food and then putting the dishes, for a lack of a better term, on the floor away from where they were sleeping tonight. When they got up in the morning she could dispose of them. She didn't expect them to be staying too long, but that didn't mean she should leave a mess. Besides, she didn't want to leave any trace that they had been there. She was still being hunted after all.
"Good night. Thank you Cameron, for everything."
She curled up on the couch, the cushions feeling luxurious compared to her normal sleeping arrangements. She was asleep before she knew it, a dreamless, exhausted sleep taking her.

As light streamed in the dirty covered windows, Cameron began to stir. Then he sat up with a start, reaching for his gun and his machete. He looked around, wondering what was out of place. He saw a girl sleeping on a couch, freaked out for a moment and then remembered what happened yesterday. Him and Kevin... wait. Where was Kevin?
Cameron's gaze took him to the empty chair that Kevin had been sleeping in last night. Getting up quietly, Cam checked out the bathroom and them the front of the store and the garage. The Jeep was still there, but no Kevin. Sometime during the night, Kevin had left. Cameron didn't know what to think of it.
Entering the break room again, he saw that all the food that Kevin scrounged, save the beer, was left. "That is truly weird", said Cameron to himself.
It didn't really change his plans of getting gas and getting to Vegas, but he had felt safer with Kevin and his weapons around. Opening up the last sleeve of crackers and the peanut butter that Kevin left, he used a clean spoon to grab a large glup of it and put it on a place. Sure the world may have gone to hell, but that didn't mean that Rissa was okay with double dipping.
He divided up the crackers and began to eat his portion, waiting for Rissa to wake up.

Rissa woke to the sound of movement, her head jerking up and looking around through sleep-filled eyes before she stopped and focused on the food on the small table and Cameron eating. She sat up, running a hand through her mussed hair and remembering yesterday. She was safe, the others weren't there. She was surrounded by people that weren't going to turn her over.
She stood up and stretched, coming to the table and sitting down, taking a portion of the crackers and peanut butter and leaving the rest for Kevin. She supposed he was on guard duty, but she wasn't going to assume he had already eaten. She wasn't sure what time it was, early more than likely, and that meant they had the whole day to figure out how they were going to escape.
"Morning. Kevin on guard duty? I can take him some food if he hasn't eaten yet."

Cameron paused for a moment and finished a cracker. He used some more of the coke to wash down the peanut butter and then he shook his head.
As far as I can tell, he left sometime during the night. Maybe he went out to explore or something, but I've checked the entire building and he isn't here."
Cameron grabbed his last cracker and scooped up the rest of the peanut butter from his plate on it. He looked at it wistfully, and then ate it. "The Jeep's here... maybe he went scouting for weapons or more food, but I don't really know."
"Speaking of weapons, can you shoot a gun?" With Kevin now gone, the only firearms they had were Cam's revolver and rifle. While Cam wasn't keen on giving away his gun, he also knew that they both needed to be armed.

Rissa glanced nervously towards the windows, wondering if the man had run off to find the Branded. It would be a good bounty for her. She was young, pretty and could produce many children. Driving the idea from her mind, she shook her head at his question. None of the women from her compound were allowed weapons. She didn't even know how to fire a gun, and she doubted she would be able to hit anything.
"This crowbar will work for me. Until I can find something better I guess."

Cameron nodded and took his hand off his revolver. He was going to offer it to her until they got to Vegas.
As they finished their breakfast, Cameron scooped up the peanut butter jar into his backpack and picked up his empty gas can. "So here the choices as I see it", began Cameron. With Kevin gone and people possibly looking for Rissa, Cameron was finding Still Creek to be less inviting than he had hoped. "We can go by the Police Station down the road and see if they have any weapons. Then we can take gas back to my car and head for Vegas."
With Rissa not feeling real confident with a weapon, that option seemed like too much of a risk to be worth it.
"Or we can just get gas and get back to my truck and head for Vegas."
"Which course sounds better?"

"I will need some training and practice, but I am alright with going for the guns. Even if I can't use it yet, having one wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe we can find some other things we can use too."
While Rissa knew she would probably be a danger to herself more than anything else, having a few spare weapons wouldn't be a bad idea. Even if she never really learned to use them properly, they could trade them for supplies, or perhaps she could just carry the weapon for Cameron, like a spare.
"How are we going to get away from all of the dead people outside?"

Cameron nodded. While he was comfortable with his weapons, having choices to keep or sell was always helpful. It had gotten him some more ammo and food at different times.
"Okay, so Sheriff's Station first, and then gas... no, gas first and then Sheriff's Station", Cameron corrected himself. After leaving here, he didn't want to come back here.
"How are we going to get away from all of the dead people outside?"
Oh yeah, there were the undead that were in the way. "Let's have a look and see what we have to work with", he said, packing up his things and going back to the garage. The windows in the garage doors showed him that there were more than a handful of undead milling around. Undoubtedly, Kevin had either killed or led a few of them off. The gas pumps were just 25 feet away... a quick sprint really, but the undead made that a dangerous proposition. If only they had a distraction, he thought. Sure they could wade out there and hope to kill them all without getting bit, but it only took one moan to draw more.
Then his eyes came to rest on the jeep. "I have an idea", he said pointing at the Jeep.
"We can turn on the jeep and put it in gear. Then we can get another crowbar or piece of metal or wood and ram on the accelerator. Open the garage door and put it in gear and then sent it out down the street. That should draw the undead away for a few moments while we fill up the gas can with gas. Since I'm more familiar with my weapons, I'll cover you while you pump it."
Cameron paused for a moment. "What do you think?", he asked. He has another plan, but it was more complicated.

"As long as that thing starts. I just hope the Jeep doesn't crash into anything we want or need."
Rissa looked at the vehicle, wondering how long it has been sitting and if it would even start if they tried. She had found some motor oil, but she wasn't sure how to even put it in the vehicle.
"We can always try. If it doesn't start, do you think we could just roll it out and hope it works as a distraction anyways?"
