"Um, yes. I don't know what kind. They are these meals in a bag. I've had some and they're not bad. When was the last time you ate?"
Cindy began chatting as she went back to her bag and brought out two of the MRE's that were in it. She adjusted her glasses and read the titles on them.
I've got lasagna and meat loaf. Hope it's better than my dads. Which...uh...which would you like? I mean hosts pick right?"
She held them both out, trembling a little In her wet clothes. As much as she didn't like he idea of getting undressed in front of the woman, she'd have to put them over the fire until they were dry. Maybe after dinner she would build up the courage.

I should feel like a heel, thought Sarah and she accepted the meal from Cindy, but she rationalized it as just being cautious. Still, she reach in her pack and pulled out some water for the both of them and some beef jerky. She handed half over to Cindy.
"Sorry about how that went down", she said. "I'm not used to trusting people and have been fairly well burned when I do." She shrugged. "Women can be more evil than men, sometimes." That was all she said about that. Popping the top of the MRE, she pulled out a fork that she had scrounged in the kitchen and dug into her meal. Still feeling a little bad, which wasn't something she was used to. she grabbed a t-shirt and shorts and tossed them over to Cindy. "Go get dry."

Cindy found a mess kit in her pack and took out the form she found in there. It was clean...she wished it was cleaner though. The clothes. We're a surprise, and the admission that the woman felt guilty about holding her at gun point. It made her feel a lot more comfortable.
"Thanks. God I am a mess aren't I? I feel like I've been wearing these forever."
She wasn't sure if she wanted to leave the room. The woman said she hadn't explored the rest of the house yet. It WOULD be safer doing it in the room.
"I'm..uh..going to change in he corner over there. Don't feel safe exploring the house in wet clothes, you know?"
She got up and slowly walked over to the corner of the room, out of sight from the woman. She quickly stripped, putting in the woman's spare clothes.
The size difference was going to be an issue. The woman was taller, and a broader build. The shirt fit, although it reached her thighs. The bottoms were the problem. She couldn't tighten them enough to stay on her smaller hips. Giving up she brought the bottoms back to the woman and hung her clothes to dry over the fire.
"I guess I'll get my legs warmed if nothing else. So...where did you come from?"

"I don't remember too much except that we lived in Cuba for some time. I think it was between the outbreaks. Other than that, after my parents were killed, I've been basically on my own... so about 4 months now. Ran into some trouble with a group of guys and since then, I just stay to myself. From what my parents told me, before the outbreak, we lived on the East Coast... Maryland I think... near some base."
That was the most that Sarah had spoken in the last 2 weeks. It made her throat dry, so she stopped talking and grabbed her water and downed a few swigs. Then she took another bite of her meal.

"I'm still trying to get back to Ohio. They might be there. My parents I mean. I can reach them, and the only car I had broke down a few miles from here. I haven't seen...any of them. The dead ones. I guess there isn't anything out here, or any towns."
Cindy was bad when it came to connecting to other people. It was one of the things she was never able to do in school. Machines were easier to get along with sometimes.
"I'm sorry. About your parents. God I'm terrible at this. For a genius in terrible at interacting with people. Maybe I'll grow out of it when I finally become an adult."

Sarah chuckled a little bit and shook her head. "Think nothing of it. I'm hate people and I know how to talk to them, but just don't give a damn to do so. In fact, you are the first person I've talked to in the last 2 weeks that I haven't taken a shot at, so consider yourself way more qualified to talk to people than me."
Sarah was done with her meal and it was getting dark. The rain was still drizzling on and lightning flashed occasionally. The house creaked and groaned and Sarah hoped to God that it was the building and not something else.
"So Cindy, do you want to check out the house now, or in the morning?"

"I would sleep better if I knew the house was empty. But I'd kind of like to explore wearing pants. The shirts nice, but there's a lot of leg showing. My dad would be ****ed."
Cindy took off her glasses and cleaned them on the shirt, blinking as her vision went from blurry to normal again. She was glad the shirt was soft enough not to smudge the lenses.
"But if we could wait for a little while my pants and shoes to dry I don't mind putting them back on and checking out he rest of the house."

"Sure, no problem. I won't be able to sleep without making sure that some hillbilly family won't come down from the attic and eat me alive."
Having finished eating, Sarah picked up her Glock and the magazine. She put the ejected round back in the magazine and the inserted the magazine into the handle of the pistol. Racking the slide, she chambered a round and put it in her holster. Next, she grabbed her rifle, which was up until now, out of view and checked to make sure it was loaded. She laid that on the couch. Then she picked up her utility knife and a crowbar. The knife when into a sheath and the crowbar she tucked into her belt. She would carry the rifle and the flashlight in her hands.
Then she sat back down on the couch. They had a few minutes until Cindy would be able to be fully clothed.

Cindy gawked at the sheer amount of firepower the woman was carrying. While she had a working knowledge of firearms she had never fired a gun before. She felt suddenly a lot safer around Sarah, and at the same time making a mental note to never make her mad.
"I uh, just have the hammer. And the axe."
She wiggles her toes, suddenly nervous about exploring the house. If she fired those guns, they would know if there were any dead in the area. They would all come to the house.
"You don't think there is anything here, do you?"

Sarah shook her head, but really didn't know. "I banged on the door pretty loud when I came in and then yelled up the stairs and waited for a response. So either it was a deaf person, a walker buried deep in the building... or the house is empty."
She stood up and stretch her legs and back. If it came to running out of the building, she didn't want to pull a muscle or have a cramp. "But I would rather be sure and with light down to almost nill, I say we check it out soon. Whenever you are ready."

"Yeah, I can see that being a good idea. I don't want to be shining a light around in here, or trying to walk around in the dark. Who knows what is in this place, right?"
Cindy checked her shoes, which were close to dry, as were her jeans. She slipped them back on, shivering a little as the slightly damp material clung to her legs, and slipped on her shoes.
"Okay, ready to go exploring?"

Sarah headed to the door and stopped and looked back. "Seriously, only an ax and a hammer?" she asked, almost incrediously. How did you even survive getting here, she thought. "Do you feel comfortable enough with the rifle?" If Sarah had to give up a gun, she'd rather keep her handgun if they were in the house.

"I e never shot a gun before. I'd probably shoot you or something I wasn't supposed to."
Cindy felt a littl sheepish as she righted her grip on the axe handle, putting on a more confident from then she showed before. She could handle herself with this weapon. At the moment using a gun would not be in everyone's best interests.
"I can't get by with this though. It's gotten me this far, right?"

Are you from some type of cult where they keep the women in cages until they are married off to fat old guys, thought Sarah. She didn't say it but just rolled her eyes a bit.
"Well, honey, if you hang out with me too long, you'll learn to shoot. For now, I'll leave it here." She placed the rifle on the couch and then motioned to the door.
"I've checked the kitchen and dining room earlier, but was about it. I think there are three more rooms on the first floor, if it follows most plantation mansions... a grand living area, servants quarters and a bathroom. All the bedrooms will probably be upstairs. From the outside it seems like there is a third floor and there is a possibility of a basement as well. I say we check out the ground floor first and see where we go from there.

"Okay. That works. I'll make sure nothing sneaks up behind us. I'm really hoping the place is empty. I'd like to sleep safely for once."
Cindy gave the woman a small smile and readjusted her glasses in a fidgeting motion. She wasn't going to outright say she was scared, but she was terrified. She was just doing her best not to show it.
