Daniel almost cursed when he heard Rio. Another night, dealing with this f**ker… Great. And now a goddamn worm to deal with, and Malcolm was offering their services. Daniel cleared his throat and stepped forward a bit.
“I don’t think Mr. Caleb here wants the kind of help we can offer.” He said. ‘I wouldn’t get this piece of s*** a bucket of water if he was on fire’ was what Daniel wanted to say, what he had to stop himself from saying. The worm wasn’t their problem, their problem was a train that was looking for them, who for all they knew could have found a way to cut through Malcolm’s jamming signals and were on their way here. A day was already pushing it, but that couldn’t be helped.
“Probably best if we just stick to ourselves.” He said, eyeing Caleb for a moment. “Just us.” He added for emphasis.

Malcom had taken a notepad off the bar and started scribbling down a few designs and a list with a pen he borrowed from Sheena. The first design he made up was a strange mix between a fence poster and an electric prod, the second a strange microwave oven looking box. He showed the list to the doctor, keeping it out of Caleb and Daniels vision.
"Just have someone follow these instructions to the letter, use these exact items and get back to me later, I'll show you how to use them. This one is a seismic monitor, that one is an electric lure."
He slipped back over to Daniels side, shrugging.
"Sorry man, old mercenary habits die hard. I figure we need all the payment and favours we could afford to gain right now." He leaned in whispering. "Plus one of those little gadgets will cool down the trail Art might be trying to follow."

Rio looked at Malcom and then back to Daniel. With Calab in the room it didn't feel quite right, and the way he kept looking at her just creeped her out even more. She lead the way up the stairs feeling Calab's eyes on her back the entire time. Once she hit the hallway she was running to the room. Inside she sat on the bed and pulled her knees up to her chest. She looked up at Daniel and Malcom as the walked into the room.
"I don't like being here. That guy creeps me out," she said as she tightened her grip on her knees. She could still feel the throbing pain in her face where he had hit her. She rubbed her jaw slightly and looked out the window. She sighed a bit and rested her head on he knees. "Sun will be down in about an hour. Something tells me that we wont be getting much sleep. I'm just wondering why those worms just move through the street and leave the buildings alone. Last time we took them on the thing had completly destroyed the wearhouse area."

“That’s a good question.” Daniel said, talking about the worms. He thought back to them, thought back to their problem. And to Malcolm. At first, he had been a bit annoyed, Malcolm offering help. Sure, Caleb was a total dick. Maybe even his brothers too, but the rest of the people here, they hadn’t done anything. They were probably as afraid of him as they were of the worm stalking the small town.
“All right… Seems like we have a day or so to kill before we can leave.” He said. “Who wants to kill a worm?” He asked. He didn’t wait for an answer, knew Malcolm would be up for it, for the points he had given a few minutes ago.
“All right. Out in the car, we have ten pounds of C4 and a few grenades. We also have a lot of random junk. What we need is something that vibrates, something to get its attention, to make it bite. And then, boom.” He said. “Simple enough, no one has to get hurt. And we can have Caleb go and run the bait out into an open area.” He said. “Any objections?”

"Way ahead of you dog." Malcom slapped Daniel on the back. "I've asked that doc to pass around a list of parts we don't have on hand to work up something I think will help."
He showed off the diagrams he's scribbled together, making sure Rio had a good view since she was the main technical member of the team.
"First off, a seismograph, kinda rough but it should give a good reading of the area and let us either track the worm, or at least know when it's coming. And second, this baby I call the thumper, drives a large electrically charged post into the ground at random intervals, the vibrations and the charge act as a lure, learned that off a fisherman, he used to jam a fork into the ground hooked up to a car battery to scare up bait, worms pop up like crazy, same principle just on a bigger scale. and as a bonus I'll be using parts from the tracker for both, should mess up Art searching for us a little more, make up for lost time."
He let the info sink in for a bit.
"Of course I could 'mess up' building the lure and let Caleb go out with a faulty model to plant.....I didn't say that and you didn't hear it though."

Rio laughed slightly feeling a bit better at what Malcom and Daniel were saying. "Lets not do that. We're better than that. I'll be fine for the night as long as I stay away from that man," she said as she turned to look out the window. "Tell me something," she said turning to look at them. "I know we really haven't seen any of the towns people, but is it me or are there quite a few more men and children than women here?" she asked feeling a bit odd about it. "When I look at the buildings and other people in them I'm hardly seeing any females," she pointed out.
As if to answer her question the building began to shake violently. Rio moved to the window as she watched the ground shifting again as the worm made it's way up through the streets. Then she seen something that she didn't expect. Shella walking out of the inn, and straight to the middle of the street where she stood still. "Malcom Daniel," Rio shouted turning to them. "She's going to get herself killed if we don't do something."

Daniel smiled when he heard what Malcolm’s plans were, let out a laugh when he heard him talk about Caleb being bait. One more move from Caleb, that was going to be the case. He took a peek out the window when he heard Rio yell about Shella, and he sighed. This place got weirder and weirder by the second.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the pistol, setting it on the bed near Rio as he went to the door. She knew how to use it, and he wasn’t sure if Malcolm was coming. He didn’t look back as he ran down the stairs, jumping to the bottom when he got five or six from the end. He ran out, hitting the swinging doors of the makeshift hotel when he felt the ground start to shake.
Running full bore into the dirt street, he grabbed hold of Shella and shoved her. She made it to the solid ground next to the building, and Daniel took off the opposite way. He heard the ground break open as the worm came to look for its food, and followed after Daniel’s footsteps. He kept running, back to the hotel, and stopped when he was inside. He looked back, reaching for the dagger on his belt, his only weapon, his personal knife that he’d taken from the armory locker where he found Malcolm’s sword. It was a shame the AFDS had taken their guns, only took the blades back to the armory to be picked up.
He stopped and looked at the five inch knife in his hand, silently hoping the worm didn’t get it in its head to come inside the hotel.

"Well, guess we have to play hero again. Lock the door behind us Rio. Or behind Daniel at least."
Malcom climbed out onto the window ledge.
"Not too far up, I'm taking the express elevator."
He jumped off, crouching as he hit the ground and drew his sword, following behind the worm as it chased Daniel and Sheena. As it partly surfaced he stabbed down into the soft looking parts on it's back, slowing it down slightly as it had to move whilst the blade caught on the ground it was digging through. Malcom dropped back and drew his knives, waiting to see it's next move as Daniel took Sheena back into cover. The sword still stuck out the top as it moved around, somewhat resembling a periscope. He rushed back to the hummer and quickly jimmied open the door before diving in and starting it up.
"Okay, give us a good look, we'll see what kind of roadkill you make."

Rio watched as Daniel and Malcom made there way out to rescue Shella form her rather stupid move. She moved to lock the door like she was told to, but instead the door swung open knocking her to the ground. She looked up shocked as Calabe entered the room. Rio went for the gun, but he was quicker on his feet. He slapped her across the face, and then grabbed her shirt pulling her to her feet and then slammed her into the wall. "Time we play a little game," he said with a sly smile. "Here let me take that," he said pulling the gun from her hand and tossing it on the bed.
He slammed her head up against the wall one more time before dragging her out of the room. "Time for the back door," he mumbled to himself before he left down the back stairs that lead into the kitchen, and from there he headed down the back alley to what locked like a run down building. He shipped in through the back door and headed down the stairs. Walking to what looked like a broke book shelf he pushed it out of the way revealing a hidden room. Inside the room were jars with colored liquid and various forms and sizes of what looked to be the over grown worm outside. Then in one large tank was a larger live worm, or rather a baby kept in captivity. Calab walked to the corner pulling out a chain and strapping it around Rio's neck. After which he left the room and shut the door. Returning to the surface he headed to the doctors office to check on his brother.

Daniel had seen Caleb take Rio out of the room, wanting to stop it then and there, but waited. What was Caleb up to? Was he just a scumbag, taking Rio off to hide her away from them so he could have his way? Or was he a whole new level of jerk off, one that shouldn’t be found in a little place like this? As he followed the pair, it was looking more like the first. He peeked in through the boards over the broken out windows, watched Caleb move the bookshelf and disappear with Rio. Daniel looked for a way in when he heard the slide of the bookshelf again. Either he had impotence issues, or it wasn’t what it looked like. Daniel scrambled out of view when he saw Caleb coming out, hiding until the man was gone, and Daniel went around to the back door.
He moved the bookcase aside and descended the stairs, finding Rio chained up and all of the worms that were around the room.
“What… The f**k?” He said, looking at the shelves that lined the walls for a moment before he went to Rio. He pulled out his dagger and began using it to try and jimmy the lock open, sliding it into the hole where the open ended U slid into the hole.
“What the hell is this guy’s issue?” He asked Rio. Maybe she knew something he didn’t. Crazy f**ks tended to ramble on when they thought they’d won, in his experience.

During the ruckus indoors, Malcom had taken to watching the worm move around from the safety of the hummvee, waiting for a good shot. As soon as it surfaced and started rolling around trying to 'feel' something worth eating, he floored the accelorator and ran the left two wheels over its midsection.
"Whoops." He checked the rearview mirror. "Kinda half a miss, let me try that again."
He threw the vehicle into reverse, crushing the approxamite head this time, then heading forwards again, then in reverse. This continued on for a few minutes whilst the worm made pitiful noises and a few of the townspeople looked out to see what was going on. Eventually he parked on top of it and spun the tires for thirty seconds, making extra sure it wasn't going to move again. Stepping out he checked the carcas for his swords, cleaning it off and resheathing it before grabbing two M16s from the boot and heading back into the bar to meet up with Daniel and Rio. After this little event he thought it wise if they kept more guns closeby and the rest locked up in the hummvee.
"You." He nudged the barrel of one of the rifles towards Shella when he saw her. "What the hell were you doing out there? Trying to get yourself killed?"

Shella raised her hands in the air as she cried. "I- I . . ."
"Hey leave her alone," one of the men growled as he raised his own weapon. "We all have a part to play in this, and some of us wish to sacrifice ourselves to buy more time for the rest of us. That's not the only worm out there. You just ****ed off the rest," he barked.
"Leo put the gun down," Doc spoke up as he walked into the room. "These people where only trying to help, and with us keeping a bit of a secret with these creatures. It's kind of hard for them to know what and not what to do." He waited for Leo to put the gun down. "Shella are you okay?" She nodded and he smiled. "Good girl. Why don't you and Joye fix up everyone something to eat. We'll wait for night fall, and hope for the best." He turned to Malcom and nodded. "People choose to sacrifice there lives in order to save the majority. I do not approve of it, but I do not see any other way. These people do not want to leave there home. An at night we can stay in and let those things roam freely, but during the day that is usually our time. Though every once in a while they come out during the day. That's when it's dangerous," he explained. "But that's only on a rare case."
-----------------------------------------------------------
Rio pulled her hair out of the way so that Daniel could try and get the chain off her neck. She looked around the room the best that she could. "It looks like a porly created hatchery," she said as she sat up when the chain hit the ground. Rubbing her neck she sat straight up. "Damn he didn't have to hit me so hard," she mumbled as she rubbed her forehead. With Daniel's help she stood up. Her legs felt like jellow and her body felt a bit off. "HIt my head to hard," she mumbled as she rubbed her neck. Walking over to the tank she looked down at the small worm that rested in the sand.
"This is a baby, there are three more in here," she said pointing at the other three humps in the sand. She turned to look at Daniel and then froze at the site that stood behind him. Jeffery held a shotgun at waist high. "What are you doing?" she growled.
"Stopping you two from causing a lot of problems." He motioned his weapon toward Rio. "Come here girl," he growled. As Rio refused to move he cocked the weapon. "I said come here. Remember this. One shot will take you both out. This small room there is no where for you two run."
Rio looked at Daniel and then back to Jeffery. She sighed a bit as she did what she was told to do. Moving slowly toward him. When she was right at him he grabbed her by the neck and pulled her into him. Rio grimiced slightly as he tightened his grip on her neck.
"Now you throw all your weapons in the corner, slowly. One wrong move and I break her neck. Now do it," he ordered.

“Ok, ok.” Daniel said, his voice soft. Trying to give Jeff the illusion that he was in control. As soon as he got his opening, he was going to kill this guy. Daniel looked at the dagger still in his hand, and tossed it over into the corner. He held his hands out at the side, not putting them up. You never put your hands up until you were ordered to. When you did, they were expecting the movement. It gave you the opportunity to strike. Daniel took a step foreword, waiting for the man to make his next move. He looked at Rio, and she knew the look. She knew he was analyzing every moment, every move, everything, looking for a way to come out on top. Like he had done many times over in the past. This guy wasn’t anything special.

"Take the advice Leo" Malcom pointed his rifle at the gunman when the doc tried to calm him down. "Drop the gun or we'll have to patch up the wall behind your head."
He listened to the doctor for a second, watching around the room ready to go full auto with both rifles if need be. A dangerous use of weaponry but effective when any attackers had no good cover nearby, most of the furniture looked like it wouldn't stop a wet paper assault.
"Oh, complete willing sacrifice? All consensual and she'll be fine to go off and make dinner?" Malcom started grilling the doctor. "Well then you won't mind telling me why you haven't gotten these people out of town, or made an effort to call for help or kill these things. Plus the million dollar question, I've only seen two women so far and no children, unless you've somehow mastered mitosis, how the hell is this town sustaining itself?"
He motioned with his guns again.
"And please, no bull hockey, I'm declaring this a bull-free zone."

The Doctor mostioned for Malcom to sit at the table as he did. "Truth be told. We tried to get people to leave. This place is people's homes. There not going to leave it. Like bad hurricans in Flordia. People refuse to leave even with manditory evacuations. The men you see here send there wives and children away, and stay in order to try and save their home. I guess they hope that in the end they would all be able to return at one point." He shook his head as he looked up at Shella as she returned.
She sat down a plate of sandwhiches and drinks. Looking to Malcom she smiled weakly. "I do appologize for what I done, but those who sacrifice there lives to the worms are those who have no one left in there lives. Phillip wanted to do it, but I took his place. He has more to offer to this town than I do," she explained. She looked out to the dusty street and sighed. "That road use to be paved, but when the worms came it turned to dust." She looked back to Malcom and smiled. "Thank you for being brave."
----------------------------
Jeffery smiled as he looked at Daniel. "I'm not stupid," he said as he backed out the door with Rio in his arms. "My brother and I will be back for you," he said as he slammed the door shut. He threw Rio to the floor and turned back to the door. Reaching over he grabbed a large thick plank and put it over the door so it wouldn't open. He turned back to Rio as she brought a plank down over his head. He stumbled into the door and turned to Rio as she tried to hit him again. He grabbed the plank and jerked it from her hands. "Now now. This isn't going to be so bad."
Rio growled as she tried to take off for the door, but was quickly tackled to the ground. "Get off!" she screamed as she tried to wiggle out of his grasp. "Please get off," she cried.
"Shut up," he barked as he tried to cover her mouth. She bit his hand causing him to curse, and in return he slammed her head onto the ground knocking her out again. He reached down picking her up and dragging her to the upstairs room where the side of the wall was missing, and it over looked the streets. He dropped Rio on the ground where he then tied her up. After he cliped a hook on the ropes that were tied to her hand. He pulled back on another rope lifting her up off the ground.
Looking at his watch, and then out to the setting sun. He hit a switch, and then hand made crain extended out beyond the room and over the street leaving Rio dangling over the street as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon.
