Taylor smiled as Emily shook his hand. He listened to her explain her knowledge of the area before she walked over to the window. Taylor felt himself go nervous briefly, wondering if the zombies outiside, or worse, the large shadow he had seen, were outside that window now, waiting. He rationalized with himself, still hearing their pounding on the main doors.
Taylor then listened to Jim's plan and responded "You're the senior agent, its your call."
Taylor himself had next to no knowledge of the area, nor a GPS, and he trusted Agent Spina's judgement. Taylor nodded as Spina gave him the lead for their next move. He walked over to the first of the hallways after glancing back down towards the main door.
Taylor peered down the first hallway, straining his eyes against the darkness. The penlight in his first aid kit wouldn't help him. He tried to get a feel for the air, finding it stale. He looked up above the entrance. There, inscribed above the passage were the words 'AUX GRANDS HOMMES LA PATRIE RECONNAISSANTE'.
"See those words up there?" he asked, pointing to them as he faced Spina "That means 'To the great men, the grateful homeland'." said Taylor, turning towards the middle passage. "The first passage leads to the crypt, and that means this is the only entrance and exit."
Taylor stepped into the middle passage, this time he felt a bit of a breeze. He walked over to the third one. He didn't get a breeze, but the air wasn't stale.
"The middle way almost definetly leads to an exit of some kind, although its feels like something is open down there. We might have some company that way." said Taylor pointing down the middle passage and walking over to the third. "This one is the variable. It could lead either to an exit or a dead end."
Taylor took a step back, thinking hard. He glanced back at Emily. He'd rather not have her encounter any more zombies, although he had no idea about that third passage. Taylor felt he'd rather go with the more definate choice. If they found some opposition down there, they could handle it. Besides, the middle one was facing northward.
"We'll go the middle route." Taylor said looking at Spina, waiting for his responce.

Jim followed Fote around the antechamber with his eyes.
""See those words up there?" Fote asked, pointing to them as he faced Spina "That means 'To the great men, the grateful homeland'. The first passage leads to the crypt, and that means this is the only entrance and exit."
"The middle way almost definetly leads to an exit of some kind, although its feels like something is open down there. We might have some company that way....We'll go the middle route."
Spina nodded in agreement and jumped down from the column.
"Sounds like a sound judgement," Spina sighed. "It's not like we have much more of an option unless we feel like scaling this thing..."
Nah, that would be too hard. It looked like it would be fun, but Spina didn't have the proper gear. Besides, what were the chances that a 13-year-old girl was qualified in climbing.
Spina spun around as a loud crack came from the front entrance. The zombies were breaking through.
"Well, looks like we decided in the nick of time!" Spina chuckled morbidly. "Alright, I'll take point since I don't want the medic being the first one to get shot or bitten. Emily, you follow next. Fote, you take the rear."
Jim looked at Emily and Fote. A perfect little zombie fighting team they had there.
"No time to lollygag," Jim muttered as the cracking noise became louder and louder.
Once he had checked his 1911, he headed over to the middle hallway and peared down it with his flashlight. It looked clear so far, so he waved the other two forward.

Taylor nodded as Jim moved toward the middle hallway. He turned back towards the door. The cracking noise was filling the room. Gaps were appearing, and the stone blocks were falling off, making lound clomping noises on the marble floor.
'Better hurry. Unless we get outta here soon, we might be fighting off zombies on both sides with a kid in the middle.'
Taylor looked back to Emily as he thought this. He didn't know whether or not Emily understood most of the English, so he figured he'd bring her up to speed.
Taylor walked over to Emily and crouched down, looking up at her. He did this with kids at the hospital, but teenagers were tricky. She might be offended that Taylor was treating her like a little girl, but he figured he might as well try.
"Emily, nous descendons ce couloir du milieu pour essayer et trouver la sortie." Taylor said, putting a gloved hand on her shoulder "Jim ira premier, alors vous, et j'aurai raison derrière vous, approuvez?
For the situation she was in, Emily was acting very strong, especially for her age. Taylor couldn't help but think back to when he was about 15, surviving through the Raccoon City Incident. Emily reminded him of himself, staying calm although death was closing in. It made him feel a bit closer to the girl.
Taylor figured her thoughts were on her family as well as the current situation. He sympathized with that, but he had to get her to focus on this situation to ensure their survival. Taylor knew this, but he didn't quite know what she needed to hear. He figured he'd try to find out what he wanted to hear back then. Until then, he'd keep her close to himself and Jim.

"Emily, we are going down the middle hall to try and find an exit. Jim will go first, then you, and I'll be right behind you, okay?")

Emily raised an eyebrow at Taylor as he knelt down in front of her. She was a bit bothered by it. She understood that he was just being nice and making her feel better, but she hated it when people knelt down and started talking to her in a calming voice. Ninety percent of the time it was either about or followed by bad news.
"Alright, but you don't need to talk to me like I'm a child. Just talk to me as if I was a normal person. I should be able to understand you perfectly if you speak French." Emily said calmly, trying her hardest not to hurt Taylor's feelings.
She turned her head between both of the men and threw one of her thin arms in the air. "Let's go!" she shouted happily in English. This time, she wasn't really scared. She was with two guys that were strong and willing to take her with them on their mission. Plus, being in between them on the trip only made it much much sweeter. She was most definetely ready to go.

Taylor had noticed the cocked eyebrow, and thought she might be one of those teenagers. Her words confirmed this, and Taylor felt a grin creep to his face as she pumped her arm in the air and urged them on in English. Taylor stood back up and walked up behind Emily, waiting for Jim's go.
Taylor realized that Emily had been trying to be delicate with him, correcting him without hurting his feelings. 'She's a woman already..' he thought to himself, shaking his head before glancing back towards the door.
Taylor, however, wasn't all for bringing her with them. She had a knowledge of the area that neither of the BSAA Agents had, and she was safer with them then alone in the overrun city of Paris. No matter what he told himself, he couldn't rationalize it. The people they were going after were much more dangerous than zombies, and they'd probably have the more dangerous infected around them for protection.
Taylor figured he'd voice his concerns to Agent Spina later, and they'd make a desicion. If they found a safe place, he'd ask to leave her there. He didn't want to risk the life of a 13 year old girl in a government mission.
Taylor knew that if he was left out of something after he had helped them get that far, he'd be ****ed. He had no doubt Emily would be as well, but they couldn't risk her safety any longer than they had to.
The door was starting to break open even more, and Taylor was getting glimpses of the zombies on the other side. Taylor figured they'd be a bit more than halfway down the hallway before the door broke open.

After checking for any visible signs of life, Jim started down the hallway about five meters. He then turned to Taylor.
"Hey, block the hallway off with this bench," he said, pointing to a nearby bench. "It won't do much, but it'll be something. I'm gonna go scout the hallway out a little bit. I'll be back."
Jim knew that the zombies would never be able to catch up with them. What he really wanted was to search the rest of the way before bringing Emily with. It would be hard enough fighting a BOW without worrying about her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It's all clear. You can advance."
After Jim had transmitted to Fote, he sat down on a column and rubbed the sweat off his brow. He had been walking for about ten minutes, so he had some time before the caught up. So far, just by seeing the signs on the walls, it looked like they were heading more toward the maintenance area of the museum. Lots' of "Do Not Enters" and "Private" written on the doors.
As he was relaxing a loud thud emitted from the ceiling and bits of plaster fell down onto Jim's head. That thing was back.
"Hey, try to quicken the pace. I'm getting a bad feeling."
Taylor took the bench and starting pushing it back towards the entrance hall. It was a heavy stone thing, and a good call by Spina. It would slow them down, lessen the flow of zombies that were going to be coming after them. Spina went to check out the hallway before he was done. After he had set it up, Taylor sat down on it and watched down the hall, waiting for the moment when the infected broke through.
Ten minutes after Spina dissapeared down the passage Taylor had selected, Jim radioed back to him and informed him they were good to go.
"Alright, I'm moving up. I'll tell her." Taylor responded into the radio.
He enjoyed the last few seconds of sitting down before he rose and moved over to Emily.
" Emily pas male, son temps pour nous pour se rencontrer en haut avec Jim. Le séjour devant moi et si vous voyez quelque chose, faites-moi savoir. Le signe quand vous voyez Jim."
Taylor said, treating her as she had said before, 'like a normal person. He hesitated for a second, and looked from Emily to the breaking door. Emily was a brave girl, and Taylor didn't want her to come back for him if the BOWs caught up.
"Si je vous dis d'aller, enlever la course à pied à Jim. N'arrêtez-vous pour rien. Vite maintenant, ces choses sont presque par." he said, nodding down the hall when he finished.
His radio buzzed once again and Jim came over the line urging them on. 'A bad feeling?' he asked himself, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. Taylor always trusted the gut of a veteran soldier, so he figured he'd transition that over to the BSAA.
"Jim de départ nous manquer, laisse pas le font attendre." said Taylor to Emily before turning on the radio and turning his head to speak into it as he waited. "Whats our route looking like?" anxious about his choice, as well as the source of Spina's bad feelings.
(Translation:
"Okay Emily, its time for us to meet up with Jim. Stay in front of me, and if you see something, let me know. Wave when you see Jim."
"If I tell you to go, take off running to Jim. Don't stop for anything. Quickly now, those things are almost through."
"Jim's starting to miss us, lets not keep him waiting)
Emily smiled and took off running as fast as her body would allow her to start moving, which wasn't incredibly fast, perhaps as fast as a child of nine or ten could when they were really trying. Her body was starting to work against her. She probably should have obeyed the doctor at the hospital and stayed in bed, even if it meant risking turning into one of the things that killed him.
Her thin hand beckoned for Taylor to follow her. He could probably keep up with her by either walking fast or jogging. He looked like he might even be able to move faster than she could by jogging if he was really trying. Every word that Taylor told her in French, she understood, but she was still unsure of what was going on. Jim couldn't explain it to her in a way she could understand and Taylor never quite got around to telling her what was going on.
She stopped and noticed Taylor still back onto his radio. She called back, "Are you coming?" The girl waited patiently for an answer. She was ordered to start moving when told and not to stop, but she didn't want to leave anyone behind.
Jim looked up and down the corridor. He felt the breeze, which was good and bad. Good since they would find an exit, bad since, if he could actually feel the breeze, the exit was probably open.
"Yeah, this is a good route," Jim replied, trying to keep his voice down. "But something just ain't right. I feel like there's enough 'lectricity in the air to run a light bulb, yah know?"
Bang! Bang!
More plaster fell onto Jim's head, causing him to jump down from the column and pull out his 1911. While the sound coming from the top of the building continued, a new sound had joined in. Something was moving around in the vents.
"Son-of-a-b!tch," Jim hissed, spinning around in the hallway looking for a different route. He knew of only two creatures that could possibly be moving around in a vent, and neither one was good news.
"Fote, you read?" the frequency cackled with a little static, both nothing horrendous. Not waiting for an answer, Jim continued. "Keep an eye on the vents, I think we might have company. Keep Emily close and get here as fast as you can. I think we might need to try a detour. I've been trying to read these signs to see if there's an emergency exit or employee exit or something, but it's all in French and I can't make out a d@mn word. I need you to read it for me, over."
Taylor had started after Emily in a quick walk. Somehow Taylor thought she could run faster than she had. He dismissed it, reasoning that he couldn't know how fast she could run. He wondered if he should tell her exactly what was going on. Perhaps if he told her, she'd point them in the right direction, and then sit it out once they reached the Cavalarie Building. 'I'll tell her when she asks' Taylor deceided 'and if she doesn't I'll tell her once we reach the building.'
Jim came back over the radio. Taylor was pleased to hear the route he had chosen was a good one, and he knew all about the electric feeling. It was one he had felt right before a firefight broke out. Before Taylor could respond, he heard banging over the comm.
"Spina?" Taylor asked over the radio although he didn't hear it.
Jim came back over the radio. Taylor listened to the news before cursing and jogging over to Emily. He looked at the vents, which weren't moving at the moment, but he heard something farther down.
"Emily, restez ferment et regardent les bouches. Une de ces choses est à l'intérieur." said Taylor putting a hand on her back and starting her forward. "Le mouvement aussi vite que vous pouvez, je serai juste derrière vous."
Taylor waited for Emily to move as the sounds from the vent started getting closer. He heard the sound, and saw part of the vent move. "Couvrez vos oreilles!" he yelled and squeezed off three rounds into the vent. There was a scream of pain from inside.
Fote took Emily's hand and led her under the thing and down the hall. He spoke into the radio, glancing up at the vents as they ran. "I'm on my way. Something is definetly in the vent, and its bleeding onto the floor. I'll be there in a minute, but the French word for exit is 'sortie', s-o-r-t-i-e."
Taylor and Emily would reach Jim shortly, but it would cut the time if they knew how they were getting out before they got there.
(Translation:
"Emily, stay close and watch the vents. One of those things is inside."
"Move as fast as you can, I'll be right behind you.)
"I'm sorry. I can usually run faster than this. If I can take a little rest at the Cavalerie, I can run normally." Emily apologized. She tried pushing herself to run faster than she was currently going since she had the feeling that Taylor was probably a little annoyed at how slow she was moving, but then she forced herself to stop about thirty seconds later when her body was starting to feel pushed. She needed the left-over energy to help find Cavalerie and if she wasted it all here, then she would end up being useless.
Emily then heard a noise above her head. The sounds of something scurrying, like some sort of mouse or rat, but larger. The sound seemed to follow her as she ran. She felt like she was in a horror movie, the ones where monsters hid in the vents and followed their prey as she tried to escape with their lives. It was one of the creepiest things she had to deal with. Then one of the doors to the vent above her head fell to the ground and missed her body by inches.
She gasped and looked at the open space in the vent, but quickly turned her vision to straight ahead. There was a figure in the shadows. She didn't know if it was Jim or not, but she figured that it would be good to take a chance and guess. "I think I see him!" she shouted, pointing at the figure in front of her.
Taylor didn't answer Emily. He knew when someone was trying to push themself past injury or illness. It happened almost daily back at the hospital. He was surprised that she managed to stop herself. Most people push themselves too far and end up making matters worse. Emily was indeed full of surprises.
Fote saw the vent door fall in front of Emily, and immediately swung his rifle up at the vent. Nothing. He heard something inside though. It had probably knocked the door off snaking past them, waiting in an ambush.
He hit the comm "Spina, I think you've seen us by now." Taylor said, raising his left hand and giving a slight wave at the figure "The thing in the vent went past us, keep your head up. Its either going for you or waiting to jump Emily and I."
Fote kept his rifle trained on the vent. He heard raspy breathing coming from the open vent. He cursed himself for not bringing a flashlight. He was now standing at Emily's side. Taylor wondered how they should proceed. If he sent Emily ahead to Jim, the thing could come out of the vent and kill her before either of the BSAA agents could fire a round. He couldn't go first and leave Emily, since more zombies would be coming through on the other side. Taylor cursed again for drawing a blank.
Doing a 180 at the sound of the grate hitting the floor, Jim saw Emily running down the hall. She said something in French, but he couldn't understand it.
"Spina, I think you've seen us by now. The thing in the vent went past us, keep your head up. Its either going for you or waiting to jump Emily and I."
Spina could see Fote in the distance too, though a good amount behind Emily.
Wanting to make sure that they knew it was him, Jim stuck his right hand up and let out a whistle before jogging ahead to catch up with Emily and Fote.
After he had ran nearly half way there, he stopped as something fell onto his shoulder with a plopping sound.
Jim looked up just in time to see a row of bright eyes illuminating in the darkness of the vent. He quickly rolled out of the way as the owner of these eyes jumped to the ground, trying to kill Spina.
As Jim pulled himself up to his feet and brushed himself off, the creature turned around to face him and rose up on its feet.
"Holy sh!t," Jim muttered, somewhat shocked by what was in front of him. He had never actually seen one face to face, but he had heard of it. They had called it the "Chimera", and, from what he had heard, they weren't to be trifled with.
"Fote! Get Emily!" Jim yelled after his trance had worn off. Jim then leveled his pistol and pulled off a shot at the Chimera as the Chimera was about to charge.
The round caught it through the shoulder, making it flinch slightly before jumping up onto the wall. Jim fired off two more rounds at it and then lost it as it climbed back into the air duct.
Jim stood there, silently, trying to listen for where the Chimera was going. After a couple minutes, Jim turned his gaze toward Fote, without lowering his pistol. They had to get out of here, now. But would Emily and Fote be able to make it to him without the beast jumping them.
"Fote," Jim whispered, switching to his comm. "Are there any emergency exits near you? Anything you can take to get you outside?"
Their best chance at this point was probably to split up and meet up back outside. Hopefully, there was a route Fote and Emily could take that wouldn't entail running through that main corridor.
Taylor scanned the doors around them, as well as straining his ears to listen for noises coming from inside of the vent. He cursed as he read the doors around him, most of them leading to maintenance closets.
"No, no emergency exits." Fote whispered back over the comm line "Hold on, I have an idea."
With a glance up at the vent, Taylor brought his rifle level with one of the doors. He kept his left hand on the gun, ready to fire as he opened the door with his right. Nothing. Fote stuck his head inside and looked up. No ventilation ducts ran through the room. With another quick look, he made sure the door was the only way into the room.
Taylor pulled his head back and eyed the vents, his rifle going back up to the opening. "Service closet. We can leave Emily in here. That way we're the only targets."
Taylor figured Jim would want to take the civilian out of the situation, and since they couldn't leave her alone, that would take Fote out as well. That would only leave Spina against the Chimera.
He didn't wait for confirmation. The military experience in him screamed to wait, but he was a BSAA agent. In the brief experience with the BSAA he'd had, he was above the par of the average teams. Plus, although Spina was senior agent, there really wasn't a command system amongst agents.
Taylor knelt down from his position next to Emily, now on her right. He wasn't bending down for the same reason as before. Now it was so she could hear him when he whispered "Emily, j'ai besoin de vous pour entrer dans la pièce que j'ai juste vérifiée. Vous serez sûrs là pendant que nous nous occupons de la chimère." Taylor said before adding "Fermez la porte."
He didn't think Emily knew what the Chimera was, but he figured she'd catch on. Fote's eyes never left the vent, and neither did the SIG. He waited for Emily to move into maintenance room.
(Translations: "Emily, I need you to go into the room I just checked. You'll be safe there while we take care of the Chimera."
"Lock the door.")
