The whole time, Caine had been watching the scene unfold from outside the window, the soldiers that burst into the house and secured the area around had been setup with assault rifles and flashlights. But still, none of them would be any the wise, they wouldnt think of checking the siding of the house, only the main parameter. Who were these soldiers, and why did they come so well equiped? At first guess, Caine was sure that the man inside, Jim, had been one of the Umbrella Co workers who were hiding from the rest of the world, and he caught onto the infamous John Micheal Caine before he could even see it coming. Now would be a good time to get out of here, but no, he couldnt just leave the girl.
The window smashed into shards onto the floor, as Caine jumped inside, releasing a flashbang into the room. Within the same four second time frame, he grabbed onto the little girl, covering her eyes from the flash as it enveloped the room. Taking the opportunity to open fire, Caine unloaded a succession of gunshots from his rifle, only enough to clear a path to the backdoor. Not giving the girl much of a chance, he put his hand on her shoulder, and then yelled out an order quickly and clearly. "Follow me!" The both of them quickly left the house through the open backdoor, only have seconds before the solders inside the house responded to the situation with gunfire of their own. In seconds, this whole street would be a hotzone for the infected. But even worse, Caine had the feeling Jim was following them.

Serenity stared curiously as the soldiers began slowly moving through the house. That is, until suddenly there was a crash from her left. Serenity turned just in time to see Caine reaching her and covering her eyes as a loud bang filled the room. Normally, Serenity would feel threatened, but with Caine protecting her, she decided she was alright. A moment later the house erupted in gun shots. Caine was firing. He turned to her and shouted a command. That familiar phrase latched onto Serenity's mind again and the urgency of the situation boosted it.
Running through the house, Serenity followed Caine. Before the men could even react the two of them were out the back door and fleeing down the alley. Serenity was confused, she didn't know why they were running. Jim had been nice. He had fed her, and was very kind. However, she guessed that Caine knew better then she did, that was one thing she had always been taught. Her guardians always know best, so Serenity would listen to him unquestioningly, and follow wherever he led her.
**************
"Sir they got away."
"I can see that." Jim responded angrily. "It doesn't matter, they can't get far on foot. I want you to fan out and find them. We can't loose the Serenity project, she is too valuable. In addition, I want you to gather all of the intel you can on that man. I want to know him better then he knows himself, do you understand me?"
"Sir!"
As the soldiers hustled out of the room, Jim shook his head. Just when he thought things were looking up.

After getting a good ten minutes down the ally alongside the street, Caine de-attached his rifle into three pieces, and slipped them inside his backpack. This had been tightly strapped onto his shoulders, making his mobility effortless. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a thick metal tube, his silencer, and drilled it onto the end of his sidearm as quickly as he could while still keeping a fast pace through the ally. But after this, he stopped, and put his back to the wall in the shadows. The little girl had stopped with him, and done so just as he did. Something told him that she could sense the infected wandering in front of them by one of the homes, trying to claw theyre way inside through the siding.
There was no sound coming from him, aside from the quiet breathing. The nails of the infected brushing against the house were fairly loud, making it obvious that they were more hungry and willing to go the extra mile just for a meal. If Caine was going to kill any of them, it would be quietly and effectively, without drawing any attention to him or the little girl. The walkers didnt seem to be paying attention to the two of them, but something else was on Caines mind, the soldiers. They were probably still coming for them, and without any real evacuation or transport, it would be a tough treck across a ruined city to escape from both ghouls and armed men. The zombies were bad enough.
Just then, Caine got an idea, it was the only thing he could think of. Looking at the little girl, he was going to whisper out his plan, but figured it would probably just go over her head anyways. They needed to get to someplace high in elevation, somewhere in the city. Taking out a small radio from his pocket, Caine checked the battery on it, but slipped it back inside his vest once he saw it was running low. The sound of footsteps appeared not far down the ally, seems there had been other people in the area, soldiers would be an accurate guess. Looking at the side of the house, there was an open window on the second floor, just high enough for the little girl to maybe get a boost inside. Kneeling down on the ground, Caine motioned for the window above them, and spoke out in a low tone. "Get in through that window, hide once your in there. Quickly, now, those soldiers are close."

Serenity looked from Caine to the window, slowly comprehending his meaning. Eventually she walked up to him and waited for help up. When he lifted her, she was just high enough to lean her weight in through the window. Serenity fell daintily into the house. Sitting up, she looked around. She was in a child's bedroom. The house was obviously abandoned as the room was covered in a thick layer of dust, not being touched in some time.
Slowly walking around the room, Serenity spotted something. On the small bed in the room, was a cloth doll. Serenity picked it up. She had never had a doll of her own before, but she knew what they were. Serenity sat down on the bed hugging the doll. From now on, this doll would be her doll, and she would take care of it, like people took care of her.

After the little girl had climbed into the room, the handful of soldiers can springing out from the ally, all having trained guns along the wall. "Where the hell did she go!? We cant let her get away!" The soldiers lowered their weapons, and then split into singles, heading down each side of the house, and the third taking defense in the back.
Meanwhile, Caine jumped from the small gate onto the windowsill of the home, and then pulled himself inside. He saw the men move around the house, and knew they would be cleaning this place out, it was a predicable move. But the only one that wouldve worked, so he would have to make the best of it. Moving up the hardwood stairs, he peeked inside of the childs bedroom, and saw the girl sitting on the bed, holding onto a doll of some kind. She was safe in there, so thats the room he needed to protect. Why the would be after her was beyond any answer, but knowing that it was her life on the line, Caine had to protect her, he felt obligated to her to to safety.
Hearing the front door break open, Caine was sure they would send one of them upstairs, and the other two block the main exits. They could keep running and running, thats what he did best. But now was the time to do what he used to do best. Grabbing a glass orniment from the table along the wall, Caine hurled it toward the top of the stairs. The second it shattered, gunshots were fired in its direction, and he took the opportunity to jump out while they stopped. Shooting off two rounds from his handgun, he managed to hit one of them in the chest and neck, and most likely bleed to death if he didnt get any medical attention. A loud yell came through the house, and the soldiers began to fire off even more ammuniton to the top floor, but Caine dove across into the bathroom. He used the mirror to see activity in the hallway, and waited for the remaining two men to make their move.

Serenity heard gunfire from the hallway, she wondered what was going on. Slowly running her fingers through the dolls hair, she combed it, lovingly? She wasn't sure what the emotion was. She had seen the way mothers treated children. Dolls were a replica of that, so it was that emotion she should strive to replicate correct?
It wasn't long before the gunfire had died down and there was a temporary calm. Her interest peaked, Serenity stood up from the bed and walked slowly to the door. Stepping into the hall, she was blinded as a flashlight was quickly cast over her.
"Sir! Sir! Project located! I repeat, project located! The whereabouts of the hostile are still unknown however." Serenity squinted questioningly at the source of the voice. She heard a clanking of buckles as two men ran to her and knelt down next to her.
"Hi sweetie, we're gonna need you to follow us." One of the men tried to grab Serenity's arm. Serenity pulled away violently. Neither of these men were the one she was with before. The two men looked at each other.
"Sedate her." One of them said. The other produced a needle. Serenity's eye's grew wide. She knew what that was. When she was younger the scientists had used something similar to inject something into her that made her body feel like it was on fire. She backed away defensively. Something clicked in her head. Her breathing increased. Serenity began to worry. This was bad. All of the signs were pointing to one thing. The fire was about to come back.

With the image through the mirror in the bathroom reflecting the whole scene, Caine quickly weaved out back into the hallway with his pistol drawn. Firing a total of six shots, three each hitting the both soldiers nearest to the little girl, dropped them to the ground. The last had entered the hallway, and was about to fire, but suddenly was grabbed by the arm. Caine locked the soldiers arm tightly, but he was able to get off a few bursts before he snapped it downwards and used his shoulder to knock the gun out of his hands. Now holding the sidearm at the soldiers head with both hands, Caine sped out questions, knowing the undead on the streets would be in this house within minutes. "Who do you work for, and why are you after the girl?"
Footsteps from the infected had already started to come up the steps, these ones moving pretty fast as they know exactly where the prey is. Not getting any response from the soldier, Caine fired two rounds off, each down into the mans kneecaps, and then threw down the staircase for the infected to kill him. Quickly holstering his gun, he grabbed the assault rifle off the ground, and then looked at the girl in slight shock. Her skin seemed to be more pale then normal, she was obviously more scared then he could even imagine. Without even making time for chit chat, Caine pulled her inside of the bedroom, and then blocked the door tightly closed with an ivory dresser. Sitting the girl down on the bed, Caine has many questions, about who she was, and why those soldiers were hunting her down. But he knew she didnt understand why either just by seeing her face.
The horde of zombies in the stairwell had been ripping and feasting on the soldier very loudly, they were very occupied with the meal. But before long, there was already a number of them banging on the door to try and break in. It would only be a matter of time before Caine and the girl would have to get out of this place, otherwise they would be stuck in here for who knows how long. They needed to get out of here as soon as an option was available. It would also be wise for him to find a place for the girl to lay low for awhile. Just then, he had an idea. Maybe laying low was quite the opposite of what he had in mind. Looking at the girl, Caine spoke out in a low tone, motioning a 'halt' sign with his hand. "Stay here."
With that, he lay the gun and his bag down on the floor, and then opened up the window with both hands. The undead were piling up outside, but wouldnt bother then so long as they stayed quiet. Climbing up onto the windowsill, Caine then jumped and jumped himself up onto the roof. It was very, very high from the ground, and he could get a good view of the surrounding area of Raccoon City. The largest structure that would be the closest was the Raccoon City Times building. Sliding back down the roof, Caine grabbed onto the side, and then swung himself back into the room. It was a long stretch to survival, especially with all of the infected out there. They would need to move quickly to ensure that they stayed out of sight from the undead.
He had an idea, but they would have to be quick. Grabbing the bag from the ground, Caine fished around until he found a small can of lighter fluid. Then, he grabbed the assault rifle, and ejected the magazine into his hand, tossing the gun to the side. The gun had at least a dozen rounds left, which would be perfect. Walking over to the little girl, he quickly reached for the pillow that she was sitting on, and grabbed it from under her. Ripping off the fabric case, he then wrapped it around the 5.56 magazine, then poured the lighter fluid across one side of it. Now strapping on his bag to his back, Caine move for the window, and looked outside. There had been a good number of zombies in the ally below. Climbing back out to the windowsill, he looked back at the girl, he spoke out in a rushed, serious tone. "Come on, we have to go, ill help you down."
Reaching into his pocket, Caine pulled out a lighter, and then struck the flame. Waving it under the homemade explosive, it lit up, and then he tossed it as far onto the street as he could. He wasnt expecting it to explode, but when the magazine inside started to heat up, the bullets began to go off slowly, creating a noise distraction for zombies. In a few seconds, the lot of them had been completely interested in what was on the street, and it gave Caine and the girl enough time to escape. "Hurry, he dont have much time, hold onto me!" Caine spoke out, impatiently this time.

Serenity's whole body was shaking. It was unmistakable. What had been set in motion could not be undone. Her temporary salvation from danger had not prevented the fire, only slowed its coming. It was now only a matter of time. She panted quickly as her hands trembled in her lap, while Caine worked on something beside her. What it was, she didn't know. All she could concentrate on at the moment was the unbearable feeling welling up inside of her.
Finally, Caine approached her, speaking hurried impatient words. Serenity looked up at him slowly, her eyes wide and head trembling. She stood slowly and gripped his hand so tightly it must have cut off his circulation. Rushing her to the window, Serenity flinched as several loud bangs started to go off nearby. There was no time to worry about it though, as Caine quickly lowered her out the window into the alley.
The two moved quickly, Serenity clutching onto Caine, Caine leading her to some unknown destination. Serenity's mind was the most active it had ever been. One thought kept passing through her mind. When the fire comes this man will die. I don't want him to die. She clung to him tighter.
The two raced down the street and through an alley. They were moving quickly, too quickly. Serenity stumbled and fell. Not having time for concern, Caine quickly helped her up, only to be surprised when she violently pushed him away. Confused, he hurried up to her again, only to have Serenity push him and back away slowly.
Serenity's head was on fire. She put both hands to her head and double over. Her breathing was at least three times as fast as it should be. This was not good. Weary that something might be wrong, Caine kept his distance, but was slowly moving towards her. Suddenly she let out a sharp gasp and her body pulsated. Caine stopped moving towards her, and she stumbled a few more steps backwards. Shaking she clutched at her burning temples, mussing her hair into a chaotic state of disarray. Finally, the moment came. Serenity's body went stiff and her back arched as she let out an ear splitting scream. There was no delay, the nitrogen was not released this time, due to how long she had managed to contain it. The instant the phosphine gas hit the air, it reacted with the water vapor, creating a large fireball, a flash incineration. In an instant it was over and Serenity collapsed into a heap on the ground unconscious.

As the two of them moved down the ally, Caine had rushed through several of the infected that stumbled into their path. A few of them were easily to outrun, and just push aside, even with the little girl following him. The side street they were on now had been clear, thankfully, but the girl had fallen. Quickly, Caine assisted her back onto her feet, without any hesitation. Well, that didnt work out, as he was pushed away several time. Finally giving in, he backed up, and noticed that something was terribly wrong. The little girl seemed to be turning, she mustve gotten a scratch who knows how long ago, and it was starting to take effect. Pulling out his sidearm, Caine held it tightly, but didnt aim it at her. She was in much pain, and he wanted to help, but getting close to her now would turn ugly. Part of him knew that he should just bullet a bullet in her head now and get it over with, but another part of him wouldnt let him do that. She was just a child, regardless of the infected, he just couldnt do something like that. Then something unexpected happened, there was a large burst of light, seemed like a flashfire had ignited around the little girl. Somehow or another, she was still standing there, in pain. But her skin had been lifeless, yet she hadnt turned. Caine ran forward as she hit the ground, and checked her pulse. It was low, but she was still very much alive. Checking for a fever would be pointless, the flashfire would have her sweating like a shoe salesman. The only form of explaination that he could dish out was that she had gunpowder residue on her skin, and it somehow ignited. Whether there was a reason or not, Caine lifted the girl up over his shoulder, and carried her down the street towards the Raccoon City Times building. They had to get off the roads, too much activity just draws more and more attention. If the girl had felt a little hungry, she would have a tough time getting through the vest. But something told him that this was even more crazy then just the zombie plague.
