“I think your lucky I got rid of the food at my place when I did. Or we could have slept on a bed of mold.” He said. No telling how much it would have grown over the course of ten years. Daniel was over at the room service cart, looking under the covers to see what was on the trays. He was pretty sure he found his. And if not, someone was going to lose it. Picking up the tray and bringing it to the table, he set it down and uncovered a double cheeseburger with a side of fries. On the under side of the cart was a chilled six pack of soda.
Popping open a can and taking a swig, he looked over to Elijha and thought.
“Well, twenty four divided by three is eight. Say one person goes to sleep every eight hours, two awake at all times, Rio sleeps whenever the hell she wants.” He said, thinking about it. If he slept now, Elijha and Malcolm would be awake for eight hours. Then, Malcolm could sleep, he and Elijha would be awake. Eight hours later, when Malcolm woke up, Elijha could go to sleep. Sixteen hour shifts for everyone, not bad when all they would be doing was sitting here. And if someone had to leave the room, one of them was on hand for that. Easier to stay in the same room to, the only open bed in this room being used by the sleeper. Defeated the purpose of renting two rooms, but it avoided suspicion.
“What do you think?” He said, his mouth partially full. The first meal that didn’t come out of a package with military designation or nutritional facts on it in over a week. It was damn good.

"I'll be back in a few, mine is the spicy prawn dish."
Malcom took his new clothing into the other room to try them out whilst everyone ate. The boots and snowgear seemed to fit perfectly, though he'd have to try them with a gun later to test their combat readiness. He packed them back up and stepped back in with the rest of the group before grabbing his food.
"Sleep schedule sounds good, I've made the room a little more combat ready while you were out shopping, anywhere you reach you can find a weapon handy, plus the furniture has been moved a little more tactically and I ordered some coffee with the food, I'll leave a pot on before first watch."
He ate in silence as Daniel explained the scheduling plan.
"Sounds good, you or Elijah want to take the first sleep? I'm game for anything. Saving a lot of energy in a hotel room."

Elijha nodded but paused for a minute. "Well three of us will be awake at the same time at one point. Remember that I don't sleep that much. I may need just an hour or two, maybe not. Just depending on how I feel. I can always catch that in the car on the way up to the mountains," she pointed out. She poked around the cart and grinned. "Oh bake potato lovers," she laughed as she pulled out the heavily loaded potato. "You guys shure know how to hit my heart," she laughed as she pulled off a drink, and sat on the bed beside Rio.
"You know I would worry if that steak wasn't cooked," she grinned slightly.
Rio laughed and nodded as she cut into her steak. "Been a while, and I just woke up with a craving for it." She looked around the room, and then at Elijha. "You are quite a surprise in yourself. When did you become a doctor?"
"Not, but after being secluded for most of my life I learn a lot of things. Not to mention I have a few hidden talents. Can't tell if it's because of the virus or if it's natural."
"Photographic memory?"
"And speed reading," she grinned slightly.
"Either way I'm glade. Need a doctor on the team as long as the one with the licenses is out of it." She looked at Malcom. "Hand me your PDA. I want to mark the rout to this cabin. Riko doesn't know where it is. We were seperated for a time at the begining. Uncle found me and took me under his wing. It was a trip to the city that ended his life, and my second brother's. Riko found me and got me out," she explained as she typed away on the PDA. "I never told him about it. I still think he blames me for Allen's death, but he never said anything," she said with a heavy sigh. Once she was done she handed it back, and went back to eating.
Elijha looked at Daniel, and then nodded to Malcom indicating that he should tell Malcom about what had happened. She then went back to eating her food. "I don't think he blames you. He wouldn't be so protective over you either," she said with a smile.

Daniel caught Elijha’s gaze and didn’t react, not wanting to tip off Rio. He took another bite of his cheeseburger and washed it down. Still holding the drink, he stood up.
“Hey, come show me where you hid everything.” He said, motioning for Malcolm. He figured Rio would think he was being paranoid, like always. Mostly true. “Knowing you, someone tries to break in and kill us, we wont be able to find a gun when we need it.” He said. He walked into the next room and Malcolm followed. Walking toward the bathroom, he ushered Malcolm in and shut the door. He looked around for something to mask the noise of the conversation, turning on the sink on as high as it would go.
“Riko’s dead.” He said, his face grim, a hint of sadness in his eyes. Malcolm would know he was talking about the real Riko. “The fake one, he ended up in the lobby, told us everything. Sincell is off our ass as long as we don’t go after them and we keep Art after us. They have some way to track us, Elijha and me. Nothing we can jam or hide.” He said. “Not much else to say, except point out how f**ked we are.” He said. Every angle was thought out, everything was against them. He didn’t even know what to do from here. The lab wouldn’t be hidden from Sincell anymore, they didn’t have any safe place to be in the world.

"Sure thing Danny, got a pistol under each bedside cabinet, two under the centre of each table. That spare shotgun under the bed in case someone gets the drop on you."
Malcom followed Daniel into the bathroom, leaning over to show the gun and knife taped underneath the sink. He turned back fast when the door was shut and Daniel explained the situation to him, leaning against the wall with his arms folded the whole time.
"That's a real kick in the teeth."
He pulled a pack of cigarettes out and offered Daniel one, disconnecting the smoke alarm for a minute whilst he lit up.
"Hell, maybe we should just quit for a while. Let Art and Sincell shoot the hell out of each other and we can do other things, pay off any outstanding debts or something."

Elijha sighed a bit as she leaned up against the headboard. "Are you okay?" Rio asked as she looked up from her finished plate. She stood up from the bed and tested herself a bit before walking the plate to the cart and sat it down. She grabbed a drink and walked to one of the chairs and sat down. She looked over to Elijha and smiled at Rio. "Is everything okay? You look a bit out of it if you don't mind me saying."
"I'm fine," she said with a bit of a sigh. She looked up Rio and returned her smile. She sighed a bit as she looked away and pulled her feet up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. She had messed with her expressions, and had to find another way around her questions. So she figured it was the best time to get what would soon be found out. "My body has never taken to kindly to the cold. I get very weak the longer I'm out in the cold weather. That's why I was always a shut in come winter time," she said. She looked toward the other room and then to Rio.
"You have a lot of issues with your virus . . . oh I'm sorry," she said as she leaned up on the chair.
"It's okay. Remember I was my father's first test subject. There is going to be a lot wrong with me."
"I don't get it. Your father test on you and you turned out fine, but a lot of his subjects from then until now have been screwed up. Why is it now that he is starting to come back with better creations."
"That . . . that I don't know," she said as she laid down on the bed. "Remember that I just met him a couple years ago, and I've been locked away since then. Nearly desposed of before I was rescued," she mumbled under her breath. "Can we change the subject . . . please."
"Sorry," Rio said as she turned to look out the window.

Daniel waved off the offer of a cigarette, trying to think of what they could do.
“Let’s say their serious about everything. That means we can go to the lab without a problem. They don’t know what it is, and they wont bother us. It’ll make it easier to get there and try and fix Rio and me. We can go from there. What I need you to do is fix a device that’ll give off those radio waves that calm Elijha down. It’s how he kept us from killing him down there.” He said. “It needs to be small, easy to hide. Think it’s possible?” He asked.

"I got the right frequency in my PDA, maybe I could buy some com gear from an equipment shop, cheap pack of walkie talkies, nothing too special or expensive. Anyways I could rig them up to send the right signals when we need to."
Malcom took a drag from his cigarette as he plotted the design.
"Why do you ask though? Think they're going to put out her killswitch again?"

Rio looked over to the bed that Elijha laid on. "Are you asleep?"
"That's a stupid question," she mumbled under her breath.
"I'm sorry. I just got a bit carried away. It's hard . . . I mean," Rio trailed off as she turned to look back out the window. She sighed a bit as she leaned up against the table. "I spent all my time in AFDS trying to figure out how your kind tick, and how to stop it."
"My kind." Elijha laughed a bit as she sat up on the bed. "Not like I choose or others this path," she groaned. "I'm going out for a bit," she said as she let the door slam behind her.
"Elijha!" Rio called out. She tried to stand up but instead ended up back in the chair. "Great," she groaned.

Daniel heard the door slam from the bathroom, looking toward the bathroom door and then to Malcolm. He pulled the pistol from his belt and opened the door, sweeping out and looking for the threat.
Only to find that there wasn’t one. Elijha was gone, Rio was still fine on the bed. Elijha had left, for some reason or another. He looked at Rio, about to ask what had happened, but her face told him a bit. Something had happened, it seemed. A fight? Maybe. He had never seen Elijha in a bad mood, and he didn’t know Rio to have a mean streak. So what the hell?
“I’ll be right back.” He said with a sigh. Hardly a good time to be storming off without telling anyone. He slipped the pistol back into the holster hidden by the BDU over shirt and walked to the door, opening it and looking out into the hall. He watched Elijha round a corner, and jogged to catch up.
“Hey!” He said, rounding the corner himself and running to catch up. “What happened, why you taking of all of a sudden?” He asked.

"Great, I'll just stay on guard duty again. Hotel in vegas and I haven't even got to the roulette table yet."
Malcom slumped back at the table and started on his dinner before he left it much longer, his gun was right next to his plate for fast shooting if necessary.
"Not that I don't enjoy your company kid. What happened with Elijah though?"

Rio looked down at the ground and sighed. "I asked her some questions, that I guess . . . I guess I shouldn't have asked them. I worded them extremly wrong, but . . . but I couldn't help it . . . I'm curious. She's everything that we were fighting against with Art, and now . . . now were running from our friends because we stuck with her," she let out a heavy sigh. "All I've been thinking aobut is where we would be if we haven't brought her with. Do you know that Riko and I were tripletts. We had another brother, but he died trying to save me. An now . . . an now some guy is running around in Riko's body, and his brain is out there locked away. I- I miss him," she trailed off.
---------------------------
Elijha sighed and stopped when she heard Daniel. She looked back at him before walking down to the end of the hall. "I know she doesn't mean it, but she could have just stopped talking. It's not like it's my fault that I am what I am. I didn't even know that I was a monster until my father came back around. I always thought I was just a person with a horrible life and bad medical problems. I didn't want this life . . . I didn't want everyone I loved to die because my father wanted to hid me away. You know everyone would be happy if he would have killed me off to begin with."
She shook her head as she looked at the door that lead to the outside stairwell. She reached for the door and stopped. "My life . . . my life has always been hard." She shook her head as she opened the door. "I'm sorry, but I'm not use to all of this . . . in truth even though you guys have lost your freedom because of me. This is a bit more freedom than I am use to. In a way I think I'm freaking out a bit. I'm trying to go with the flow, but I don't think it's working. In fact I think it's just making it worse." Looking out at the night Vegas sky she sighed even more before shutting the door again. "I'm sorry for this, and all the problems I have caused you and your friends."

“You should get off the self loathing stuff, it’s a real downer.” Daniel said, leaning against a wall and taking another look around for a moment. No one was around. Slow day for the hotel, and it looked like Riko was keeping his word for now.
“Monsters are everywhere. Being in a different kind of body doesn’t make a monster. The guy who killed Malcolm’s wife and child was a monster. The guy who killed Rio’s brother and walks around inside what’s left of him is a monster. The guy who walked out on my mother before I was born and left her to die when she gave birth was a monster. And the man who did all of those things to you from the day you were born, he was a monster. Whole load of monsters, and I don’t see any of those qualities in you.” He said.
“We could have left you in the labs. Used you to get us out and killed you. Even turned you into Art when we got back as a science project. But we made a unanimous decision to be decent human beings, because we all saw the same quality in you. Because we‘re not monsters, and neither are you.” He said, focusing on her.
She opened the door, closed it, but didn’t make a move to come back. He looked down at the ground for a moment.
“Freedom is subjective. All of us, you too, have the freedom to make the choice of what to do next. If you wanna leave, you have the freedom to do it.” He said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his car key.
“You can leave, or stay. If you leave, you can take my car, go as far as you can until they catch up to you and you go back into a cage for the rest of your life. Or you can stay with us. Same thing probably happens in the end, but you have cell mates. What do you think?” He asked her. Hoping she would choose to stay.

"Hard to turn off when you feel confused isn't it?" Malcom patted Rio on the shoulder trying to calm her down. "I have that same problem, well, not as a scientist, as a mercenary y'know? Didn't know where to start when I lost my family so I just kept picking up jobs thinking I'd make money and find info. Once you get good at it though it just overrides any other reaction. You made an interesting friend and you just let your curiosity get the better of you. Daniel will talk to her."
He handed her a drink of water and one of the antivirus tablets, might as well get her started on them.
"You'll get your brother back kid. I guarantee it, and I'll put that other guy in a jar to show him what it's like, maybe we can fill it up with vodka and play rave music at it non stop for all the crap he put us through?"

Rio looked at Malcom as he handed her the pills. She looked at them for a bit before she took them. It was hard to believe that she was going to lose her brother not matter what anyone said. She sighed a bit and looked to the door. "It's hard. She has so many answers, but you can't do anything but ask questions. Doing it the way Art or her father does it is barbaric." She shook her head and looked back to Malcom. "I never thought I would be in this position. It's scary." She shook her head as she laid down on the bed. "Not to mention I'm so tired. It's hard to stay awake." She grabbed one of the extra pillows and held it tightly against her. "I'm sorry."
----------------------------------------
Elijha sighed a bit as she turned to look at Daniel. "Like I said with this little bit of freedom I'm still freaking out. I'm not use to it," she said as she waved him down the hall. "I need someone to show me how to actually live freely . . . and in order to do that we need to get my father and your friends off your backs," she pointed out as she followed him down the hall. She looked around as they made their way down the hall, but surprising enough she couldn't feel Riko. Maybe he was actually leaving them alone as he said he would. She sighed a bit before looking up at Daniel.
Her eyes catching something at the end of the hall. Except when she looked at it closer she realized that it wasn't in the hall, but through the window. She moved forward pushing him against the wall as she just barly felt the bullet fly past her own head. She looked back as a picture shattered from the bullet. "We got a problem," she said as she pointed to the picture. "We need to get our stuff and get out of here," she whispered almost as if she was expecting someone else to pop out of one of the rooms.
