while i admit that it is far more likely that a repopulating population would most likely originate from a sea based location, you also have to take into account that the zombies might come not from a fast acting virus like the t-virus, but one that has a long start up, like the zombie plague from the Black Tide Rising book series, which i may add is truly a must read for people like us.

At the university I go to, some of the folks I know who are in the genetics and biology field are into zombie kind of stuff, and they wxplained how the T-Virus could exist, and has possibly been made already, but it degrades too fast for it to actually spread. The virus would have to be transmitted fast or else the virus itself would die, and the degradation of the host would prevent it from spreading. If it was a naturally occurring virus, it would be more effective. It would definately be infectious.
Bacteria are able to consume viruses, and that is something GPEO techs (in the VR-World) would be researching at Scar Creek. Of course, that could also explain why zombies are constantly hungry, and they are also constantly falling apart and decomposing all the time.
The host gets infected, the blood cells try to fight it off, but yet bacteria that craves the dead virus particles also wants in on the action, then the bacteria spreads to other parts of the body, and then the blood becomes poisoned, and the host begins to itch like crazy, not from the bacteria, but from the body trying t replicate more cels to repair the damaged ones. So the virus, like rabies, infects the brain, and the nervous system, and causes the host to increase in cellular replication to counteract the bacteria, so the constant and increased growth of human cells causes the itching also. Basically it is a hardcore war inside he body for control over it. The person goes numb from the production of anti pain chemicals, then hunger increases due to celular growth, as well as constant muscle movement from itching. When the mind is lost, and the cells in the body continue to grow from the bacteria eating away at it, and the virus constantly replicating and taking over the host, the only thing left for the host to do is, feed, and try to maintain its existence. Cross flesh eating bacteria (dying skin, flesh), cancer (replication out of control to compensate for flesh lost to bacteria), rabies (viral take over of mind), and you have a hardcore zombie. And if the bacteria were to carry the replicated virus, it could spread in dirt, the sea, the air, etc. there really would be no true safe place until the virus degrades. To end the virus would mean to end the planet, with a gamma-ray burst.
A consequence of this is the "zombie" would easily spread the virus from a simple scratch, breath, touch, or bite. One mosquito could infect another person just by landing on them. A flea could infect a forest within weeks, as with the raccoon forest. The water supply might be safer than one would think, but just one virus cell is all it takes to infect a pet, or a person drinking it.
Guns can't save anyone from the virus. Maybe a high level bio suit, or a space suit. Starvation would be the next problem, because you would have to expose yourself to the virus to eat or drink. Folks in the space station or in submarines are safe, unless a creature mutates at sea and rips open the submarine, lol. (Space station, best option).

With the whole space station idea,I kind of agree with you. It would be the safest option. But how the hell would that station be built if everyone is infected? Unless the station is built in advance and people had advance warning and they could escape to the space station. But who would be guiding the rockets? How would you get to the station if it's been built at least a year or more before the apocalypse? An elevator of some sorts? Traditional rockets? How?

I would go with a 9mm pistol / semi automatic carbine combination where the magazines work for either weapon. As stated above several times, cut down on needing different ammo types, and spare magazines would work for either weapon. Me personally (not my characters), wouldn't shoot at a zombie unless it was within an escalated range, so a sniper rifle would be out. Again, this is just for me.

Space station crew would not have predicted the apocalypse, they would just be in the right place at the right time. Of course, they would probably die of hunger. The submarine would be the safest realistic place. After a few months, they could surface and chill. As with the space station, no one would get them. They would be forgotten, and if they had communications to anyone, no one could rescue them, because all of the technical skills of rocketry might be lost, unless a submarine crew had aerospace engineers for dealing with the missiles on the submarines.
