"I wouldn't chance it", responded Cameron. Then another idea came to him. "What if we set the horn to honk continuously and then we open the gate. We climb up to the roof and come down the rear of the building and then we can sneak around to the front and shut the gate, trapping most of them inside."
Or...
Cameron turned red with embarrassment. The answer was staring them in the face. The jeep had a gas container on the back and they hadn't checked the level of the gas in the vehicle itself. They may just be able to siphon it from the jeep and fill up both containers.
Cameron grabbed a long thick flathead screwdriver. "Let's see how much gas is in here", he said. "Rissa, go find a large clean pan. I'll stab the gas tank and drain it. If we have enough, then we won't have to worry about the pumps outside. We will just go out the back towards the Sheriff's station."

"Alright, I'll see what I can find."
Rissa scurried back into the main part of the shop, checking to see if there was anything they could use to collect whatever gasoline was still in the vehicle. Sounds from outside distracted her, but after a few minutes she came back to Cameron with a large black plastic oil collection tub. It was empty and apparently never used, so it was her best option.
"Here. Will this work?"

Cameron smiled and nodded. "That will be great. So, I'm going to stab a hole in the bottom of the tank and then we can drain it and then use that funnel over there to fill up both tanks. At least in theory."
Cameron took the pan and the screwdriver and laid down on his back, sliding under the Jeep. He wiggled his way up to the tank, which was thankfully in the back. He tapped the tank and it sounded about half full. He was hoping to get 7 gallons out of it. He placed the pan down and then began tapping on the tank itself. The jeep was over 20 years old and though it looked nice on the outside, the underside showed hard usage off road. He found a weak spot and put the screwdriver in the spot. Reaching down, he grabbed a hammer and started pounding on the screwdriver.
It took only 5 whacks before he was able to puncture the tank. He removed his hands as gas spilled out of the tank and into the pan. It spewed out at first, but then slowed to a trickle as it was becoming empty. It should take only a few minutes to completely empty it.

Rissa was glad to be of use, and kept an eye on the barricaded windows as they waited for the tank to empty. Once they were able to get out of the gas station, she'd feel a lot safer. Actually, she would have felt safer if there wasn't a group of people still looking for her, and the hungry dead keeping them trapped. When they got to the open road she would feel a lot safer.
"Sounds like its done. Are we going to carry it to your vehicle?"

Cameron had just finished filling up the two gas cans and tightening the lids on them. There was a little bit left in the bottom of the pan, but not enough to make a difference, so he left it on the tool bench. Wiping his hands off, he holstered his revolver, and slung his rifle over his shoulder. Then he picked up his machete in one hand and the 5 gallon gas tank in the other (man was it heavy).
"I say we get to the Sheriff's office first and then head out to the truck. I don't want to chance coming back into town once we leave here. With this amount of gas, we should have enough to get to Vegas."
Vegas... Cameron had never wanted to visit that city except for Comicon's and Cosplay before the outbreak. Now, even though it was much more dangerous, it was probably the safest place to me.
"If you can carry the 2 gallon can, I can manage the 5 gallon can. We can go out through the scrapyard and out the back fence. I think that will be easier then climbing up to the top of the roof and down again with gas cans."
Heading for the back door, he took a deep breath. Then he looked at Rissa. "Are you ready?"

"Yeah. No, but yeah."
Rissa knew they had to go outside, and then they could get to safety. That didn't mean she had to like it. She took a deep breath, tried to control the shaking in her hands, and picked up the smaller gas can. It felt heavy, and she tried not to think about how slow she was going to be carrying it. If anything chased them, she knew that she couldn't let it go. She would have to trust that Cameron knew what he was doing and that they wouldn't run into anything dead and hungry. Or alive and hunting.

Cameron took a deep breath and then slowly opened the door that led to the scrap yard at the rear of the gas station. He couldn't see over the wooden stockade fence that surrounded the scrap yard. Slowly he began to creep out into the yard, away from the relative safety of gas station. He took a moment to calm his nerves... man he was scared. He felt naked, but in the long run, they needed to make it to Vegas.
He crept out to the gate to the fence. Luckily, someone had cut a hole in the door and put in some clear plastic so that they could see out. He looked out and saw that there were no undead near the door. He waved Rissa over.
"So far I don't see any, when I open the door, we will head down the alley as quietly as we can. We need to walk quickly, but do not run! Three buildings down, we will turn right and hit the street. The Sheriff's Station should be right across the street. We will sneak around back to see if we can get in. From this time until then we can't talk, so if I raise my fist, that means stop. If I use my palm against the wall or down, that means to get against the wall or get down."
Cameron took a deep breath.
"Let's go." Cameron could see the fear and hesitation in Rissa's eyes. He had to keep her moving so that she wouldn't panic.

Rissa was about to speak, letting Cameron know that she understood, but simply nodded, deciding now would be the best time to stop talking. She tried to balance her smaller container better, the quiet sloshing of the gasoline inside loud in her ears. They just had to go a short distance. If she followed his directions they would be fine. All she had to do was trust that he knew what he was doing.

Man, I hope I know what I'm doing, thought Cameron. He quietly crept to the corner of the building and looked around. So far, so good, he thought. Better keep going.
He waved Rissa on up and point to the bright yellow shop three doors down as their destination. Taking a deep breath, he set out at a consist and quick walk... fast enough to get down to the yellow building in a few minutes, but not too fast that they would run into anything in a blind corner.
The first and second buildings were connected and formed a big blank wall with now windows. Cameron was past those in less than two minutes. After the 2nd building, Cameron stopped and held up his hand in a fist. Between the 2nd and 3rd building there was a narrow alley that ran from the main street of Still Creek back to the alley that they were walking on.
Cameron peeked around the corner and pulled his head back. There were 3 huge dumpsters in the alley and 2 undead walkers were just standing there, looking at the street. Nothing had grabbed their attention, so they were just standing there. However, Cameron knew that it only took one sound to alert the entire area around them. He motioned for Rissa to be extra quietly and then he began to slowly creep out from behind the wall.

Rissa followed slowly, her heart pounding in her ears as they went around the corner and saw the two undead in the alley. There was no other option, other than to go back. They either took the two of the undead out, or they had to wait for them to move. By the looks of it, Cameron intended to dispatch them both. She shifted the gas can in her hand, and tightened her grip on the crowbar she had. She didn't relish getting close to them, but she knew how to kill one, and would if she had to.

As Cameron got closer to the two walkers, he noticed that right behind there was a bunch of broken glass. There was no way to sneak up on the quietly... the crunching of the glass under his shoes would set them off. Slowly, with his heart nearly beating out of his chest, he backup down the alley to the corner where Rissa was waiting. Instead, he picked up a medium sized rock and hurled it down the alley, over their heads. The rock ricocheted off the last dumpster, with a boom. Both of the walkers, their attention fully focused in the direction of the sound, started forward with a lurch, heading to the dumpster and away from Cam and Rissa.
Cameron motioned for Rissa to follow him. They made their way by the alley, and finally made it to the third building. At the edge of the building, Cameron stopped to put his can down and take a drink from his bottle of water. He offered a bottle to Rissa as well.
"So now we go down the side of this building and right across the street is the sheriff's station."
As he looked he saw that the front door of the Sheriff's Station was smashed in at the top half. "So the front door is smashed. When we get there, let's leave the gas cans outside on the steps. No sense taking them with us. When we leave, we will pick them up again."
Cameron paused for a moment. "Are you good to go?"

"Rissa took the offered bottle and drank from it, wiping her mouth and handing it back to the man. She wondered if it was looters, or if the undead had gotten inside. She supposed they would find out soon enough.
"I'm ready. I just...want to be indoors again. Being out here is scarier than I thought."
She picked up her gas can and choked up on the crowbar, giving it a test swing. She nodded to herself, and got ready to move again.

Cameron nodded and put the bottles back in his pack. Then he grabbed his machete and can and they crept to down the side of the building. Nothing happened on the way, but now they were at the corner of the street and they would have to run across the 4 lane street to get to the steps of the Sheriff's Office. This was the most out in the open that they had been in a while. Cameron shared Rissa's sentiment. He wanted to get in doors quickly.
Actually, he wanted out of the town and back to Vegas.
Nodding to the building, Cameron took off at a fast walk. Looking side to side, he kept an eye on his surroundings. There was a large group of walkers up the street and another down the street as well. Some were turned away, but some were facing them. He knew that their luck was going to run out. He ducked down as he walked. Hoping that from either side, he would look to blend in with the other group... using each group to help hide him.
But it wasn't to be.
A moan went up from the larger group and many of the walkers stopped and began to turn towards Cameron and Rissa. "Run!" whispered Cameron and he took off at a sprint for the last 10 feet to the sheriff's office. He put his gas can down by the door and stuck his blade through the hole in the door. It hit nothing but air and nothing tried to grab him. The moans were getting louder, but for now, they were blocked by either group by the short covering over the front door. Cameron pulled the damaged door open and quickly went it. Then he looked around his immediate area for any threats, which were none. When Rissa came through the door, he pushed the door closed and then sank to the ground under the front desk, waiting to see if anyone would follow them.
