EVIL started snorting loudly, like a laugh. He did it for awhile and then stopped, staring at the helpless man on the ground. He started making all kinds of faces. He smiled, then looked depressed, then clenched and bared his teeth, and then smiled again. His finger slightly depressed on the trigger on his flamethrower, burning a small patch of grass in front of him.
The cold air touching his lungs came out into the air as a fog, blowing up into the deep night. It was slowly getting lighter, however, and his instincts told him he would have to seek shelter soon. The light would cause him temporary blindness if he stayed out. EVIL had learned that before. Until he found a new set of sunglasses, he couldn't hunt during the day. There was a cave nearby he could wait in if it came to it, but he wanted this target first, he needed it.

Kodi couldn't take it anymore. No help was coming, and he knew it. He would have to fight off the monster alone or die trying. Survivng was a slim chance though; that...thing...was much stronger and carried a payload much larger than Kodi could probably wish for right now. Sure, he was at a hunting lounge—and there might be weapons—but the chances of finding a rifle with a decent supply of ammo were slim. That Magnum he found earlier was probably the only weapon in the entire building or at least the most powerful.
And to see that thing hardly even flinch from a .357 round....
Frustration raised deep inside him again as he kept replaying different possibilities—different means of escape—but always finding a fatal flaw or error that could easily spell the doom for him. Survival was not Kodi's field; he was a math major, dammit! Not a goddamn survivalist, but there was no way out of it now. Like it or not, Kodi was trapped—
—and until you stop complaining and whining over it, you won't go no where but just keep getting closer to death, baka!
Holding his bruised side, Kodi reluctantly got up. The wound from the monster's throw was still tender, but it would heal, assuming he made it out alive.
Remembering o the creature's reaction to the light, he shifted the device so it shown pass the glass doors and into the lobby. Doing that might grant him an extra haven in the forsaken facility, but it would only be temporary, but still long enough for him to catch another breathe before he headed deeper into the lounge.
He opened the doors and stepped through them.
Inside was a huge mess. Along the floor of the medium-sized room, papers were scattered all over the floor and on the reception desk at the back. The brown, wooden walls were smeared in blood, some of the dark splatters the shape of hands, some streaks or even sentences. Kodi even saw "THIS PLACE ISNT SAFE!" written on the right wall, with the bottom of the letters smeared of the dark crimson liquid. There was also a corpse on top of a table in the middle of the room, right next to two couches on opposite sides of it. The only lighting was the dimly lit bulb in the white ceiling and the other flickering on and off, giving the room a "horror" feel to it. The only other exit besides the front door was a wooden entrance that read "Employees Only" and two hallways that went opposite directions, and both openings were on the left and right side of the room. A classic little lobby is all it was, besides—of course—the dead body and blood everywhere.
The writing on the wall caught Kodi's attention however. If the place wasn't safe, then that would mean that it wasn't only just that single monster causing mayhem....
There's more going on around here than that single monster. For all I know, there may be dozens of those hellish creatures.
Kodi began searching the room thoroughly. He might as well—maybe a weapon would turn up.
And one did.
Right next to the corpse—a green duffel bag laid on the table. The carrying device was covered in splatters of blood and dirt, but Kodi couldn't even care at this point.
He went for its zipper and opened it...
...and smiled widely, almost about ready to start even crying some. Inside the duffel bag was a Remington 700 hunting rifle, the firearm painted in a forest camouflage color.
Kodi checked the gun to see if it had any rounds in it. It was fully loaded, and there were also two spare magazines in the bag. He had fifteen shots in all.
The gun was pretty heavy, so Kodi put it down and tucked in the two clips in his right pocket before slinging the shoulder strap on the rifle over his head to carry it. He inspected the scope a bit as well. Kodi didn't know s*** about guns, but he had a pretty good idea that if the scope was loose or wobbly, it probably meant it wasn't screwed on tight. In all, it was a nice find, and a lucky one at that.
Suddenly the corpse next to the duffel bag twitched.
s***, he's alive!
Involuntarily, he stepped back a bit in shock, not expecting the "dead body" to move—
—and then the man started to lift himself up....
Kodi cleared his throat and tried to remain calm as he spoke in a soft voice, "Excuse me, sir...are you alright...?"
The man didn't respond, but he slowly turned around and now Kodi was able to get a good look at him.
Aside from the orange safety vest, dark cargo pants, and white long-sleeve shirts, the bald man looked bluntly "dead" or just really really sick. His entire skin was pale and clammy. The man's eyes were also a milky white as well. Some where in back of Kodi's mind, he asked himself if the man was blind or had an eye disorder; his eyes shouldn't be like that. Then the man walked—no, shuffled into the light like he some kind of sleep walker. That's when Kodi saw the clearly visible ragged wound on his neck to the left side. All the blood around the area was dried up, meaning that he would've already ran out of blood....
So why is this guy even walking and not on the ground passed out or dead...?
"You alright...?" Kodi asked again, but the man only responded with a soft, inhuman moan and kept walking toward him, raising his arms—outstretched with its deadly skeleton fingers just waiting to grab onto Kodi.
Then the guy lunged at Kodi.
Instinctively, Kodi caught the man, his left hand on his chest holding him back with with his right hand under his chin, grasping his neck. The guy had incredible strength, and he kept pushing against Kodi, moaning and bearing his decayed teeth, washing Kodi with a nauseating smell of death. Its teeth were just inches away from Kodi's throat; he could almost feel those blackened teeth sinking into his flesh, ripping pain into every fiber into his being—
—no—
With his new found will, Kodi pushed hard and knocked the man——zombie, call it what it is—back and the creature flew and landed hard on its back, only moaning a bit before proceeding to get up again. Kodi only stared in disbelief, imagining himself that he did not just get attacked by a man who should be dead, that he did not just feel the man's cold, deathly skin against his hands, and that the guy had not just try to bite him.
Once the zombie made its cry again, Kodi snapped out of his trance. He raised the rifle quickly and took aim through the scope, aiming dead center at the center of the zombie's forhead.
He pulled the trigger.
CLICK!
s***, forgot to chamber the first round!
The zombie drew even closer and Kodi hastily took his eye away from the sights to draw the bolt back to ready the first bullet. Once he heard the metallic click, he raised the rifle again and pressed its stock against his right shoulder.
The zombie lunged again.
BANG!
The shot was true and hit the zombie square in the head. Fragments of bone and liquid flew behind it and the thing snapped its head back before falling to the ground.
Kodi just stood there, speechless.

EVIL had came around to a window side in the lobby, and looked in at the man who had apparently killed another of his kind. He looked in and smiled at the weakness, the apparent traitor who killed a man for his weapon. He enjoyed the sight of the man's grim expression of what he had done.
EVIL then raised the flamethrower, and let out a loud scream. Flames busted through the window toward the man with the gun. He smiled, and his eyes glowed.

Distinct orange lightning began filling the room again—
—as well as a inhuman screech followed by a sudden rush of heat.
Kodi knew that is was the creature again, firing off his flamethrower, but he was ready. Not falling for the same surprise attack, he dived before the receptionist desk and fell on his back. The carpet cushioned his fall, but there was a new, hot pain on his leg. Kodi sat up straight and immediately began patting down the small flame on his right calf. The fire had slowly burnt through the his black pants' fabric, but with three quick slaps, the fire was put out. The area wasn't as bad as his shoulder; the skin was inflamed and shining bright red, but the flames haven't ate through the other layers beneath—in only hurt, and some cold water would heal it.
Kodi rose to his feet quickly and brought up the rifle, the creature staring at him through a window, smiling wickedly, as if he was just toying with him....
Lets see how you like this.
Aiming the rifle at the creature, Kodi aimed long enough to be able to put the sights on the creature before firing, the shot creating a loud bang throughout the complex.

"RRRRAWWWWW!" The bullet hit EVIL in the shoulder, throwing him back. He fell down and began to slowly crawl away. He looked over his shoulder, making sure the man wasn't following. The daybreak was getting closer.

He was no expert pilot, but Arc certainly did know how to fly the chopper. The aircraft flew above the trees swiftly, but came to a hover once they here a decent ways in. Looking down, Arc seen the local hunting lodge, and a pretty good spot to land in the small parking lot. Easing the throttle down, the helicopter slowly decended toward the ground. But as he did this, Arc sensed something in the forest, and his arm had instintivly jerked to one side, which knicked a power pole just enough to send the bird toward the treeline. There was a loud scrape as it moved across the parking lot, and an an even louder ripping sound when the blades completely smash off upon hitting all of the trees.
The sides impact had knocked all of the windows out of the helicopter, but the belts were just enough to keep the duo from getting torn out of the passenger window. As the silence overcame the whole scene now, Arc hadnt sensed anything from the forest anymore, mystve ran off. But what he did smell was fuel, and glancing in the mirror, he could see the lines were leaking out at a constant enough stream to leave a flameable trail when it was punctured. Within the next five seconds, Arc had been out of the downed aircraft and around the side, already ripping open Annas doors, as it was all dented from the crash. "Were leaking fuel, lets get inside the lodge just to be safe."

As Anna and Arc rushed into the lodge, Anna had held the door opened long enough to let him pass through when it was suddenly ripped out of her grasp and slammed shut, the metal doors scrunched and crushed so it would be impossible to get out unless Arc did something about it. But that was the fartherst thing from their mind when they were staring at this giant, insect-like abomination.
It was massive and looked like four diffrent bugs in one, but that wasn't the only thing unsettling, it made this creepy, low hiss and growl when it screeched out in Anna's face. As it did, there were more rustling and the sound of dry wings or possibly legs whisping together above.
There were more of the bastards covering the entire ceiling and if Arc even attempted to open the door it would sick them all on them in one go and she doubted he could take care of anything that strong in those numbers. Anna slowly backed away as did Arc, putting her hand out a little infront of him to keep him at bay.
"Go toward the stairs..." Anna said through a low, clenched voice.

His sense had all be trained on the forest at the time, and then getting away from the wreck outside before it exploded. By the time Arc and Anna were inside, he began to sense something in there with them, but theyre eyes seen it first. It looked like something new, something he hadnt seen before. The BSAA had a pretty extensive database of BOW recorded, but this was something that seemed indiginous to the Arklay Forest area, maybe it was the passing of winter that drew them closer to buildings for warmth.
But regardless of what they were, Arc listened to Anna, and ran for the stairs in a silent crouch, making sure to keep his steps light and adjacent to the floor smoothly. The more steps he went up, the more the large insects shifted with every step they took. As Arc got upstairs, the ceiling was clear, and to theyre luck, the windows had already been boarded up. If they were going to attack them, it would be from the stairs. Personally, Arc wanted to fight, but he wasnt as quick as he thought. Only strong, and theyre was way too many of them to take them all on. They looked really fast, too, and had wings, something that he didnt have.

As they scrambled upstairs, Anna shivered at the scratching noises coming from downstairs until they began to fade away as they moved farther away from the building. There were little slivers of light peeking through the boarded windows when Anna had noticed the lodge's bedroom doors were all opened and strangely there was nothing in the hallway. It was peculiar, silent, wide opened doors, empty hall. A sense of disease had made Anna's stomach muscle tighten and her stomach began it's churn over and over again.
"I don't like the silence..." she whispered, pulling her side arm out of it's holster and cautiously pressing on through the dimly lit hallway.
Arc had moved behind her, she could only assume he was trying to sense something, anything. Maybe it was all just paranoia, but it just didn't seem right. As they continued toward the next hall, there were eggsacks that completely devoured the next set of stairs. They almost seemed to have been pulsating which made more discomfort for the duo. They needed to keep moving, find another route out since they were chased from the first floor and denied acess to the damn kitchen.
"I shoulda just let you keep going..." she mumbled.

The other set of stairs had lead to the attic floor, and another to the storage garage on the first floor. The eggs blocked the path, either way, and they didnt look to be hatching anytime soon. It was very ominous, just watching them, sensing their breathing every time they shook a bit. If worst came to worst, however, they could always torch the whole breeding ground. The walls of the lodge had been varnished in a flame retardant coating, so the risk of burning the place to the ground was very small.
The silence was actually assuring, as there hadnt been danger in the other room. At least none that Arc could sense. If they wanted to loot around for a trace of ammunition, or any supplies for that matter, now would be the time. For safety purposes, Arc moved back closer to the stairs, keeping a close eye in their direction in case the creatures below happened to be feeling a little hungry. If they were trying to stay warm, now would be a great time to be moving around, as it was a very warm day. Even though they werent too high up on the mountain yet, the sun had already risen into the sky, making it even warmer then I should be this winter. "Take a look around, grab whatever you can. Ill watch the stairs, and think of a way out of here. Going back the way we came wont be possible, I dont like the sounds coming from down there..."

Anna nodded and ventured off into one of the nearby rooms in search of anything useful. The eggs seemed to have been far from hatching, those insect creatures were still downstairs so the only thing left to do was scavenge. Upon entering one of the rooms, there'd been the contents of a suitcase strewn along the ground and the bed. Some spent rounds had cluttered the desk nearby as well, none of them useful.
Another item to note was a pornographic magazine, no, two of them, stacked into one another. Anna rolled her eyes and sighed.
"Men," she muttered before stopping to see there was a jacket hanging on the back of a chair. There was a little dried blood on it, but it was wearble. Grasping onto it, she slung it over her shoulder, intended on handing it to her buddy since his hoodie was so worn and torn up and winter was crueler and harsher than normal this year, it'd be a good idea to bundle up.
Moving over to the next room, there was neatly stacked suitcases in the corner. They were swollen, obviously whoever they belonged to hadn't unpacked yet. Moving along there, she'd crouched down and unzipped one of them. The contents inside consisted of women's clothing.
Grasping ahold of the suitcase, she pulled it out of the stack and pulled it over the bed, unzipping it further and pulling clothing out. There was a long, white tanktop in her size, so she put it aside. A cropped, short, black vest too. The rest of the clothing had been too clingy and the jeans were a size or two too small. She knew damn well she wasn't squeezing her middle aged ass into them.
Rummaging through the other suitcase, there'd been men's clothing. It was all meant for an older man, which Anna had to question the age group of the couple. That's when she'd found a photograph inside of one of the pockets. It was of an older man and his family. His wife didn't appear to be wearing any of the clothing in the other suitcase.
Shaking her head, she put it back in the pouch and moved along to the next room. Before going in, she'd tossed the jacket to Arc.
"Here, found this. Found me a new shirt too," she informed him before disappearing into the next room. Inside this room were empty suitcases but a couple of bottles of Jack Daniels and some arts and crafts.
This was certainly out of palce for a hunting lodge. Dwelling on that, Anna reached up to her head to scratch and felt a sticky mess meshing up against a nice chunk of her ponytail. Freezing in place, she pulled at it and much to her dismay there was a wadded up piece of chewing gum in her hair.
"The f**k...?!" she breathed, pulling at it some more. Suddenly it all came back to her. Before the underground fight, she'd stuck her gum behind her ear. It must've gotten in her hair sometime afterwards. Cursing under her breath, she kept pulling until ultimately she spotted a pair of scissors. Reaching for them, she'd wandered over into one of the bathroom near unaware of the undead presence on the otherside of the room.
Closing the bathroom door behind her, she'd made a quick change with her old shirt and tanktop, replacing it with the longer, cleaner one and the vest. Buttoning it up, she pulled the leather jacket back on before taking another look to see it had a cotton hood attatched to it.
"Well I'll be...why didn't I notice that before? My ears were f**kin poppin and freezing in the chopper..." she said before pulling her holsters on over it. When she was finished with that, she'd looked into the mirror which was blood splattered. Eyes widening, she'd slowly turned around to see there was also blood splatter on the shower curtains.
Pushing the curtains aside she'd found a body lying in the tub. Half of it's face was missing and a shotgun was still in their hands, barrel facing upward. There was also a large chunk of flesh missing from it's neck. Which explains the mirror, from what she was able to sum up.
Shaking her head, she pulled a towel off the ring nearby and wiped at the blood. Picking up the scissors, she'd began snipping away at her ponytail. Cutting an inch or two but leaving it uneven and choppy , resting around her shoulders a little.
The zombie outside the bathroom had been crawling toward the door before pulling itself up to it's feet. Shuffling toward the half closed door, it's slipped and stumbled into it, sending itself falling ontop of Anna.
"WOAH s***!" she gasped, hitting the ground with a loud thud and smashing her elbows into the tiled floor as she pushed her hands onto the sides of it's head to keep it's gaping mouth at bay.

The sounds of the insects down the stairs hed been getting inside Arcs head, the flickering of legs, groany buzzing, the sick tone. He stared down the steps, intently, almost wanting one of them to show itself so that he didnt have to keep picturing them. It wasnt enough to frenzy him, but it was enough to make him hate them. It seemed like he was just intently listening to the sounds, getting louder and louder with each passing second. Could have been five minutes, could have been an hour, theres no way he wouldve known.
But when Anna spoke out, tossing him the jacket, Arc snapped back into reality, and caught it, nodding to her. Pulling off the hoody from him, he used his knife to cut away the sleeves, so he wouldnt be too hot wearing it and the jacket at the same time. With this, he could use the hood on it, as well as keep warm with the jacket. It covered up all of his scaring, which was a larger reason for needed one, second to keeping himself from freezing when he was higher in the mountains. Arc did go up there often, to hunt, or just to visit a friend
The buzzing continued, and then it was all that Arc could hear once again. Finally, he decided to go down the stairs. If he kept quiet, maybe the insects wouldnt even know he was there. Most of the infected didnt pay much attention to him, there wasnt enough human inside to let them know hes worth it. Its only when he gets close enough that they start realizing.
However, before Arc could even get down the stairs, he heard Anna yell out. Quickly rushing for the second floor, Arc barged into the room, seeing the infected trying to take a bite out of Anna. He grabbed the living corpse by the legs, tossing it into the barricaded window. With the force that he applied, the body smashed through the boards, and a ray of sunlight shot into the room, lighting it up completely now. Holding out his arm to lift Anna up, Arc spoke out. "Get what you needed? We need to get out of here, make tracks while its still daylight. Its gonna be a long trip to Stoneville on foot, so I say we head on up the mountain just a few miles north of here, I have a friend who could give us a ride." Arc was intending to avoid conversation about going to the mansion they talked about earlier. He didnt want to work on an instinct, getting Anna back to her family was more important than anything right now.

Anna grasped onto Arc's hand and was pulled back up to her feet after he'd rid of the zombie. She'd dusted herself off and pointed at the bathtub before moving out of the bathroom altogether. "Thanks, oh, there's a shotgun in there," she told him before moving into the hallway.
As she did, the egg sacks had felt the warmth and sudden light exposed from the broken barricade. As such they began to tear and hatch. Anna had pulled on her jacket a bit when she'd heard the disgusting squishy noise.
Looking over, she'd quickly grasped onto her own shotgun and called back to Arc.
"The eggs, they're hatching!"

After hearing the sound upstairs, Arc concluded exactly what it was, and nabbed the shotgun from the tub. Only held four shells, given one of them had been fired, three more left. It was a little used, worn out even, but would still fire if needed. Coming out into the hallway with Anna, he looked at the stairwell, seeing the eggs hatching. The sunlight that came from the break in the window had been giving them enough warmth to finish incubation, seeing the light woke them up. Arc had still been a little frenzied from the recent incident, but now he was ready to fight.
Seeing the creatures that came from the eggs, Arc then knew exactly what they were. The ones downstairs were overmatured, even deprived of nutriants. But these upstairs were ready to kill, and they smelled Anna and Arc the second they hatched. One of them lunged at the duo, and a shotgun blast rang off. Another jumped, and another shot was blasted. Anna was doing a good job at keeping them back on her own, but a well placed shot from Arc took out two of them sharing an egg side by side before they could fully hatch. Only half of them had hatched, the rest underneith were still blocking the way.
Firing off his second last shot, Arc had an idea. As another one of them jumped at him, he didnt fire, just dodge out of the way, rolling across the floor. Snatching the lighter he seen on the table, he drove it down the barrel of the gun, and then aimed it at the remaining unhatched eggs. That second, the gun fired, and a burst of flamed ignited the patch of eggs, setting them ablaze. Arc smashed the shotgun into one of the monsters that jumped at him again, and then through the gun into the fire as it was broken now. Pulling out his knife, he yelled to Anna. "Ill cover you, go."

When Arc told Anna to go on, she wasted no time and immediately went leaping over the eggsacks and scrambling upstairs until she came to a single doorway. She could tell by the cracks beneath it that it was completely dark. Judging by how cold it was outside, despite the sunshine, she knew it'd be even colder inside.
Pulling her flashlight out, she'd looked back downstairs, Arc was finishing things up with the hatchlings. She figured she'd may as well clean out the attic then. Grasping at the knob, she'd twisted and heard a faint click, it was unlocked.
Moving inside, she quickly aimed the flashlight beam upward and pointed her sidearm upwards only to find it completely barren on the ceiling. She looked around, it was quite spacious and very much empty. Lowering her gun, she'd blinked before moving in further.
She suddenly heard a low, weeping, noise. From where she stood, she could see someone was peeking out from behind an old box. They suddenly yelped and hid back behind the box again.
"Hello...?" she asked.
