The old man had knitted his bushy eyebrows together. He could tell these two weren't buying it, even though what he was selling was one hundred percent true.
"My granddaughter, Melanie, she and I were trying to make it to Stoneville, we had gotten a radio signal from several checkpoints in the cabin we were staying in...only oen of them had enough supply and food for us to go to but when we decided to pack up and leave, there were mountain lions. They scared her away and I think she might have gone back to the cabin, please, help me find her, she's all I've got left," he told Arc and Anna.
Anna didn't wait for Arc to respond. She decided that he was telling the truth, she could tell by his body language and his tone, that he wasn't BSing.
"Alright, we'll help, we'll even escort you back to the checkpoint in Stoneville. That's where we were heading an---" she was quickly cut off as the sound of a child's scream had echoed through the quiet forest.
"MELANIE!" the old man gasped, running in the direction the voice came from.
Anna booked it after him, Arc following suit. As they were running, the old man halted suddenly, forcing Anna to slam into his back, both hurdling down. Muttering several explicitives, Anna looked over to see some big ass insect hissing at them. It looked like a giant hissing roach.
Shuddering, she heard the scratching of numerous others scurrying out from behind trees and rocks.
"Gross, gross, f**kin' gross..."

Nodding his head in the direction of the old man when he spoke, Arc waited for him to show my sort of sign, a clue as to where his daughter might be. Once he mentioned that she was at a mansion, Arc looked east and tried to find out which mansion he was talking about. But before he could sense her, the man went on and one until there was a scream emmited through the forest.
The scream had came when Arc was already onto the little girls presence, along with other things more dangerous. Running after Anna and the old man, they stumbled upon the scene, and it didnt look good. The little girl had been surrounded by those insect creatures, and more had been coming toward them. It was impossible to fight them all quick enough to save the mans daughter, so Arc did the only other thing he could think of. Running and jumping high into the air, he swung himself over a large percentage of the creatures, and picked up Melanie. Holding onto her with on arm over his shoulder, Arc fended off the insects with his knife. No that they were all attracted to the both of them, Arc hopes that Anna would cover him while he made his way back to the pair.

While the roaches had been straggling to get to their prey, one of them had burst into slime and pieces when it was hit with a spray from Anna's shotgun blast. She cocked the weapon immediately and sent off another round into a nearing one. The old man had struggled but actively smacked one with the iron rod he acquired and a disgusting crunch could be made out from the blow.
They weren't too hard to take out, really, but they were super gross and Anna couldn't help but feel acid rise to the back of her throat.
"This is f**king groooossss!"

The girl couldnt tell if she was being saved, or if she was being taken away by somebody, because Arc bolted up into a tree. There was a cluster of branches about three stories above, and he used them to hide the little girl just while he could get down and take care of the creatures with Anna and the older man. The second she was placed down, Arc leaped from the tree, and implanted his knife into one of the insects. Green acidic blood leaked from the wound, and a screech filled the air. He had his sunglasses on, so the old man wouldnt be able to see his eyes, but Arc couldnt be held responsible for anything he done while under the influence.

When Anna seen Arc going into "Infection mode" she'd grasped onto the old man's arm and pulled him behind one of the trees to protect him and herself from Arc's indrect wraith. The old man had peeked around the tree, eyes widened as he trembled slight watching Arc slaughter the giant insects. Anna pulled him back out of view and gestured for him to stay put.
"He..uh, he rages alot, stay out of his way when he's ****ed off," she warned, trying to make up an excuse for his sudden actions.
"What is he...?!"
"A war vet?" she tried.
"Grandpa! Help!" came the child's cry from above. Looking up, they couldn't see anything but a small shoe and leg. The little girlw as sobbing and crying for her grandfather as of now.

One after another, the insects had been killed off with stabs and swipes from the large hunting knife. Arc had been almost enjoying himself, letting the dangerous combat high take him over as the blood covered the forest a natural green. Some of them had latched onto him, but never stayed on long enough to bite a chunk out. Arc would throw them off, and than tear them to pieces with the blade. After about a few minutes of battling, it was finally over, and he sheathed his knife. Instantly, Arc climbed back into the tree, and picked up the little girl, who struggled to free herself, knowing that he was infected, crazy even.
As the girl ran to her grandfather, Arc put his hood back up, and than continued down the path. He didnt want anything to do with the newcomers, not until he had a clear head at least. The idealistic part of him wanted to keep the secret out of reach from anybody he didnt trust, and right now, he didnt trust the old man. He could go back where he came, and tell everybody what he saw, and that would create stories that he would have to deal with by the end of it. Whether they tagged along or not to Stoneville with them, Arc didnt really care, so long as he was able to keep himself calm and collective by the time he was around all of those people. He didnt want a bloodbath, it was risky enough just staying with Anna.

The old man embraced the child tightly but before he could thank Arc, he'd walked away with his hood up, quietly and sternly. Anna watched him before looking back at the old man and rubbing the back of her neck a little.
"About that..." she trailed off.
The man shook his head and hugged the child again. "There's no need to explain...it doesn't matter how he did it, he saved the last piece of my family and that's all that matters. He shot the roaches up like a marksman," he explained as the little girl looked up at her grandfather.
She smiled a little and nodded knowing her grandpa would have wanted her to. She was very close to her grandfather, practically in sinc with him so she understood.
Anna smiled and gestured for them to follow. "Right, what a marksman at that. C'mon, we should follow but uh, keep a distance from him...here, I have a spare handgun, I don't have but a clip left though, so, use it wisely."
The man took it gratefully. "I've used them before. I used t be an officer in my day. Thank you, really," he told her.
"No problem, I'll be right back, gonna see if my buddy is alright," she told him, picking up the pace to catch up with Arc ahead.

Walking down the path, it had been getting darker out quickly. There was almost a need for a flashlight at this point, but he didnt have one, nor would he need one. Arc thought about Anna and the other two, they would almost need to depend on a light to guide them. But he kept walking onward, not waiting up for anybody, just keeping to the path and an eye out for anything hostile. The moonlight had been sparse, it was a very dark night, light hint of frosty air from the mountain to cover the already blind spots through the trees.
It wasnt until he heard footsteps behind him that Arc knew his friend was catching up, only than he cut back his pace a little to allow her to catch up. Before she could get in sight however, or even make any sort of comment on the situation, Arc spoke out in the most quiet, chilling voice he could rust up at the moment. "Im finding it harder and harder everyday to trust people. If those two are coming along with us, you make sure to keep an eye on them. If the old man tries anything suspicious, dont bother telling me, just deal with it. Because if I intervein, it wont end pleasant for either of us..." With those words spoken, the group moved through the woods, getting closer and closer to Stoneville.

The Challenger pulled up to the hunting lodge, the sound of the engine sounding through the forest. As soon as Samuel got it into place under an awning, he cut the engine and the silence flooded around them. He looked toward the building and then the road behind them. They had been able to see it through the trees for a bit, and could see a ways down the road from their current position. He was looking to see if they had been followed. So far, it didn’t seem like it.
“Whatcha think? Lay low here for a bit, or just scrounge for supplies?” He asked her as he got out. Either way, he was going to get out and stretch his legs, take a look around. Probably go inside and check it out for anything useful. Five minutes if they decided to stay. Just long enough to top off their gas tank before they left. He wanted to keep it full as often as possible. Better gas mileage that way. Just because they had a good stock didn’t mean it would last forever.

[Samuel and Zoe arrive at the Big Bear Lodge from the River Fire and Rescue Station]
"Definitely check it out and if it is good enough, we should lay low." Zoe said, stepping out of the car and stretching. She put her rifle on the seat and twisted her back until she felt a pop and the tension release. It wasn't a long drive from where they had been, but it had been tense with Zoe spending half the time facing backwards looking for black SUV's that could be following.
"Plus if we keep going, would they be able to see our head lights? It may give us away, even if we keep head of them. I'd rather them not know that we are out here."
The lodge was just that, a small wooden building that served as a wayover place for most hunters. They'd have to be careful just walking in. Anyone in there was probably armed. "I'll walk around the outside to look for bloodsmears on the doors or any broken entry point."

“Good idea. I’ll go that way, you go this way.” He said, pointing in said directions as he took off toward one of them with the axe in hand, his revolver on his belt. He held the axe up, ready to swing at something if it popped out at him. He walked around the right side of the house after seeing that the door and front windows were still intact. His side windows were intact, but as he rounded the corner he saw blood spatter and a body hanging out the back window. It wasn’t moving, but he knew how those things worked. Almost like they were smart enough to set a trap for an unsuspecting person.
He let out a low whistle for Zoe, not wanting to take any action until he had someone to back him up.

Zoe came around the other side of the building when she heard Samuel's whistle. For the most part, the side of the lodge was locked up and the windows were still intact... but there were some bloody handprints on the door at her side of the building. From the ground, Zoe couldn't tell if the owner of those handprints had been able to get in or not.
The one thing that did concern her was that the lodge was not built on a solid concrete slab. Instead, it was build on a raised platform. While it probably did wonders for the view, it also created crawlspaces for the undead to get into. It was one thing facing them as they shambled toward you... another when they came up through the ground at you.
As she rounded the corner, she saw Samuel looking at a window long the back. It had a bloody corpse hanging out of it. Suddenly, Zoe just wanted to get in the car and drive away, but she knew that they had to check this place out. A hunting lodge could have ammo and she was running low after all that happened at the Jefferson Estate.
"I got your back." And she meant it. She held her revolver in one hand and her machete in the other. She stepped in beside Samuel, but behind him, watching as he headed toward the lodge.

Samuel gave a slight nod to Zoe and took a step forward, using the head of the axe to poke at the body. It didn’t move, save for the slight swaying caused by Samuel’s prodding. He did it again, this time harder, the metal axe head hitting the body’s skull. It suddenly sprang to life and started to reach out to him. Putting a hand up to stop Zoe from taking a shot, he lined up the axe like a woodcutter splitting a log, and raised his arms.
The impact let out a loud cracking noise, and the zombie went still as blood poured down into a puddle on the ground.
“Front door?” He asked. They would check it out real quick, together. And then decide if they were going to stay a while or get going.

Zoe nodded. "Front door." She back up a bit and then followed Samuel around to the front of the lodge. No telling what was in there or what would come spilling out when they opened the door. But Zoe knew one thing...
They were probably better off facing the undead than facing those men in the SUV's. She put her revolver away and switched the machete to her other hand. With her offhand free, she grabbed the flashlight from her belt and flicked it on. Maybe it was just the undead hanging out the window, but she only now noticed how still it was. The sun was dropping below the mountains and Zoe felt a cold crisp air hit her skin, making it pucker. A shudder ran down her back, but she didn't know if it was the air... or dread.
She climbed up the steps to the front porch and then looked inside the windows. Most were covered and dirty, but she couldn't see anyone or anything inside.
That didn't mean they weren't there.
"I'll open the door", she said when Samuel was ready. Carefully, she pulled back on the screen door and then slide the latch forward so that it locked into place. Slowly, with a slightly shaking hand, she reached out and turned the doorknob. It was unlocked so she turned it and quickly retreated.
The solid oak door opened only a few inches and stopped. Zoe listened for any sound coming from inside, but after a few seconds, she could only hear the beating of her heart and the blood rushing through her ears.

Samuel froze and listened for a few seconds next to Zoe as the door opened, and when he couldn’t hear anything, he decided to open the door the rest of the way.
Planting a foot to the ground, he reached up with the other and kicked the door. There was a loud crash and the door opened a bit more. When he pushed on it more, they heard something sliding along the floor. When Samuel looked inside, he could see the bookshelf that had been put there to brace the door closed.
He hefted his axe and walked inside, instantly scanning the area and seeing a trail of blood. No, more like a pool in the middle of the main room. Luckily, it wasn’t very large. There was a door to the side, Samuel was assuming that was the bedroom. He didn’t see any other zombies, but he also didn’t see the half of one hanging out the window. It must have been in the bedroom.
“Circle the room and we’ll check the bedroom last.” He said, moving to the right and hugging the wall as he took a look around. Aside from the blood pool, he wasn’t seeing much.
