Rissa shook her head, smiling around a bite of whatever it was she was eating. She didn't know what it said on the bag, so she just hoped it was tasting the way it was supposed to.
"Only child. A curse on my parents I suppose, but I am glad it was just me. No attachments right?"
She finished her meal, and took the bag and tossed it into the trash bin by the desk. Didn't want to leave a mess after all.
"So does that happen often? Girls throwing drinks in your face?"

Cameron was internally glad that there was nothing holding Rissa to the compound. He did have a terrifying thought of invading the compound to get someone else out and it not succeeding. He took another bite, finishing off the beef flavored mush. When they reached Vegas, he would have the thickest steak he could find. He tossed his bag into the trash as well.
"Well, as you could probably tell, I'm not what they call a ladies man. Really haven't dated too much, and when I have I became so flustered that I said the wrong thing."
Cameron also realized that the question was leading to Rissa wanting to know more about him. "I'm an orphan as such. My mom died before the outbreak, my dad was turned early in outbreak. My Dad ran a game store in Dallas and I was in Vegas when the outbreak hit. I was trying to get home, but I wound up here." He reached over and put his arm around Rissa. "And I found a wife, so win win, right."

Rissa leaned into Cameron's body, closing her eyes and nodding. So he had finally accepted her as his wife. This was a good thing in her mind. That meant he would protect her, and would teach her how to protect them both, and what ways she could make him happy.
"I'm sorry. My parents have always been a part of my life. But they are part of the community. I can't go back there. So...when will you mark me? You don't have a symbol, but you could pick one if you liked. I could help!"
She snuggled into him more, establishing that she was more than happy to belong to him.

With all that was going on, Cameron actually felt happy. With all the loss and death and destruction in the world, this little corner of Still Creek held hope.
"Hopefully there will come a day that you can be reunited with family in a safe way. As for your mark, I think this will do."
Cameron reached into his pocket and pulled out the one thing that wasn't survival gear from downstairs. He held out a gold band that had a single diamond in it. Even in the little light it sparkled. He grabbed her hand left hand and slid the ring on her ring finger. It was too big and was loose, but it looked great.

Rissa just stared at her hand. The ring was too large, but it was beautiful to her. She didn't say anything for a minute, taking in the gesture. None of the brides wore rings anymore, only the elders did.
"It's...amazing. Thank you. I will be proud to bear you many children. As many as you wish."
She leaned up and kissed Cameron, her eyes full of tears. This time they weren't tears of pain, but of absolute joy. She would wear the ring proudly. She would be his proudly.

Cameron was about to laugh at her comment of children when his mouth was covered up by Rissa's. At first he tensed, but then as it continued, he relaxed into the kiss. His arms slide around her and he held her so that she wouldn't run away when her senses came back to her.
After a minute of not being able to breath, he pulled away. He looked her in the eyes. Her cheeks were wet from the tears.
"Damn."

"Yeah. I'm glad you didn't find a wife. You're one heck of a kisser."
Rissa blushed, planted a few more kisses on his cheek and neck while he caught his breath. She liked the way his stubble felt. Like a scrub brush, but gentler.
"I...hope we can spend many nights together. Would that please you?"

Even in the dark, Cameron was blushing fiercely. He wasn't used to this type of attention. He shifted a little bit. "I would and we have several more days to discuss our life together, but let's get some sleep. We got to get out of this hell hole first." He hesitated for a moment. "Also, I'm a traditional guy, so nothing more than this will happen until we get to a chapel. But yes, I am very pleased with you."
By now, his eyelids were growing heavy and the warmness of Rissa beside him was quickly putting him to sleep. "Good night, my love", he said as he drifted off to sleep.

"Good night husband."
Rissa smiled at that. Cameron seemed to be a good man. She could have done far worse. That thought was in her dreams as she faded into sleep, and curled herself around Cameron's chest as she got comfortable.

The night drifted on and towards sunrise the rain stopped. Cameron slept soundly, having a pretty full day. Finally the sun emerged and it came through the gaps in the blanket over the window and hit Cameron in the face. At first he was startled by the body that lay next to him, but then he remembered everything about last night and smiled. Rissa was still asleep, looking happier than he had seen her be during the time that he knew her.
He leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. "Time to get up."

Rissa made a snorting noise and jerked her head up, blinking slowly as she tried to focus on Cameron. She had slept really well, and for the first time in many months was glad she was awake.
"Morning. So, are we going to try for the truck, or have something to eat first? Escape or breakfast, your choice my husband."

"I say we eat first. Once we get going, it is possible that we won't be able to eat again until we hit Vegas. Then we can load up the truck and head out to my car. If I can't get it working, we will pack up my car in the back of the truck and head down to Vegas. I'm not really tied to the vehicle... just the stuff inside."
Cameron stood up and held a hand out to Rissa to help her up. He pulled her into a hug and kissed her again. "Yep, definitely getting used to this. Come on, let's head downstairs." Cameron picked up his gear and held out his hand to Rissa so that they could hold hands down the stairs. Yes, Cameron was on cloud nine as he hit the ground floor of the pawn shop. Just eat, use the bathroom, pack up and head out. Everything was going well...
Until he heard a horse neigh outside on the street.

Rissa froze when she heard the unmistakable sound of a horse outside. Had there been more Branded, waiting for them? Or had one of the horses simply wandered into town, looking for its devoured master? The panic in her eyes told Cameron that she was scared to come into view of the pawn shop windows to find out.
"We have to check. It might be a horse, might be more of them."

Cameron froze too. "We do have the element of surprise and maybe we can get going before they can get to us. I don't want to kill any more people." He cast a sideways glance at Rissa. "Plus I already have my wife... I don't need another."
Then he got serious. "I'll check it out. Get our gear together. When I'm sure that they are far away, we can start it up and drive away. If it is too dangerous to go to my car, we will head straight to Vegas."
He gave her a quick kiss and grabbed his rifle and headed to the front door.

Rissa nodded and smiled as Cameron went to the door. As quietly as she could, she began to gather up the items they had found, quickly packing and moving items to the back door where the truck was located. Once she had the all clear, she would start moving items to the truck.
"Please just be a wandering horse."
