The Tokyo Sewer system is a modern, effecient system which is checked on every day by sanitation workers. Lately, groans can be heard resonating from the sewers...

[Russell and Tim arrive in the Tokyo Sewer System]
The truck pulled up to a large outlet that was dry and open. The men climbed out of the back of the truck and readied their weapons. Russell was last out as he examined the entrance the group was going in through.
"Well this is it doctor. At least we aren't waist high in human s***." He chuckled as he readied his gun.

Tim dawdled behind, waiting for the rest of the men to finish preparing their weapons. He didn’t feel comfortable in the sewers. Not because of a gut feeling but because he’s wearing newly bought leather shoes. Had he known that he’d be wandering around in human waste he would have gotten a pair of knee high plastic boots that one can get cheaply.
“Commander, perhaps you can lend me some footwear that is appropriate for this situation?” He removed his shoes inside the truck, tucking them in the bag he bought with him and taking out his laboratory coat. With no medical supplies it became useless. Then he spoke loud enough for everybody to hear as he buttoned up the coat. “Don’t get yourselves wounded. I would hate to treat you with unsterilized materials. Blood poisoning or sepsis has no cure, just so you know.”

One of the old Umbrella facilities had been somewhere under the sewer system, but it was most definitely sealed of years ago, so there wasnt any point to even looking. Still, Splain had his hopes up high, wanting to find at least some trace of the virus down here that had been left unchecked by the BSAA. As far as he could tell, the above wasnt effected quite yet, but the seedy underground of Tokyo gave him indications that something was down here. That something was in the form of a BOW, because he had been following traces of it ever since the northern entrance. Some of the locals knew he was down here, and if they ever did mention that to the BSAA, there would no doubt be trouble.
So long as he kept a low profile, Splain wouldnt have a problem conducting his research in the privacy of his own little makeshift station. He had brought equipment down, the basics, nothing too too fancy. Samples would be taken, and if at all possible, experiments would be run. He wasnt worried about risks, not from the flesh eaters, or whatever else was down here. The infected definitely were against him, but it was nothing an axe couldnt take care of. There wasnt many, just the odd one straggling through some thick sludge. If anything, the smell was the hardest part. Splain quite enjoyed the smell of rotting flesh, but human feces? That was his tipping point for scents that bothered him.
Setting up didnt take any longer than fifteen minutes, and with some chemical torches, the dry area he was working on had been lit up very well. Splain began to sort out his previous works, and getting fresh syringes ready. But the infected that roamed around had found their way to the light eventually, and had to be dealt with. The echo in the sewers made each and every slice of an axe stir more noise as it grazed the hard stone walls. Normally, it wouldve been easier to his his shotgun, but the axe was just the silence he needed, and it didnt need to be reloaded.

Russell rolled his eyes and cocked his head up toward the sky as if to ask God why? He grabbed an extra pair of boots from the truck and chucked them to the doctor. The old man had started pushing many buttons. He lead the way into the sewers, not caring if Tim followed or not. He would definitely have an advantage over the others since he wouldn't smell anything.
Ivan sat watching Splain set up his equipment. He had ordered new test subjects and they should be arriving soon. Once the undead made their way to the pair he and Splain dispatched them easily. He had a few of his own men set up through out the sewers and a small group were in control of a BOW. They were ready for an army.

Tim stared at the dusty worn boots in dismay, but figured that it’s best than to have nothing. Besides, he’ll be trudging through poop-tunnels, a journey that should be avoided by well dressed people. He dusted them off by the edge of the truck before putting them on, then slowly made his way off the vehicle.
He followed the mercenaries at a distance, putting an arm across his nose as he did so. They seemed unaffected by the stench, especially the leader. Or maybe their masks are preventing them from getting a whiff of sewage air. Good move, Tim thought, should have asked for one earlier. But he saw how Zandt behaved a while ago, and he’s not risking being left behind by talking to him. He decided not to talk to any of them for the rest of the mission, unless it’s an emergency.

"Ivan, out of all the places in the world we could choose to go, why is it that we chose Tokyo?" It was a good question. Splain had gotten used to the undead by now, but being in an area where it wasnt completely overrun was different. At this day in age, it had been controlled enough, no thanks to the bad guys.
Before Ivan could answer, Splain finished. Or maybe Ivan just knew that the doctor was going to be rhetorical, and kept his mouth closed. "Because of the population. Tokyo is the largest population left untouched by the virus. If I were one of the bad guys, I would come here, and do my tests on this population. But im one of the bad guys, Ivan, you know this. Either of us are one of the bad guys. Bad guys are stupid, and always get themselves killed doing something stupid and giving the good guys an advantage. So, what do we do? We do our experiments down here, and wait for it to spread above."
Splain was almost certain that this was all making complete sense to his friend. It just made sense in general. Things could go one way, and have an impact on the following days. Or they could go another way, and have a very much different outcome. "You see, Ivan, we arent the bad guys. But that doesnt make us the good guys. Were the ones who line up all the ducks, and then watch as the good guys and bad guys fight. If the bad guys win, they get their hands on our research, and do what they want with it. That would make me sad. If the good guys win, they get their hands on our research, and that would, again, make me sad."
The doctor was always one good for talking, and making sense, but it was always so diabolical. Without a doubt, there had been people from both sides after his work, and there was information floating around out there linking both Splain and Ivan to the sewers here in Tokyo. "Part of our plan? Maybe, maybe not. Did it matter in the end? No, because im certain nobody will get their hands on our work. They will die trying."

Russell lead the group deeper into the sewers, turning on their flashlights once they were in the dark. He kept his ears peeled for any sort of alien noises. He removed his combat knife and readied himself to come in contact with a zombie. It's ragged breathing could be heard by all and the rest readied themselves for any others that may be in hiding. A squishing noise could be heard by the others as the knife sunk into the back of the zombie's head. it's body went instantly limp and dropped to the ground with a thud. Silence once again filled the sewers.
Ivan listened to his old friend talk to him but it seemed that Ivan's plans eluded the genius doctor. He didn't understand why they were going to experiment on the populace in Japan. The civilians were simply cattle to Ivan. Ivan wasn't a good guy or a bad guy but a conqueror. His plans were recreating an army of loyal soldiers who were like him. Every experiment until they perfected the solution was to be used on fodder not on his men.
"Splain, I am unsure if you understand. We are not giving our research to anyone. We are using it to recreate my unique gifts. Much like we had started in Germany. I have created a lab for you and placed security throughout the area. Soon our test subjects shall arrive." He pointed while explaining to Splain. "Soon we will have the ability to recreate it and give this gift to men loyal to me and you and allow us to conquer anything we wish."

Tim quickly took a few steps back faster than he thought he could as the body of a zombie struck the ground. Zombies, here in the heart of Tokyo! He had put down a lot of them before, but that was from afar. Those he killed in close range were done with the help of a bayonet attached to his hunting rifle, well beyond their reach and far enough to avoid the empty eyes staring back at him. Then he realized that he was unarmed in an area that has infected in it. He rummaged about in his bag, trying to look for a weapon to protect himself in case he got attacked or separated from the group. What he found was depressing; a couple of scalpels, his pair of shoes, a notebook and a pen. Certainly not the best kind of weapons to use against the horde.
He thought about asking for one from the mercenaries, but they would have more use for it than him. With that he decided to stay closer to them instead, depending and trusting them to make swift work of the zombies in case more appear.

"Yes, yes Ivan, of course! I was only playing. We stick to the plan. Im just curious about these test subjects, you know? I feel like its my birthday, and this is a gift to me, something new to play with..." Now, obviously the doctor had something different in mind, but he liked the way Ivan thought. That was exactly why the two had been working together ever since, they got along, had very similar interests.
"If this works the way I plan, then we will have an army to work with. Maybe nothing too sophisticated, but it will be a start. With more to work with, he can take over quicker. In time, Ivan, in time, we will have enough to take over the whole of Tokyo. Or if there is something much more grand, we can create a sense of anarchy here, and use it as a distraction to move our army somewhere more appropriate." Splain had high hopes for the events that will follow, but for now, they needed to work on achieving the virus' full potential first. This might not be exactly as expected, recreating a superhuman would take much more effort, little lone an entire army of them. If things went back, it would be like what happened in Africa a few years back.

Russell did a quick check of the body and found a usual police belt with a pistol in the holster. He checked the clip before handing it to Tim. He was only going to give him a few pointers since enclosed places were tricky when it came to firearms. "Don't shoot this thing unless you need to. If you are in a closed space, don't miss or you'll be deafened and killed that much quicker. It will hurt your ears so be ready to grind your teeth." Russell explained before taking the front of the pack.
He lead them through tunnels, killing the occasional zombie but never finding any enemies with guns or B.O.W.s and it was starting to feel bad in his gut. Russell guided them through, being stopped or guided back to the area that they had been following for a while. Russell had a feeling that it was a trap with each step he took.
Ivan agreed while his radio called out to him every so often. His men were shadowing the mercenaries he had arranged to show up. They were getting closer, all of the blockades he had set up to guide them to the area he had designated their laboratory. He decided to add to the conversation. "Well if all else fails, we let loose our creations and leave for greener pastures." He said as the radio chirped letting him know his guests were even nearer.
Russell walked into an area which opened up and seemed to be right below the streets of Tokyo. Cages and lab equipment was scattered through the room. Two men sat atop a plateau like area with a table between them. The doorway behind them was closed off as soon as they stepped through. A large metal grate came down behind them and seconds later they were all surrounded by gunmen.
Ivan stood and stepped down from the area. "Welcome to our lab. You are our newest test subjects. Let us start with...you!" Ivan said to the group as he grabbed a man out of the crowd of mercenaries. The group started yelling at Ivan as he dragged Johnny out by the throat. He set him down on the table and lashed him in, keeping him in place.
"Next is you!" Ivan said while pointing toward Russell.

Tim vigorously nodded at Russell’s instructions as the mercenary handed him a gun. He would have preferred a hunting rifle since those were more accurate, but in cramp spaces such as this sewer there isn’t much room to maneuver a gun with a long barrel. He might hit one of their own, or be deafened by the loud sound of a rifle shot echoing in the sewer.
They came to a well lit area littered with laboratory equipment and various cages. Tim tried to peek through the crowd of mercenaries, but he still can't see anything. He lingered behind the men, waiting for their next move when he heard yelling and struggling. He moved to the side just in time to see one of the mercenaries dragged by the neck and fastened onto a table. Then chaos ensued.
“What are you doing? Free him!” The doctor shouted at the men as he moved a few steps back, his voice hoarse and exasperated. He felt something cold on his back, and touched what must have been a metal sliding door.
”Commander, we’re trapped!” Tim raised the handgun, preparing to fire in case one of their assailants tries to grab him.

It was evident that the small crew of mercenaries had fallen into their trap, and the lines of gunmen put them at a full disadvantage. They wouldnt dare fire out at Ivan, or anyone else for that matter, not without getting a bullet in their head. The panic was quick, but over in a flash. Not much much panic as it was surprise, as majority of the mercenaries seemed to be battle hardened. But given the situation, there was nothing any of them could do but watch.
Splain had come down, passing by Ivan and his new live specimen, and sifted through the group, searching for one in particular for him to be his personal test. It was basic for him to do this, albeit an unorthidox method for choosing one. But before he could pick, two of the mercenaries sprung out at him, giving him a blooding nose before they were gunned down. The blood matted his face now, his own blood, which wasnt something he enjoyed. Others, yes, most definitely. Splain eyed the weakest link in the group, which happened to be an elderly man appearing in his early fifties, if he could put an age on him. This wasnt always the weakest, however, but clearly the least experience in the middle of the group.
The older man looked to be a medic of some kind for the mercenaries, which was always a nobel cause. Splain could give him a handshake for being the one in charge of their units health, it was a skill that not a lot of people still maintained over the hears. Not to judge a book by its cover, but the older man had all the right gear for medical treatment on the field, he was legitimate. "You. Come with me. Im giving you the chance to cooperate with my partner and I. The brute is no doctor, that falls into my category. But as far as a second opinion goes, I think you will do just fine..."
Judging by the facial expression of the man, and the way he still held onto the gun, cooperation most likely wouldnt follow through as expected. Splain knew this, and prepared for it. A syringe filled with his own creation had been in his right hand, and he knew exactly how to use it. "...This can go down the hard way, or the easy way. The easy way, you dont get killed. The hard way, you do. But not just killed, wasted. Youve been around this world for a long time, surely you know much about wasting precious time left living." Coming with Splain was the best course of action for the man in the end, and that wasnt just an opinion, it was a fact.

Russell stared pure hatred into the soul of those who apposed them. If looks could kill, nobody would need guns. The larger man pointed him out and he beckoned him on for a challenge. It was one thing to surprise somebody to take them hostage but in a stand up fight he was sure he could take Ivan. The doctor walked by the crowd and some of the younger mercenaries lashed out. As soon as they had attacked they were executed. Russell was angry but knew they were all dead men anyway. Ivan sat at the table waiting for Splain to come back to the table.

Tim saw the hopelessness of their situation. He lowered his gun, putting it inside his lab coat’s pocket and raised his hands. “All -- All right. But don’t kill any of them.” He referred to the mercenaries with him. People who knew him would say the doctor’s act was merciful, but he understood very well that he won’t survive escaping this hole unless he is accompanied by some of the mercenaries. Most of them were also too young; it isn’t right to have them killed so prematurely.
He also saw the other person as making a fair point. He’s sixty-three years old. He didn’t live long enough just to become a dead body rotting in a sewer. And if cooperating gives him a chance to live, as well as the others, he’ll take it. He’s also hoping that this leader of theirs is making a plan right now.
