"Okay, then. Let's head out." Sarah took a deep breath and headed out. Up ahead, the staircase wove around the wall and up to the 2nd floor. Straight beyond that was a short hallway that dead ended into a door. Just to the right and to the left were other doors. If Sarah had to guess, the door on the right led to the servants/maid's quarters, the door to the left led back to the kitchen via the grand room. The door in front of them probably led down to the basement.
"Let's take the right door first", she said, indicating the servant's quarters. It was likely to be a dead end and smaller and easier to check out. At the door, Sarah banged on the door with her foot several times. Nothing answered or stirred behind the door, but upstairs something creaked. Sarah wanted to say it was just the old house, but the timing was a little suspect.
Not hearing anything, Sarah opened the door and backed up, pointing her gun and her flash light into the room. Nothing jumped out at them and Sarah began to sweep the room with her light. Inside the spacious bedroom was two beds, two closet doors and a bathroom door.
"We need to check the closests and bathrooms... also, under the beds."

Cindy was still looking up at the ceiling as she nodded in agreements. She closed the door behind them, and started checking the closets and drawers as they came to them. Nothing but dust, more dust and a few moth eaten clothing. How long had this place been abandoned?
"Do you want to check the beds? I'm scared of what could be under there."

Sarah came out of the bathroom. There wasn't much there that could be useful. No Soap, no toilet paper, nothing.
She sighed. "Yeah, let go ahead and search under there." Grabbing a wooden coat rack, she broke off the top. Bending down, she jabbed it underneath the first bed and slid it around. Sarah could hear it scraping on the floor and it didn't cover any resistance. Pulling it out, she went over to the bed against the wall. She bent down and did the same thing. Again, nothing but scraping and it hitting on the wall. She pulled it out and dropped it on the ground.
"Nothing in here", she said, standing up. "Time to check out the great room", she said, pointing across the hallway.

"Yeah. Okay. I am so glad there wasn't anything under there."
Cindy hefted her axe again, and opened the door back into the hallway, making sure nothing had come into the hallway while they were in the servants room. Seeing nothing, she did as Sarah had, kicking the bottom of the door a few time to see if anything responded.

There was a hiss and a thump on the lower part of the door. Sarah jumped back and focused her light and her gun on the sounds. Just to be sure, she kicked the door as well.
Again, a hissing sound was heard and a thump was felt against the lower part of the door.
Sarah looked at Cindy. "What do you think? Feral Cat?"

"God I hope so. Please just be a feral cat. I can live with that."
Cindy put her hand on the door knob, and looked at Sarah, waiting for her to be ready.
"I open, you shoot if you have to?"

"Just a second", Sarah said, retreating into the servant's quarters. She returned, seconds later, with one of the quilts that were on the bed. She had wrapped it around her arms and then nodded to Cindy. "Open the door."
As Cindy opened the door, Sarah bent down, waiting for whatever was going to attack her.
A dirty white and brown fur stain shot out at them, hissing in anger. It hit the blanket and began to hiss and scratch, its claws slashing into the bed cover. Sarah quickly wrapped the blanket around the cat and spun the sheet, trapping it in the blanket. She pulled out her knife and stabbed it into the bulging blanket. After 3 stabs, the blade came out bloody... red blood. She stabbed a few more times, before the creature was put out of its misery. Then she tossed it on the ground.
"We will eat it later... maybe I can make a pair of underwear for you out of its skin."
Then she pulled out her handgun and flashlight and shone it into the room. The smell was hitting them. It was of death and cat poop. It was starting to turn Sarah's stomach.
"Maybe we won't eat it."

Cindy paled as she looked at the bloodstain spreading out of the blanket. The smell hit her once the door had been open for a while, and she gagged a little. She knew the smell though, it wasn't just a cat.
"There's a body in there. There has to be."
She tried to get herself together and brought her axe up, ready to strike anything that came out. If they were lucky it was one of the very dead ones. The ones that don't try and rise up and eat you.

Sarah stepped into the room and shone the light around. Again, she gagged in the corner. "You know what, Cindy, I don't think anything in this room is worth looking for. I don't see a tank, food buffet, or a helicopter... or hot guy in here. Let's just put the furball back in here and lock it up."

Cindy nodded, picking up the blanket and tossing it back into the room. She was glad they didn't have to go in there, and could count one more room off of their search list.
"I know I'm Chinese, but even I wouldn't eat that cat."
While it was a bad joke, it at least made her feel more relaxed. She didn't know what else had died in there, but she didn't want to go searching to find out. There was nothing in there they needed, and they did have to make sure there wasn't anything dead and dangerous inside.

"Let's call it a night", yawned Sarah as she headed back to the study that they had taken up residence in. "Tomorrow morning we can explore more of the house in daylight. Plus if the floor is rotted upstairs, we won't know until it is too late."
At the door, she grabbed her motorcycle and wheeled it into the study. Since the doors opened inward, as soon as they shut the doors, Sarah would push her motorcycle against the doors, blocking them off. Then she would move her couch against the motorcycle. If something tried to get in, they would definitely be delayed and wake Sarah and Cindy up.

"I like the way you think. I'm hoping all we heard upstairs was another feral cat. Be nicer than finding anything else."
Cindy crept her fire axe next to her as she picked a place to sleep for the night. Slipping back out of her damp clothes she hung them over the fire to dry, and pulled two small, but very warm blankets from the bottom of her survival pack.
"Do you need one? I really only need the one. I'm pretty small."
Pretty small was an understatement. Cindy was barely five feet tall. Unlike everyone else her age hitting a growth spurt, she had pretty much stopped growing at fourteen and still pretty much looked like a teenager. Well, she was a teenager. She just didn't appreciate looking like a YOUNG teenager.

Sarah just finished pushing the couch against her bike. She turned around and looked at Cindy. She tried to be nice. "No thank you, Cindy. I have my own." Sarah put down her stuff and sat back down on the couch. She gave Cindy a smile. "I guess all we need to do now, is enjoy a wonderful night sleep in this spa of a mansion." She patted the couch. "I have a sleeping bag. Do you want the couch?"

"I don't know how much sleep I'll get. I'm terrified. Never was able to sleep in unfamiliar places, even before the world ended."
Cindy look around. Sleeping on the couch had its advantages, but she would sleep better knowing she was farther from the door than Sarah. If anything happened she would probably respond faster.
"You can have the couch. I sleep better on the floor anyways."
She laid out the first blanket, and then put the other on top of it. Glancing back, she went to the backpack and took out her stuffed bear, Mr. Smiggles. She had taken it on every trip she had ever gone on, and was glad she had it with her when she was touring schools. Right now it would make for a great pillow, and would remind her of what she was trying to get back home to.

Sarah threw her sleeping bag on the couch and then rolled up a blanket and tied it into a roll, making it a pillow. Then she shoved her handgun, barrel first into the couch so that she could grab it quickly. The rifle, was set beside her on the floor. She had a routine and had to follow it as to not forget anything. She stripped off her clothes and then pulled on a tank top and some shorts, fastening her belt that held her knife and sheath on it to her waist. Then she fastened her hair back loosely.
She turned around and bust out laughing... "Seriously, a stuff bear. that is quite awesome." Sarah was laughing because up until the outbreak, she had a bear as well. It was just funny how somethings were not replaceable, no matter what.
"I wish I had kept mine sometimes."
