"Are you kidding? The chance to even have it again, to have for trade would be well worth it. Think of all the things we could get in exchange! You should have seen what we used to get when the taffy machine was still working..."
Polly remembered it working as a girl, and someone actually making it work for a while. Once they ran out of the ingredients though that was it, no more candy available for trade. Too bad, they used to get a lot of good stuff for it. She wiggled in the woman's lap as she thought about the sweets she hadn't even thought about since she was a child.

"Really? you ran out of ingredients? All taffy needs is boiled suger and butter or vegetable oil. admitably it might be hard to get sand for loam to grow suger beats, not to mention a greenhouse to keep it in a temperate climate."
She grinned slightly at Polly's widening eyes. "What? did you expect me not to learn anything from you this whole time?"

"I just never picked you for a farmer. But I am glad that you've been listening to me when I talk, and watch me when I work."
Polly mentally checked off everything that would be needed to make taffy again. If it had been this simple, she could try it once they got home just to see if it would work. If it did, she could imagine the possibilities.
"Now if we can just get you to stop burning bread, we might make a farmer out of you yet."

"don't kid yourself. I'll never become a competent farmer, besides, I only learned it because I was watching you so closely. or rather, at certain parts of you." she grinned evilly at her. "Besides, It's my turn to cook tonight. you might not want to annoy the chef."

"Very well. But if you need help let me know. I don't mind lending a hand, or anything else you might need."
Polly blushed a little, but knew this was the kind of banter that Katya enjoyed, and she was more than happy to get back at her as well. Turning back to the old woman, she smiled and put out a hand. If they were going to be trading down the road, it only made sense to be polite.
"Sorry, she does that to me more than she should. Just likes to see me blush. I am hoping we can work on something out between our settlements. Is there anything the greenhouse might need, some thing we can provide?"

"not sure, that depends on what you can reasonably provide."

"Corn, whiskey, and flour. We have plenty of grain, and we often trade with settlements around us. I can get you a better list if your settlement has a radio tower. We operate on a pretty broad frequency."
Polly was eager to see if they could make a new trade agreement with another settlement. This would mean a lot to the people back home, and it would keep the council from doing anything stupid with them and their home.
"I don't think the council will be trying to marry you off when we get back home."

"excuse me?" "their council is comprised of senile old farts with delusions of power and grandeur, though most of the rest of the populace are alright."

"Thankfully I stopped er from gelding a few of her suitors. Not sure if they will ever consider trying that again. But, we are well-protected, and we have a nice home and my family close by. There haven't been too many more issues other than that. Thankfully the people are smarter than their leaders, right?"
Polly snuggled in close, letting the woman stroke her hair as they talked. She was fine letting the two catch up, and of course it was nice to be able to work out what the settlement needed, and what they could spare to trade with and for. This wasn't normally something she did, but the opportunity was too good to waste.

"most of them, though there are a few outliers. like that one guy that forgot to watch your back when you got kidnapped before we met. He's lucky I just did that much to him."

"In his defense he was pretty new to runs. I didn't have that much experience before either. I should never have gotten separated from the others. Live and learn right?"

"or in his case, live and learn to hobble." she said evilly.

"I still say that was an overreaction, but you're not going to listen to me are you?"
Polly booped the woman's nose, watching her scrunch up her face in an angry yet adorable way. That was something she really liked about Katya. She was fierce, independent and deadly, and at the same time a thing of beauty.

"I thought that was a no. Now, as much fun as this is, I'm sure we need to get onto other things, and I am sure we have taken up enough of our host's time."
Polly got off the woman's lap and extended a hand to the older woman, a smile on her face at the prospect of making a good trade agreement.
"Thank you for having us, and for thinking about a trade deal. I'm sure once I get a hold of my settlement they will agree that this would be in both our best interests."
