Since I figured this needs its own space for people to talk about. Dunno who all played it, and who all enjoyed it, but for those who have, feel free to chime in here. Hard to give spoilers, cause most of it wouldnt mean anything to somebody who hasnt even gotten to that point yet anyways.
With brave practice in the past come surgical victory in the future. I got to one of the bigger ships, guess it was one of the main mission things, and flawlessly captured the Etherial alive. No casualties, and only two of my members got shot. I switched out two of my Alloy Cannons with Plasma Rifles, and fitted those units with Scopes so I could get the extra aim needed to pull it off without taking heavy damage. They said this was one of the harder missions, and running in to that Etherial thing, I thought I was boned. But I got em. Im sooooo proud, this is the most rewarding game ive ever played.
I highly encourage people to buy this game. Me and a bunch of other people said it just wasnt their kind of game, and I get that, since its made by the same people that do Civilization. Those games can be very slow and tedius, but its very rewarding. Working your way up from just four soldiers with shotguns and assault rifles, all the way to Psionically Enhanced Soldiers with Power Armor and Plasma Rifles. The other Civ games took you from the stone ages all the way to Modern Military. This game takes you from Modern Military to a future you cant even imagine possible in a turn based strategy game. Sorta has a Mass Effect meets Star Craft feel to it. Go buy this game, do it.

I feel it has a star craft meets civilization meets any squad based game. But I have only watched it played and am looking forward to playing it myself. I love customizing the guys, giving them wicked armor and wicked weapons and kicking alien butt.

You want more civilisation in your Xcom, try naming a soldier Sid Meier (although this will disable trophies for that campaign so use it only for funs)
Anyone else besides me having china drop out of the funding nations every game?
Damn fine game though, little easier to manage than the original Xcom, though I do miss some of the old options like different ammo types. Here's hoping for a sequel in the style of Xcom Terror of the Deep

Hah, yeah, you can name your people a bunch of different things and they all get different abilities, never messed with it yet though. Ive never had China drop out though, im near the end just doing some cleaning up, and ive only lost four countires. Austrailia, Argentina, South Africa, and Nigeria. Got knows why Brazil and Eqypt are sticking around, with the rest of their brothers and sisters alien test subjects around them.
The thing I love is no matter how many times you start a new game, your gonna start with a different Squad. My first six were Four Assaults, a Support, and a Sniper. Everybody has different combinations for classes, each that have different selections for their abilities, and have their own strategies for each type of alien contact. Buddy and I are at the same part, with the same winning, but have totally different playstyles.
My question is once I have this one thing that lets me do this one thing that says theres no going back, does that mean my game will end, or do you get to keep playing afterwards? Im tempted to just keep playing now and not do that mission, cause I wanna get all my squaddies up, satalittes over everywhere, all the research and projects built, ect. Is that an okay thing to do, for anyone thats gotten to the end? I try avoiding spoilers, but the story isnt really that massive, just a bunch of space guys killing aliens. You know how it ends, you kill them all or they kill you, lmfao.

When it says there's no turning back that is the final mission before credits/start screen/reloading. It's perfectly fine to do a bunch of whatever you want before you start it. It won't go anywhere.
4 Assault squaddies? Man that's gotta be something to do with easy. Both of my playthroughs left me with the impression you could only have one Assault at one time, considering I was waiting yonks for another Assault squaddie to come along and it wasn't until my only Assault died that another did. At least I thought that until finally a second Assault was dropped in right at the end of the game. 4 Assault would be some sort of sick dream. The X-rays would just drop their weapons, board their ships and say f**k that before flying off.

My favorite are the assault guys(The big guys with the rocket launcher, right?). They remind me of Gears of War characters.

Naw, those folks are the Heavies. It's absolutely essential to have one launcher for big ass splash damage. It's just a shame the only launcher upgrade arrives so late in the game.
Assault are the crazy bastards who can use shotguns/go Rambo.

Okay so my favorite is the Heavies because they are awesome I don't like the shotgunners much.

Hahaha, buddy told me I just got reallllly lucky that I had all four assaults. I like being able to press in when needed. My last Sniper just got killed on an Abduction mission, but I got another sniper with some changes in the Abilities, so its even better. Im goin for my third Psionically enhanced soldier right now though. Mindf**k whatever comes at me, ill be able to control one guy while I make the head of other explode. All the whole I got a Sniper on lookout, Alloy Cannons up front for reaction shots, and a heavy to lay down suppressing fire.
Life is good.

Man, getting another Assault was great. My first Assauly was like a mentor to my new one. She looked up to him like a brother. So then when he was killed in combat she went on a vengeful bloodlust crusade, becoming the first biotic human and taking it straight to the high overseer.

Everyones got their stories, one thing I love about the game. Imagination is the best.

Always two snipers, one to cover the other moving on alternate turns, a heavy with different skills depending on the mission, two support troops (at least one primarily as a medic) and the last slot I tend to fill in with a rookie to get them trained up, of course newbies take point. Rarely have any truck with assault troops. I was lucky enough to have two complimenting heavies from Scotland though, the Proclaimers. So, any hated alien moves that really messed your squad up at any point? Most of mine are accidentally triggered berserker mutons that decide to plow through half a map worth of cover and open up another route for their buddies. Plus elite floaters, they're just tools of the highest order. lparchive.org/X-COM-UFO-Defense/mandatory reading mojos, an epic narrative lp of the original xcom

I find Beserkers are a bit of a joke, you can burn their turns while you play. When he rages out after an attack he'll go after that squadmate, shoot him again and both his turns are gone. Always just stands there for me.
The worst of the worst I've had is Terror missions. You need to kill the zombies before you kill the Chrysalids. Kill all of the Chrysalids first and the next zombie available will burst into another Chrysalid. It's ramps the tension right up juggling killing Chrysalids and zombies, especially when all the Chrysalids do is run right at you and then have a nasty chance of infecting you.
I can't begin to explain my detestment for Chrysalids. I'd rather take on two Cyberdiscs. I try to setup a sniper way up high with the right perks, he or she can simply one shot off a bunch of Chrysalids before the game even begins.

That's okay I had one energy mofo shoot through a wall and hit one of my guys then the grey faced mofo killed him all from full health in one move while the next move the energy dude shot my sniper squaddie across the map scored a critical hit and killed him. Then the floaters were unhittable.

Ive never had a huge problem until I game across a Sectopod and six berserkers flanking from two directions. Its was on a barge. There was blood. And lots of broken robot parts. That was the biggest struggle ive had, cause thats a lot of stuff comin at you from three angles.
As for the zombie missions, theyre just annoying. My four assaults all have that reaction shot they take when melee enemies get close enough for an alloy cannon blast. So long as we keep formation, we cant be touched, cause all four of them can take those reaction shots as many times as it takes, until things learn to stay where they are. And they cant do that, cause theyre stupid aliens. But everyone has a different strat.
People tell me im running and gunning with all the assaults, but im not, im playing SUPER defense. You get close to me, you die, simple as that. I got a heavy to blow the cover out of the area, so there is no cover for the enemies. Then I get my sniper to take shots off, cause if he kills somebody whos not in cover he takes another shot. Chain them together, and your set. Mix that with holotargetting and assault units up on the front lines, and we can just stay where were at and let the aliens come to us. And lose.
But when it comes to a bomb mission, well, I got a different setup. Bunch of supports with Ghost Armor, rush in and defuse. Then theyre spread out, so when the guys get the drop, they pick them off. Strategic positioning.
