combination of both. it s also a good idea to take some practical courses such as first aid, not so good with zombie bites but good for almost everything else, how to stitch up wounds and such however wont be part of first aid. Another good thing to take is the SAS Survival Handbook. It has detailed information on how to survive in a variety of situations, as well as guides to hunting, skinning, cooking, temporary and more permanent house and basecamp building, first aid, knot tying, and much more. plus its small enough to be put in with the bugout bag and can be bought in paperback form to save on weight.

Theres quite a few books out there worth having. I have a site I go to that pretty much has guides for everything, suggestions on what to take/pack. Very useful information.

Ooooooooops, late response, but yeah.
Mines got odds and ends in it. Military stuff from the service. Small firearm cleaning kit is a thing, medical stuff. Its really only good for certain things, or a month. Its a bag for preparation, not longterm survival, hah.

I'd use Joey's car with my Dead Island driving skills.
In reality, I'm not going to go into specifics, but if I had to narrow it down to three weapons, I'd run with a semi-automatic shotgun (too lazy to decide on the specific shotgun), a handgun with a decent-sized clip, and maybe some sort of melee weapon, but it'd be something long; the further I am from the zombie when I'm killing it, the better.

Magazine*
Try a Spear, Quarter-Staff, or if you like exotic weapons, a Naganata.

Dead Islands driving felt like you had a trunk full of bowling balls. Also you didnt have a steering wheel to begin with.

I would pick a blade-gun because it is easy to carry and useful for lots of things just in case i would take a hanzo katana, it is sharp enough to cut iron maiden into pieces. As handgun i prefer The Colt 1911 is still the champion. Great trigger, accurate, hi-cap, lo-cap, full size, compact and .45 caliber. There is one to suit every need. As machine gun i prefer fad so good night for now.

Hmmm. Interesting question. I've always thought that the best weapon is the one that you have and master. So I'm breaking my down into two sections
For Zombies: Ruger 10-22 - 22LR (I have one and am pretty good with it. Plus I have 1000 rounds of ammo for it and can fire off 100 before I need to reload. Ruger Mark III - 22 LR (Love this gun and good with it over medium distances. Plus little to no recoil) Machete
for Humans (the kind that don't want to play nice): .357 Revolver (I have a S&W 686 that I love) and a S&W 642 snubbie (I prefer to shoot .38 sp from them)
The rest of my handguns, I like, but I would probably barter them off for more ammo.
Of course that is today and tomorrow, it may be a Duece and a Half with a 50 cal mounted to the top of it.

My personal choices would be a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm for my sidearm, a machete for my melee weapon. As for my primary weapon, I prefer a Ruger Mini 14 with a scope.

damn. this thread hasn't been used in a while.
alright people. time to revitalise this thread.
in addition to personal preference of weapons, what equipment or items would you take, and would any item be useful as a melee weapon
For example. i have used a halligan/hooligan tool during my brief time with the rural fire service, and it would be very useful as both a tool for entering places and opening things, and an impromptu bludgeoning weapon.

Oh wow. I believe that the best melee weapon I would take would be a crowbar. Sure,it doesn't have a lot of reach to it,but it is a handy tool in removing barricades and other s*** that requires a crowbar. It could also garuntee a one hit kill if you manage to get close enough and pierce the zombie in the eye if you're fast enough. And for firearms I would take the M1911 Colt and since I prefer shooting from a distance,I'll use the German made Blaser R93 LRS2 sniper rifle.

My F-15GU, dammit.
A battleship.
A nuclear submarine.
Ok, for me, Id go for the SPOND weapon set up, with the shoot and everything that can go with it, including the Wing-Suit. The SPOND blade would be epic. No need for ammo. But, I'd want to be fully trained with the equipment as well. It is useless without proper training. Now that I think of it, we always have problems with ammo. Gonna pass on the idea of a new weapon design. I'll use that, with the suit.

If I was in the navy, a submarine would be the best place to be during any apocalypse. Can detect anything outside, can go to polar regions and chill. Wait out the horses and let them rot to nothing. Let the virus break down over time. Repopulate the planet with the crews of the submarine and other a marines of other navies. That is what would literally happen in this situations
As I am now, of something happened, the very first thing I would do is lay low. Exterminate the house of fleas, close off doors and seal off the windows for bio attack. Turn all AC's off. Get rags and with the gas stove I would boil allot of water and start storing it in the tub as drinking water. For my survival, I would have to execute the dogs, sadly. They attract fleas and would be first infected. If I ever venture outside, I would be very sure to cover all parts of me, including my face. Mosquotoes would be the highest danger, as well as fleas. They can transmit the virus fast. Guns are useless in a zombie apocalypse, unless going after others who are not infected, which would be much more of a threat. I would definitely invest in ALLOT of salt. That would be the very first thing I would snatch up, along with bleach and alcohol, and water. The floors of the house would be salted up hardcore. My carpet and all around the house would be white with it. As long as I have gas and water working, I'd be ok. I would also invest in allot of rice, or pasta, and gasoline for generator. I got blades for anti human use, and slingshot for range, and allot of car ball bearings. Once all blood sucking beings are rotted away, it would be safe to emerge. If anyone survived that, I'd try to link with them and survive.
