Cameron searched his closet. The only thing useful that he found were a few jackets and a gun belt. other than that, no go on weapons. He heard Rissa yelp and quickly went to her. He found her holding her side and past her in the closet was a cabinet mounted to the wall.
"Are you hurt?", he asked, apprehensively. His first thought was she was bitten and his hand instinctively went to his gun. "Are you bitten?"

Rissa bit her lower lip and shook her head, lifting the side of her shirt to show pale skin followed by a nasty purplish/black bruise the size of a man's fist on her side. She lowered the shirt, proving she wasn't bitten and wishing the pain had stopped.
"One of the Branded kicked me when I fell. I don't think anything's broken, but it still hurts a lot."
She pulled on the handle again, the cabinet not opening.
"I think there might be something good in here, but I'm not strong enough to force it open. Maybe you can give it a try? Or we could use this?"
She held up her crowbar, knowing in her current condition she couldn't be able to open the doors to the cabinet, but Cameron was more than capable of doing so.

Cameron sighed with relief and took his hand off his pistol. He liked having Rissa around and didn't fancy shooting her. "Yeah, sure. Let me give it a try", he said, taking the crowbar from her. "I didn't know your pain was that bad. Take these", he said taking a small bottle of pills out of his backpack. He shook out two ibuprofen and handed them to her.
"I won't totally kill something like that, but it should help until we get to Vegas."
Stepping up to the locker, he could see that they hadn't been the first people to try the locker. Scratch marks and dings were all over the locker, especially around the hinges and lock. Finding a small bend in the door by the lock, Cameron put the crowbar into it and jammed it in harder. Then he worked the crowbar back and forth for a few minutes.
After 10 minutes, he had worked up a good amount of sweat, but the door was almost open. He wiped the sweat from his brow and then attacked it again.
With a metal screech that seemed to sound across the country, the lock popped off and the door swung open. Cameron waited for a few minutes, listening for the moan of the dead who heard them. Minutes passed, but nothing slammed into the door.
Still, he wanted to get out of here soon. Handing the crowbar back to Rissa, he looked inside. The locker wasn't empty, but it was the jackpot either. There were three guns in there and two bulletproof vests. Cameron grabbed the vest and put them on the desk. "Take your pick", he said to Rissa. Then he started to examine the vests. They were intact and new. While the undead didn't shoot and it would be cumbersome, but it might give them some protection against the Branded if they ran into them.

Rissa had looked at her options. A pump-action shotgun, a revolver similar to the one Cameron was carrying, and semi-automatic pistol. She took the revolver, and pointed it at the ground as she got used to the weight in her hands. She put it on the table next to the vests, and gave a shrug. She didn't know how to load it, and supposed it was probably the safest for her to use.
"I..don't know how to load it. Or if it is loaded already. We weren't allowed to touch guns in the compound."

Cameron picked up the revolver and then walked over to stand beside Rissa. He held the gun out between them, but the barrel facing down.
"You can push this button here and it will release the cylinder." Cameron pushed the release button and then pushed the cylinder out of the gun. Now they could see that it was not loaded. He flipped the gun on its side and then pointed at the rod that ran under the barrel.
"When you need to empty the gun, you can push this and it will push them out of the cylinder so that you can take the empty shells out and then put in new ones." He showed Rissa how it worked and then closed the cylinder.
"It will take some time to learn how to accurately shoot any gun, but you can line up this rear sight with the notch on the front sight. If they are lined up correctly, then the shot will be accurately."
Cameron reached into the locker and pulled out a box of .38 special, which was the ammo for the revolver. "This ammo will go to this gun. It is probably the simplest gun to use, but its range is somewhat limited. I wouldn't use it past 25 yards, unless you practice. Also, you it will only hold 6 rounds at a time."
Cameron reached in for the shotgun. He didn't care for shotguns too much. It was a Mossberg 500 pump action with a composite stock and extended shell holder.
Lastly, he pulled out the semi-automatic pistol Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm. Cameron felt a pang of sorrow when he looked at it. His dad had had one before the outbreak.
"This is more complicated, but will hold 15 rounds of 9mm and can shoot faster. But you need to push this button here to eject the magazine and then you chamber a round by putting the magazine back in, racked the slide for it to work."
Cameron went through the motions as he explained them to Rissa. They were going to take all the weapons, but he wanted her to pick a weapon first.

"Okay. I think I've got a pretty good idea of how this works. Still, I'll stay behind you, and I won't shoot unless I have to."
Rissa was still nervous about having to fire at anything, dead or otherwise, but she felt safer knowing that she could use the weapon properly now. If they were careful, and very lucky, they could get back out of the building without anything else finding them. So far they had been lucky, but they still had to get back to the truck and then out of the town without being eaten alive or found by her pursuers.
"So are we going to wait, or are we going to make a break for it?:"
She strapped on the vest as she spoke, able to figure out how to properly place it on. The straps made it fairly straight forward as to how it was supposed to go on.

"No time like the present to get the hell out of... well hell", said Cameron. He pulled on the police vest and strapped it down. Then he pulled all the ammo out of the locker and put it in his bag and pulled that on over his shoulders. Then he took the gun belt and slide the sidearm that Rissa didn't take into the and fastened around his waist. Lastly, he took the shotgun and slung it by its strap over his shoulder.
It was a lot of weight to carry, but since zombies didn't run, Cameron figured the even with the half mile walk back to the truck, if they kept a brisk quiet pace, that it wouldn't be too bad. He nodded to Rissa to make sure she was ready. At the last second, he took two water bottles out of his bag and gave one to Rissa and then drank the other one.
"Okay, let's go."
Cameron crept out of the office and towards the front door. As he approached he noticed two things. First, none of the walkers were there. They had moved up the street about half a block.
Second, and more concerning, their gas cans were gone. He looked back at Rissa.
"Have you seen our gas cans?"
Before she could answer, a shot rang out from down the street, striking the frame of the door just 2 feet from Cameron's head.

"No! They found me!"
It was obvious to Rissa who had taken the gas cans, and who was shooting at them. The Branded had clearly taken them, and were going to kill Cameron and take her back to the compound. She ducked into the door frame and kept low. The sounds of gunfire were going to draw the undead to wherever it was coming from, and that meant if they stayed quiet, they'd be safe.
"I'm not going back. I'm not going back. They're not taking me back..."
She had squeezed herself into a small ball and covered her head, keeping out of danger as much as she could.

Cameron ducked down and crawled away from the door. He ended up behind the front desk again. From that angle, the people shooting at them from down the street wouldn't be able to get a good shot at them. Rissa was losing it, balled up and crying to herself. Cameron knew that she would need help getting out of this.
They did have one thing going for them, however. The person(s) shooting at them were drawing a lot of attention of the undead to them. Soon the shoot had intensified and less shots were coming their way.
"Rissa", Cameron hissed at her, trying to get her attention. He pointed to the rear of the building, indicating that they should go out the back. He crawled toward the door and about 5 feet from the door, the handle began to shake. Someone was trying to get in. Great, thought Cameron. Shooting at us up front to run us into an ambush out back.
It looked like they were trapped, until Cameron looked up and saw the service hatch that led to the roof. Unlike the gas station that was a stand alone building, the station was on the corner of a string of attached buildings. If they could get to the top of the station, they could climb from roof to roof and hopefully either get away or get a better shooting position.
"Rissa, I need you to stay with me", Cam said, grabbing her by the shoulders so that he could look into her eyes. "We are going to climb up to the roof and jump from roof to roof all the way down the block. If we are quiet and stay down, we should be past them. Can you do this?"

Rissa was snapped out of her panic by Cameron's shaking. She blinked, and nodded in understanding. There was a way to escape, but she had to do what he told her. He needed her to not be a victim right now, and if she wanted to survive she was going to have to pull herself together.
"I can. I can do this."
She uncurled herself, and looked at the ceiling entrance, making her way to the base of the ladder. They had to get moving, or they weren't going to make it out of the station alive. She started climbing, keeping her eye on the hatch above.

Cameron released Rissa and then, not knowing what to do, gave her a hug. "We are going to get out of here, I promise."
Then feeling awkward, he turned and headed for the stairs. Unlike the gas station, the station actually had a small set of stairs that they could pull down to access the roof. Cameron pulled the stairs down and began to climb up the stairs. At the top, he popped the small door open and crawled out on top of the roof. As soon as Rissa made it up, he would pull the stairs up behind him.
Taking a minute to catch his breath, Cameron listened to the gunshots. They had tapered off a bit and sounded farther away. Risking a look over the edge, he couldn't see the shooters, but he saw a large crowd of zombies all heading toward one of the shops near the Gas Station. Cameron realized that had they stayed in the gas station, they would have been overrun by now. He would be dead, Rissa would be back to the compound.

Rissa looked over the edge of the roof as well, and saw that their last hiding place was completely under siege. So they had looked there first. She was glad they had decided to go to the police station earlier. But then they had a big problem...they needed the gas. Cameron's vehicle was out of fuel, and what they had salvaged was in the Branded's hands.
"Maybe we can find whoever got the gas, and ambush them? I mean they had to leave it somewhere or they are still carrying it around. We can get it back."

Cameron took another deep breath. Down below, the crashing of the back door breaking in was very audible.
"We got to go", he said, grabbing his stuff and headed the building adjacent to the sheriff's office. He wanted to be far away from the building before someone got to the roof. As he reached the "lip", he saw that it was only hip level, so he hurdled it at a slow jog. Not stopping, he continued to make is his way up the roof, which was a three story building. There was an emergency stairwell was attached to the wall so Cameron began to climb.
Gunshots sounded below and they were getting closer, meaning either the group was moving towards the office or they were getting closer to the group. As he cleared the roof to the 3 story building, he looked down the block. There were only three more buildings attached before they were running on the street. The rest of the buildings were two stories tall.
Stopping, Cameron knew that this is where they would need to make a stand. If the ground on the roofs behind them got above them, then they wouldn't be able to hide.
"We will hold up here", he said to Rissa, setting his backpack down. "If we get caught out in the open, we're dead."
Cameron downed the rest his bottle of water and started to check the weapons. "We can't wait for both groups to attack at once. If we can attack our followers first, then we can deal with the ones down on the street."
Cameron pulled out his revolver and the M&P, making sure that they were both loaded. At his feet laid his rifle, loaded with the other magazines ready to go. He put the shotgun by Rissa as she checked her gun. "Do you want to shoot, or just load the weapons?"

"I don't think I'd be good at loading. But I can shoot."
Rissa knew her hands were shaking, but she kept the gun in front of her anyways, pointed towards the way they had come. She was laying flat, she supposed it made her a smaller target. She could feel sweat building on her forehead, and she tried to keep her breathing even, the pit of her stomach knotting as she felt fear creeping into her mind.

After Rissa confirmed that she would shoot, he looked around for coverage. On the floor that they were on, there were two commercial sized air conditioner units. They would provide the best cover for them. Cameron pointed to the one farther away from the front of the building.
"Hide behind that one. Don't shoot until we have them all up here. I want to catch them off guard. I'll shoot first and then when I duck down to reload, I want you to shoot. I don't care if you hit anything, I just want them to dive for the floor while I reload. Then when you duck down, I'll start shooting again."
Cameron's voice was ragged. Though he had killed zombies and played 1st person shooter games, he had never really shot another human before. He hoped that Rissa didn't see, but he was scared and it took effort to control his shaking hands.
Down below, the gunshots slowed down. They were either running out of targets, or running out of ammo.
The stair well leading up to the roof, shook as someone or someones were climbing up to their roof.
Cameron quickly grabbed everything and hid behind the air conditioning unit.
