Without his glasses, Hal didnt feel comfortable at all. However, this went away when he saw the girls confused expression. It was like she was a 2 year old trapped in the body of a young teenager. She didnt know how to speak, nor fairly basic things such as what reading glasses are. This interested him the most, but at the same time, was really quite depressing. Grabbing the glasses, Hal put them back on his face, and then explained. Seemingly, the little girl was soaking up some sort of education, or else she wouldnt be alive today. "The are what you call glasses. Also called eyeglasses formally, spectacles informally. Theyre frames bearing lenses worn in front of the eyes for vision correction. Your eyes are built just fine, if they seem blurry to you. I suffer from mild presbyopia, and use the glasses to help me see better. Luckily, I have some spare lenses in case these ones ever decide to break on me..." But Hal feared that most of this was just going over the girls head...
~~~
Whoever that man was definitely seemed to be pretty hardened, and kept things to himself. There was no way id learn his story just by simply asking, a man much like myself. But that girl on the rooftop, who was she exactly, and why would anybody be after her? Maybe the assailents were with Tricell, sent to capture her for reproduction purposes. Children are very, very rare. Especially since after the 1998 outbreak. Any child that lived through that mess would have to be special, and mean a lot to the parents. Whoever they were, that is.
Chinook saw a few undead stumble out from the hallway, but didnt fire at them. Instead, he just bolted for the staircase, and headed right for one of the rooms that he needed power to access. Since the building was offline earlier, the electronic doors werent able to be opened, and he wasnt willing to risk explosives. But the contents in the room was the database from the Raccoon City Times. All of theyre sources, raw footage, data, everything had been in there. Since it was the only world news broadcasting station after 2009, it would no doubt house nothing short of useful information on tracking down survivors. More importantly, the ones that were still alive.
Getting up the to electronically locked door, Chinook took out a keycard from his pocket, and swiped it through the reader. The door opened up, and he quickly went inside, holding it open with a pile of newspapers. The first place he looked were the helicopter logs. Logs were kept everything it took off and landed at different locations. Since it was done digitally at the time, an escape helicopter would still have coordinated to where it was heading, or rather, planned to be heading. This was good enough of a clue of where to search next. With the location embedded in his head, Chinook then left the room, and moved back up the stairs. It was a bit of a painful trek, but upon reaching the rooftop staircase, he made sure it was safe it enter without any infected catching onto his location from before.
Arriving onto the rooftop, he could see Hal and the little girl talking to eachother. But closer inspection showed that she didnt do any of the chatter, and only listened intently. This little girl puzzled him, as it was the first time he had seen a child living and breathing, other then his own. As Hal noticed the soldier, he waited for him to speak out, obviously not seeing the other man with him. Chinook didnt bother bringing up anything else, for the sole reason as it wasnt important, and wasnt proved to be true. If anything was after the little girl, they would have to try real hard to get passed him. Hal spoke out impatiently, but curious and enthusiastic. "Chinook, find anything that might help track down their whereabouts?"
Chinook glanced quickly at the small girl before turning to Hal.
"Yes actually. The records that I found show several evac choppers leaving the area for Oak Harbor Washington. Beyond that, the trail gets hazy, but it could be worth looking into." Chinook paused and took a cigarette out of his jacket pocket. Lighting it he inhaled deeply and walked up to Hal and the girl. "I'm no doc, but she looks pretty pale. Maybe we should get her something to eat on the way."
Serenity had been listening calmly to Chinook speak. It appeared they were planning on going somewhere. She looked to the door. Where was Caine? Serenity perked her head up when she heard the word eat and look up at Chinook. She took a step towards him and grasped her hands behind her back.
Exhaling a puff of smoke, Chinook raised an eyebrow at the girls response. It was the first reaction he had seen from her the whole time she was with them. Chinook looked up to Hal for confirmation.
Well, it was great to know that somebody is one step closer to finding what theyre looking for. The man has been through quite a bit, but hasnt once let himself down at all. He knew his family were still alive, and even if they werent, it wasnt going to stop him from finding the truth. Hal was lucky to have found the man. It was only about a week after the outbreak started, and Raccoon City had been taken over. The helicopter was in Vegas, thats where Hal came from. Hes been through quite a bit within the first week of the outbreak, but when everything seemed to be going as planned, time goes by quickly. Still, he was BSAA, and had a job to do. Taking his valuable time to give it away was something else, after all, he still had a certain someone to provide backup for.
After hearing Chinook speak out the plan, Hal looked at his watch, seeing it was just nearing eight in the morning. By this time, the choppers power generators would be fully charged. Just a quick refuel, and they could go anywhere. "Washington? Are you posi- No, of course your not, but it seems like a great place to start looking. Especially since its a large scale island, easy for a team to clear out over time. I wouldnt be surprised if they started already, to be quite honest. Oh, and John, could you get away from that kid with the cigarette? Just because the world ended doesnt mean second hand smoke is harmless..."
As he spoke out, Hal moved into the chopper, just waiting for Chinook to finish up his smoke. From here, he went right to the pilots seat, and powered on the controls. Instantly, the blades started to spin, but to reduce power he put it onto 50% energy consumption until they got going in the air. For the time being, Hal turned on his computer, and then signed into the BSAA security network via satalite link. Washington was on the network for safezones, but none of them had been in contact with the BSAA headquarters yet. Maybe this would work out better for both of them.
Chinook sighed. That was Hal, always worried about the little details. When they had first teamed up, Hal seemed to have an endless list of life threatening conditions that smoking caused. Each of them seemed like a more painful and worse way to die then the last. Chinook didn't really care though. When smoking was higher on the list of things that could kill you then global bio-terrorism and zombies, then maybe he would think about quiting. Caution with the girl though, Chinook could understand that. Kneeling down next to her, Chinook gave her a good look over. Spotting the patch on her dress that said Serenity, Chinook hazarded a guess.
"Serenity huh? That your name?" The girl didn't really respond, although she did seem to pay more attention to him when he said Serenity. She looked up to him and cocked her head to the side. "Ok, well, since you won't speak and I don't want to just call you girl, and since that patch is sown into your dress like it's supposed to be seen, let's go with Serenity. Why don't you follow Hal into the chopper there and I'll be there in a moment." The girl seemed to respond to something he said and to the motion he made towards the chopper. In response, she turned without a word and walked to it. Chinook sighed. She was going to be a hard one to figure out.
Serenity climbed into the chopper. As soon as she stepped inside, she immediately lost her temporary sense of purpose and looked around for something to do. Spotting Hal, she walked up behind him. Standing at his shoulder, she attempted to peer over him at what he was working on. Not quite able to see, Serenity decided to try to get a better look. Lifting Hal's arm, she squeezed in underneath it, sitting between him and his laptop, studying the screen, trying to understand what all of the symbols meant.
The screen showed a satalite image of Washington, but it wasnt live. Thermal imaging shown several days ago that there had been activity recently, which was a good sign, or a bad sign. The body temperature in the infected were the same as humans for the most part, at least for another few months. After this, they would finally be able to do some filter scans on the area. But that wasnt important right now, they were going there regardless. Hal set a GPS point for the approximate destination, and then switched back onto his personal file.
As the fingers started typing, Hal was unaware that the little girl had been approaching him from behind in the chopper. He was too busy typing away, but once she had herself in front of the screen, a loss of temper was starting to become more and more apparent. However, this was Hal, he was good at keeping calm, and spoke out in a friendly voice. "Its a story im writing for my boss, have to do something all this besides fly the helicopter. Its not finished yet, so if it doesnt make sense to you, dont fret..." Of course, this was a lie, it was something much more important then just some story. But chances are, this girl couldnt even read it anyways. The chopper blades had fully began to spin, and Hal radioed Chinook to get inside as soon as he can. "Were ready for take off, finish up whatever your doing and get inside. Close the hatch behind you!"
Chinook sighed as he heard Hal buz in over the radio. It wasn't that he didn't want to get out searching for his family as soon as possible, he was simply afraid, afraid that he wouldn't find them. Taking one final drag of his cigarette, Chinook flicked it over the side of the building. Straightening his jacket around his shoulders, Chinook turned and began walking towards the chopper. Reaching it, he stepped up inside. Spotting the girl sitting with Hal, Chinook raised an eyebrow. He walked up to them and tapped Hal on the shoulder. In response, Hal gave him a look that said help. Smiling, Chinook tapped the girl on the shoulder now. She turned and looked at him.
"Hey, why don't you come and sit back here with me. Hal's gotta fly the chopper and it could be dangerous for you to be up here." Motioning for the girl to follow him, she paused for a moment, but eventually, slid out of Hal's lap and followed Chinook to the back of the chopper where they took a seat.
"Damnit, how could they get away." Jim swore under his breath as he and his men left the Times building. His men didn't dare say a word, they knew better. Suddenly, something dropped down in front of the lieutenant. Walking up to it, the lieutenant stooped over to get a better look.
"A cigarette butt?" Turning, Jim craned his neck to look up. Listening, he could barely make out the sound of a helicopter. "They were on the roof. Radio command. Tell them it is highly probable that the Serenity Project is in a chopper leaving the Raccoon City Times building. I want eyes on that chopper. I want to know where they're going before they do, is that clear?"
"Yes sir!" Jim scowled up at the building. They had evaded him this time. It wouldn't happen again.
The helicopter finally lifted off the ground, and angled itself into the sky, gaining more and more altitude over time. Hal didnt rely to heavily on the automated systems, especially not until they got on the right chorus for Oak Harbor. It would be quite the flight, but stopping for a refuel wouldnt happen so long as they kept at a slow enough speed. Once the chopper was at a good steady altitude, Hal slipped the controls into autopilot, and then lay back in his seat. It had been several days since hed even closed his eyes, little lone had a decent sleep. There was a lot of traviling over the last few days, but aside from that, there was something on his mind. Leaving Raccoon City meant he was leaving contact with a close friend. Hal just hoped that he would understand that others needed his assistance, wasnt something he had much control over in the first place.
Tuning into his radio, Hal adjusted the headpiece over his mouth, and then fixed in the frequency. After about a minute of finding a strong signal, he spoke out, glancing back to make sure Chinook knew that he was on a live radio feed for his own headset if he needed to tune in. "This is Hal, do you read me? Come in, Griff, do you read me?" Seeing as he must be away from his radio, which wasnt as uncommon as one would think, Hal switched into memory mode, and would leave him a message through on his satalite codec. "Listen Griff, im going to be out of the city for a couple of days. Radio in if you need anything, and ill update you on my location. Dont worry, im still using the private frequency, so the BSAA isnt going to be listening in on our radio calls, its okay. Keep yourself alive, please and thank you?"
