Leaning against the side of a tree, Arcian balanced himself on a high branch in a tall oak, looking at the sunrise. From up here, we could see all around, and get that rush from being up high enough to keep his mind active. He was feeling fine now, and only focused on making sure the area was safe. It been at least five or six hours since the others went to sleep, and Arcian had been awake all night just getting a feel for the surroundings. During the night, he had been inside Vics garage shop, noticing that it used to be a market for repairing bikes and the such. Mustve been a successful business if he had this much stuff, he could build anything he needed to in there. But his pride and joy was parked outside, the Kawasaki, that would be handy for getting around the woods. Jumping down from the tree, Arcian hung onto another branch for a second before letting go onto the ground. This put a lot of strain on his arm, but he shook it off, and walked back to the house from the clearing.
~~~
As the day approached hours later, Vic had opened his eyes to the look of sunlight pouring in through the holes in the blinds. Standing up from the futon, he stretched his arms and back, yawning from the passable sleep. Since nobody was making any noise, he assumed everyone had been still sleeping. It only made sense. Walking over to the main window, Vic opened up the blinds, letting the whole room light up with the suns rays. However, as he done this, there had been some rattling coming from the kitchen area. Curious to see who was in there, Vic walked across the hall, and then entered the kitchen. "I put some coffee on for you, babe." Vic stared up with tired, but wide eyes. Because he was staring into the face of his Wife, standing in the kitchen. Vic dropped the photograph which was still in his hand, shattering it on the ground.
Gunning his eyes open, Vic sat up on the couch in a daze, stepping off to put his foot into a pile of broken glass. Quickly pulling his feet back up, he saw the paper photo and the broken frame. Taking off his sock on that foot, he looked at the large cut in his heel, grabbing for a napkin on the coffee table and using it to wipe the blood clean. But just then, he heard footsteps coming from upstairs, and quickly put his sock back on his foot, and began to clean the glass up with a nearby broom.
Nina dreamed, she knew, but couldn't remember what. Probably something frightening since when she awoke, her hand was clenching the sheet beneath her. With a start, she rose up off the bed, looking around in a flurry. Where am I? And then it all came rushing back. Vic, Claire, the zombies and the crazed woman, and the new man Arcian. Her breath slowly began to slow down before she got off the bed, feeling incredibly refreshed. Though she had not slept long enough in her opinion.
Not knowing if Claire was awake, she tip toed to the bathroom, feeling on her jeans. They were not quite dry yet. Wincing in an uncomfortable way, she slid one leg in after the other and buttoned them. Ugh. She descended the stairs back down to the first floor to see Vic sweeping something up. She gave a frown as well as a tilt of her head.
"Make a mess?" She, herself, felt a mess. She wondered if Vic had any of his wife's old clothes, but she didn't dare ask. She had seen the picture before she went to bed, and could have sworn she caught him glancing at it every once in awhile. Sore spots weren't fun to pry open, she knew that.
Vic jolted his eyes toward Nina for a second, who had been standing in the living room, questioning the glass on the floor. Quickly, he snatched the paper photograph up from the floor, grasping it in his hand, then continued to sweet up the glass. "Oh, this? Yeah, mustve kicked it over last night. Its nothing to worry about..." As he actually looked up to see Nina with focus now, he could see the fairly dirty cloths she had. Of course, his no better, and he always had a change in his room. As for the woman, she more then likely had nowhere to go now, and had no change of cloths unless found elsewhere. Finishing up the clean, Vic scooped the glass into the garbage, and then tossed the broom into the corner. Looking at his open door on the first level, he saw the dresser reflecting from the mirror. "...If you need any a change of cloths, you welcome to take anything. Not like ill be needed it, right? I know, shes not around anymore, she wouldnt want me to just hold onto them. Theyll fit you perfectly, Nina. So please, just take them, keep them in you SUV, and youll never be stuck for clean clothes. Thats... What she wouldve wanted... Anyways..." Vic looked at Nina, keeping his emotions to himself. He didnt want to talk about it right now, it wasnt the time, but he wanted to be ready for if Nina did want to talk about it. Maybe it would get things off his chest. Vic then slipped the photo into the back of his jeans, where it would stay until he needed it again. This is the first thing I remember, now it's the last thing left on my mind. Afraid of the dark, do you hear me whisper to an empty heart? Replaced with paranoia? Where do we go after we're gone? Life's temporary like new years resolutions. Why is this hard, do you recognize me? I know I'm wrong, but I can't help believing. ~~~ Arcian stood on the doorstep of the house, resting his rifle behind his head, leaving comfortable against the house. He could hear people moving inside, and then some chatter between the couple. Pushing himself off from the wall, he slung his rifle from his shoulder, and then stood outside of the door. Taking a deep, clear breath, he smiled, and then entered the house, careful trying to keep his actions low. Closing the door behind him, he he stood on the doormat. "Oh snap, um. Please, continue. Didnt wanna spoil a moment, ya get me?" Waiting respectfully for the blond to answer, Arcian walked into the hallway, and then just began to quietly look around the house, keeping out of the other groups business.
In all honesty, she was truly glad that he offered up the clothing. The torn shirt didn't fit very well, leaving her stomach bared from the rip and made her feel open and vulnerable. Even now, she tugged at the hem, her brows furrowed. She could tell something was bothering him though. Even if he hadn't meant to, she could sense a change in his voice. And his body language changed as well. Closed in, quiet. From her previous line of profession, it was easy to tell.
Nina stood quietly where she was, simply watching him sweep up the glass from the picture he had knocked over in his sleep. Something was eating at him, and she doubted it was him just knocking over the picture. Never having had really good social skills, Nina began to ask what was wrong. Before she could utter a word however, Arcian stepped into the house and spoke. Her blue eyes followed him before he slipped from sight further into the house.
"He's really weird..." The look on Vic's face hadn't really changed from its veiled mask state. Nina gave a soft sigh before saying,
"Thank you for offering the clothes. I'm hungry... What about you?" Her questions, and change of clothes, could wait til after she broke her fast. And what a fast it had been. Figuring he would follow after her, in his own time, Nina headed to the kitchen and immediately grabbed up a bottle of water they had chucked from the grocery store. Small boxes of granola bars and single bowls of cereal. Cans of spaghetti-o's. Some that contained various fruits and vegetables. Nina chose a single bowl of cereal and tore of the plastic topping. She tilted up her bottle of water, pouring some onto the cereal. It tasted awful.
She ate in silence for a moment, feeling naked without her gun stuffed down the back of her jeans. And her hair was down for once in weeks. It felt strange, as did being in a house with people she barely knew. Nina had never been a people-person. The closest she ever came to another was when she was massaging others. And now she was staying with Victor and his daughter and eating their well found food. A pang of guilt ran through her heart, and she bit her lip slightly, and was surprised when she drew blood. Damned chapped lips.
Agreeing with Nina, Vic nodded. The man Arcian was a little wierd, probably growing up in a different enviornment. He was BSAA, that said a lot about a person. Regardless of how suspicious he was, the guy wouldnt hurt them, and could certainly handle whatever was thrown at him. He looked like a hardened soldier, yet retained a sense of humor, and an obvious insight on the ladies. Hearing Nina speak about food, Vic spoke out in a light tone, happy that she took inititive to go into the kitchen first, feeling at home. "I havent eaten much in the last few days, seeing all this food, I dunno where to start..." Entering the kitchen soon after Nina, Vic first grabbed a few granola bars, and then a bottle of water. But this wasnt for him, this was for Claire.
Walking back into the living room, he lay them out on the table, and then moved upstairs. Seeing Arcian snooping around through the cabinate in the bathroom, Vic ignored him, and then entered his daughters room. But to his fear, the little girl hadnt been in bed. Quickly looking around the room, opening the closet, and even looking outside of the window, he could find any trace of her. Frantically running back out into the hallway, yet retaining a sense of calmness, she was standing with Arcian in the bathroom. The two of them had been talking. Vic walked down the hallway, and thats when Claire spoke out. "Is this Uncle Tommy? You told me he would come visit someday. He helped me get my toothbrush, look!" Giving a glance at Arcian, Vic chuckled to himself, as the man smirked. "Well after your done with that, you can come down and have some breakfast, okay?"
Walking back down the steps, Vic moved into the kitchen, seeing Nina sitting at the table eating her own meal. Snatching a can of spegettios and a knife from the counter, he sat down beside Nina, and then opened up the can with a sharp pry. Inspecting the orange colored, animal shaped noodles inside, Vic deemed them to be safe to eat from his own experiences. He too wasnt a man of social skills, he only made a good father, that was it. So it was time for some business, ending the smalltalk. "Do you have any plans? Claire and I are going to be staying here at the house for the rest of the month. Your welcome to stay with us, if you want to be a part of the small family. I would love it if you stayed, you seem to have been pretty good with Claire while I was away. But, its up to you, im not gonna make you stay. Im sure you have other plans, thats all im saying..."
~~~
"Sooooo! What kind of music do you listen to?!" Arcian playfully spoke out to the young girl while she brushed her teeth. "Vlack eye flease, uhhhh" Claire answered, mouth full of toothpaste. "...Well whatya know, me too!" He had been talking on and on with the girl, until she was ready to put her toothbrush away. She explained to him that it always went in the cup on the top shelf. "But you cant even reach it, you too small, shortie." Arcian spoke out, jokingly. "Yeah I know that stupid, but its just... Thats where mommy always put it for me..." Arcian bit his lip, but still kept on his grin, popping the toothbrush into the right place. "There we go, then. Now, how about we got get something to eat, huh? Come on, show me where you sit!" The little girl nodded, grinning her pearly white teeth before running into the hallway, leading Arcian downstairs to the others.

The guilt continued to wrap its greedy, cold fingers around her heart and squeezed. Her teeth gritted slightly as she chewed on the flakes of her frosted flakes. It wasn't her favorite cereal. Nina swallowed the food in an almost painful manner. She hadn't even been able to bring herself to smile when he mentioned all the food. When he entered the kitchen, Nina was nearly done with her small bowl of cereal. Upon hearing his words, the blond put the bowl down and met his gaze.
"I feel like I've walked into some waking dream. You and Claire have a good set up here. I kinda feel like I'm intruding." Which was the truth. They didn't know her, or what she was like. She didn't know what happened to them before this and how on earth they had survived for this long. Up until about a week ago, she had been sheltered and protected. Nina longingly thought of home. Did they close the gates back up yet? She gave a soft sigh before hearing small little footsteps racing down the stairs, and she only had to guess it was Claire. And Arcian.
"But if I want to survive... I think I'll stick around." Nina had no intentions of dying anytime soon, and she knew that she could help protect them and possibly they her. Her eyes flickered back between the two men and finally let out the question she'd been hoping to ask for some time now.
"How did the infection come back?" She had heard rumors in the base before, of course, but none of the army-esque individuals ever answered those types of questions. Only that it happened and they must remain safe. She knew Umbrella was no more; that had been big news for everyone all over the planet. But something had to have happened, and Nina practically demanded to know.

"Intruding? Now, I took you here. As for Arcian, well... Well, just know that your welcome to stay here for as long as we have enough food. Whats not to say we cant just go scrounge up some more, huh? Its safe out here, your right. Nothing will attack us, the infected are all far away from this place. A few of them do happen to come around, I can take care of them, dont worry about that." This was true, there was nothing to worry about here. The only thing they did have to worry about was if other people came looking for shelter, he wouldnt be able to take them all in. Or psychopaths looking to take what they cant get without killing. Vic had dealt with them before, but he much rather turning a weapon on a zombie then a human being.
Claire had entered the room, and jumped up into her seat alongside the window at the table. It was the one that had a little booster, because she could barely even reach the edge of it without feeling like she was hiding. Vic looked at her with a grin, and then listened to Ninas question about the outbreak. This was one that he had never bothered to ask himself, or try to find out. It didnt really matter how it happened, but now that they were thinking about it, he was getting a little curious himself. "Well, its not something anybody would really know. The military might have a better idea, but they could be just given orders, right?" So in turn, Vic had no clue how it started. But then Arcian opened his mouth out of the blue.
"...A terrorist attack on Raccoon City. Who and why are still being discussed. Only reason I know is because I work with the BSAA, and im entitled to this kind of stuff before missions. It was terrorism, some other country wanted to make the United States suffer, and started up the outbreak all over again. It was no accident at a lab, or was a form of bio-terrorism. A slower death then just dropping a nuke, and its untraceable, unprotected..." Arcian could see the confusion on Ninas face everytime he mentioned the BSAA, not all Civilians would know who they were, just the unlucky ones. "...And the BSAA, theyre a central intelligence investigation team formed to counter attack the virus. Were soldiers sent to help fight, based on our missions."

As both men spoke, Nina smiled over at Claire for a moment. The little girl was busy watching her father and the man who had come down the stairs with her. A terrorist attack? For revenge maybe... The US had screwed everyone over, after all. Nina pushed her hair back from her face, and gazed out the window as Arcian finished speaking. It was a lot to take in, and much more to think over. But in truth, though she had desperately wanted to know, it didn't matter anymore. The s*** had hit the fan, and now everything was falling apart. But she wouldn't.
"No offense, but this has been going on for a good long while. Please tell me your BSAA has been working on some kind of, I don't know, solution or cure." Of course, Nina had no clue where she was going with that strain of thought. She knew next to nothing about the infection and virus itself. Only that it caused, well, this. And even if there was a cure, what did it matter now? Nothing could ever be the same. Plus, what she had asked the man was probably confidential or he didn't even know. After a moment, Nina switched her gaze over to Victor, wondering if he was as confused as she was.

Vic had just been listening to the two speak. Whatever Nina asked was something he himself wanted to hear the answer to. The questions were pretty well rounded, but his guess was that it wasnt something Arcian could, or would say. To think of a cure for the infection was silly, at least back in 1998. Now they would have had time to research it, maybe even develop one, with the technology they had these days. If Arcian was BSAA, shouldnt he be with a quad or a unit, or something?
"A cure, she says. Chica, the BSAA doesnt deal with that sort of thing. The only cure to use would be a few bullets, and hell, we got lots of them. Killing them is the only solution, really. We do have camps setup around the USA, through, even in Europe, and Africa. For the longterm, no, theres no hope for stopping all of this. For the short term, were gonna try and do it one bullet at a time!" Arcian spoke out. It was the only thing he could say for sure, good ol American spirit. Nodding his head, he looked at Vic, seeing that he had a question. He was just trying to figure out how to ask it. "So, do you have a... Team, then? Why are you working on your own?"
Now there was two things Arcian could say to answer this. One, simply, theyre all dead. Or two, that he couldnt return to base for reasons of his own. It was just a matter of whether or not he could trust these two. As of right now, things seemed pretty solid. Arcian seemed welcome, for the most part, in Vics home. But the girl, she still gave off vibes to him, there was something about her that told him there was going to be a lot of trust issues. However, he would work his magic, and try to fit in the best he could. Putting on a grin, and not the kind that actually gave the effect that he was happy, Arcian spoke out. "Theyre dead, and backups not coming anytime soon..." He bluntly spoke out.

After he answered her question, though in a most patronizing way, Nina got up from her chair and put the plastic container that had held her cereal on the counter. She kept her back to the room as Arcian also answered Vic's question. Yeah, look what your bullets got you, she thought to herself. All of his team, whoever they had been, were dead. And he was here with them. To stay? She wasn't sure. On a happier note, at least to Nina, her lip had stopped bleeding. Using the tip of her finger, she dabbed it into the open water bottle and pressed it against her lips. The cooled water felt good on her lips.
"Well I don't know about you, but my bullets are almost gone. Besides the clip in my gun, I only have one." Nina turned toward them once more, leaning back against the counter with her arms crossed over her stomach, hiding the rip in her shirt. She didn't enjoy the extra feeling of vulnerability around this stranger. It wasn't that she didn't think he would try to harm her, or the people she was now apparently living with. It just made her unnerved. Nina glanced over at Claire who had fallen quiet as well. It was as if the man had just told them all that Halloween was being skipped this year. She nearly laughed at the irony of it. Zombies and other monsters WOULD be walking around on Halloween now, and had been for over a decade now.
Not exactly waiting for an answer, Nina headed out of the kitchen and up the stairs back to where Vic's room was. She was guessing that he had never moved his wife's clothes. And now would be a perfect time as any to go through them.

As Nina left the room, Vic was wondering if she was alright, but then thought maybe she should have some time to herself. Seeing as she was going into his room, Vic was fine with her in there, more then likely just going into change into whatever she could find from his wifes drawer. Seeing the door close over, he looked back to Arcian, and then spoke out, keeping on the ammunition topic. "Yeah, all I have is my handgun, and its fresh out. That was the one thing I could never get my hands on in Raccoon City, everything had been stolen from the gunstores already. For the last awhile, ive been building my own weapons, modifying baseball bats with nails, simple stuff thats effective against the undead." Claire knew what her daddy was talking about. She remembered him even putting a chainsaw on his bike, but it didnt work out like it planned.
Arcian laughed to himself at what Vic said, building his own weapons? That was clever, very clever. He had seen the baseball bat in action, and it had barbed wire wrapped around it, creative. Suppose that was one thing that Arcian never had, the ability to rely on anything other then his guns. It worked, and he had enough ammunition to last him. But he felt a little out of place, like they came from two worlds. His was the kind were Vic and Nina were just civilians trying to survive, and Arcians were he was a soldier on the field trying to make sure everyone stayed alive. Didnt work out too well, thats for sure. He felt as if he owed these guys for something, maybe it was just his way of helping out, but Arcian had an idea.
"I think I know what I can do to help both of you. Im gonna run out for the day. Umm, it was nice meeting you. And you too, Claire! Vic, if im not back by nightfall, tell Nina not to wait up for me. Kay?" Arcian spoke out in a funny manor, it was just his style. Grabbing his gun from the wall, he slung it around his shoulder, and then left the house, jogging into the woods.

The still somewhat tired woman rummaged through the dresser and the closet, sliding a few plain tops from the hangars and numerous pairs of jeans. Within the dresser she found pairs of jogging pants and socks. Socks, socks galore. Nina even pilfered from the dresser a couple of bras. Nina laughed to herself without meaning to. She felt like a creepy person, going through another's belongings this way. She knew the lady was dead and gone, but it was strange nonetheless.
Nina even scored a pair of running sneakers that was slightly snug on her toes. She dared not complain though. Anything was better than those gargantuan boots. She would rather her feet be a little sore after running from the infected, than tripping and falling to her death. After pillaging, Nina closed the dresser drawers and the closet door and then wondered where she was supposed to put them. She would absolutely refuse, put her foot down, to continue to sleep in Victor's room. Nina had agreed to stay, and that didn't make her a guest anymore in her eyes. With that thought in her head, the blond went back downstairs and peeked around the corner at the father and daughter.
"Where am I gonna be sleeping? I would.. I'd like to put the clothes and the things I had with me, ya know, near me." She felt silly explaining herself, but Nina often stumbled on her words. Nina especially wanted her gun and backpack near her. Maybe she would even start using that journal; get her thoughts out there to the world if anything were to ever happen. She then realized Arcian wasn't in the kitchen any longer. Her brows furrowed before trying to look in the living room.

It was really short notice, but maybe the guy had somebody contact him while they were all talking, through an earpiece or something. Vic shook his head when Arcian left, but then just sat back down at the table, and watched Claire eating her granola bar. It took her a long time to get through one of them, two would be more then enough for her little stomach. As she swallowed a piece, she spoke out to Vic. "Is he coming back, daddy? Hes really nice, I hope he does come back." Vic smiled to his daughter, not really sure what to tell her. But, he conjured up a word, and an idea. If the guy said he would be back, he would be back, sometime tonight. "Yeah, dont worry. Im sure hell be back. Dont you worry..."
At this time, Nina had came back to the kitchen, and then asked Vic where should would be sleeping. If she was going to be staying here, it would make sense to have her own things inside the house and out of her SUV, but space was a little tight in the small house. Claire for one needed her own bed, that was her room, too. As for Vic, had one option left. "You can sleep in my room, take your things in there, ill help you." But as he stood up from the table, Nina spoke out, protesting that she couldnt stay in his room. She was really keeping it on a certain level, and made her point that she didnt want to sleep there, as it was his room, not hers.
Vic understood, perfectly. However, it wasnt that kind of matter. "I dont mind the futon. It folds out, and its a perfect size, I would actually prefer it. So please, stay in my room, I insist." The two of them could argue about I all day, but the fact of the matter was, Vic couldnt stay in his room. He wanted to be outside in the living room at nights, so he would have first thoughts if something or someone did break into the house. He could be right there when it happened, to protect his daughter and the people in the house. Or, maybe that was just the excuse he gave himself to keep him mind of the other reasons, the one prefered to not even think about.
"Its fine, really..." He smiled, and then walked out of the kitchen area to get the rest of Ninas things from her SUV for her. Claire had finished up her breakfast, or whatever you would call it at one in the evening, and then threw her garbage away. She slurped down the bottle of water with one of her fancy straws from the kitchen counter, and then looked at Nina. The little girl was too young to really understand the grownup matters, but she cheerfully spoke out. "Daddy doesnt sleep alone in his room no more, not since mommy left. Are you going to be staying with us? Were not used to havin guests here, itll be awesome! Did you know daddy builds things? I should show you his garage, theres a really cool bike in there hes working on, but we have to ask him if its okay to show you, though."

She argued back just as fully as he did with her, brows knitted and all. Finally, Nina admitted defeat and simply quieted down. She couldn't stop herself from giving Vic a look, however. She watched him exit the kitchen and head out to her SUV. As soon as he had his back to her, she stuck out her tongue in an almost child-like manner. Just then, she remembered Claire sitting at the far end of the table. Nina glanced over her shoulder at the young girl and gave a half hearted smile. With what Claire said, it dawned on Nina as to why Victor refused to sleep in his own room.
Nina managed a larger smile when she mentioned showing her the garage. Without saying a word, the blond nodded before stepping around the kitchen and watching Vic bring in her jug of water and a few of her other odds and ends. She moved passed him and grabbed her pack.
"Claire wants to show me something in the garage." Nina gave the girl a sideways glance before winking.
"Well... Is it okay?" Nina swung one strap of her backpack on her shoulder, awaiting an answer. Claire had started to clamber down off of her booster chair, giving her father that puppy dog look so many children excel at. If he didn't cave then and there, something was wrong with him.

"Something in the garage?" Vic asked, looking towards Claire. He had to think for a moment what she could mean, what was in the garage that would spark her interest? Thats when it hit him. Claire was already really excited, and couldnt wait to show somebody, just as any kid would. "Oh, right. Yeah, I dont see why not. Look out for her, will ya?" She gave Vic an honest look, he knew that Nina would keep an eye on her, and the surroundings. She wasnt at all stupid, and certainly not reckless. Laying the jug of water onto the kitchen table, Vic watched the other two exit the house, closing the door behind them. He laughed to himself lightly at Claire, she was always excited when there was new people around. Once she got used to being around them, letting go was always the hard part.
~~~
"Its in here, lemme open the door!" Claire pulled the garage door open using her body weight, until it was full up to the ceiling. Inside was a very large area, more then half the size of the whole house. Various tools, workbenches, parts, and other appliances lined the walls, leaving the center open for parking Vics bike and other things. There had been lots of other things around. For instance, a whippersnipper that had the steel blades replaced with ones from machetes, a beta version of a nailgun that would be automatic in due time, and a great number of other unfinished projects. However, what Claire was interested in was at the back of the shop. Lifting up a mat tiled over something, a smaller pink dirt bike could be seen now. It had a few missing parts, but everything that was together had been brand new. "Look at that! Daddy says I can drive it when im older, so he doesnt have to hold me when we drive his. Isnt that cool?!"
